Effects of Ovariectomy and 17β-Estradiol Replacement on Dopamine D2 Receptors in Female Rats: Consequences on Sucrose, Alcohol, Water Intakes and Body Weight  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: Mechanisms underlying overeating-induced obesity in post-menopausal woman include functional lack of 17β-estradiol dysregulating dopamine D2 receptors, thereby inducing food addiction, glucose craving or alcohol dependence through reward circuitry. This study aimed at further understanding 17β-estradiol and dopamine D2 receptors interferences in the etiology of woman obesity. Method: Seventy-two Wistar female rats weighing 200 - 205 g, individually-housed, were divided into non-ovariectomized control (C = 6 groups) and ovariectomized rats (OVX = 6 groups) which were concurrently subjected to the following treatments: Non-drug-treated (DMSO vehicle), 17β-estradiol (E2, 5 μg/kg, s.c.), sulpiride (SUL, 20 mg/kg, i.p.), bromocriptine (BR, 0.1 mg/kg, i.p.), E2 + SUL or E2 + BR, designating the 6 constitutive groups of either control or ovariectomy. Within each experimental group, consumption of different solutions (10% alcohol, 10% sucrose and water) as well as food intake and body weight were daily measured, for 10 consecutive days. Results: This study indicated that D2S was a specific inducer of alcohol and food intakes, but reduced sugar consumption. In addition, 17β- estradiol regulated the body weight set point, modulating D2S functions towards increased food intake at lower weights and decreased food intake at higher weights. D2S met the slow genomic actions induced by 17β-estradiol. Conversely, D2L inhibited alcohol and food intakes, but induced specifically sugar consumption, thereby regulating blood glucose levels and promoting energy expenditure in reducing body weight. Indeed, 17β-estradiol exerted a tonic inhibition on D2L which was released by OVX, exacerbating sugar intake and increasing body weight. D2L mediated the rapid metabolic effects of 17β-estradiol. Conclusion: Our results supported physiological data reporting that activation of the mostly expressed presynaptically D2S-class autoreceptors decreased dopamine release stimulating food intake, whereas activation of the predominantly postsynaptic isoform D2L receptors increased dopamine activity inhibiting food intake. Our studies indicated that 17β-estradiol acted on the two types of D2 receptors showing opposite functions to equilibrate energy intake vs. expenditure for weight set point regulation. Our data also supported biochemical findings reporting that 17β-estradiol induced D2 genes transcriptional regulation, thereby involving both types of D2 receptors
Global existence of radial solutions for general semilinear hyperbolic systems in 3D

Abstract: We study the well-posedness of radial solutions for general nonlinear hyperbolic systems in three dimensions. We give a proof of the global existence of radial solutions for general semilinear hyperbolic systems in 3D under null condition, with small scaling invariant $\dot{W}^{2,1}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ data. We obtain a bilinear estimate that is effective to the hyperbolic systems which do not have any time decay. It allows us to achieve the boundedness of the weighted BV norm of the radial solution.
Forecasting of Niger Grain Production and Harvested Area

Abstract: Niger agriculture is predominantly rain-fed and remains the main source of income for large population. Despite its importance in Niger economy, agriculture sector is still traditional and largely affected by severe weather conditions. High population growth which experienced Niger continues to increase pressure on limited land resulting in extension of crop production on marginal land unfavorable for agriculture. The fact that Niger agriculture is rain-fed is behind the country vulnerability to food insecurity. The main purpose of this study is to forecast Niger grain production and harvested Areas and for the two main staple crops (Millet and Sorghum) using ARIMA model. The time series data of production and harvested area covering the period 1970-2010 were used in the study. The findings showed that the total harvested Area and total grain production would be 21317.4 thousand of ha and 12677.9 thousand tons in 2030, respectively. The model also showed that Millet and Sorghum production would be 4503 thousand tons and 1574.8 tons, respectively at the same period. The results of study are expected to help Niger authorities to build strong strategy in reducing population’s vulnerability to food insecurity and make policies with regard to relative price structure, production and consumption.
Geodesic diameter of sets defined by few quadratic equations and inequalities

Abstract: We prove a bound for the geodesic diameter of a subset of the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$ described by a fixed number of quadratic equations and inequalities, which is polynomial in $n$, whereas the known bound for general degree is exponential in $n$. Our proof uses methods borrowed from D'Acunto and Kurdyka (to deal with the geodesic diameter) and from Barvinok (to take advantage of the quadratic nature).

Abstract: The vertical electrical soundings on the Matam region phosphates deposits are interpreted by inversion. To retrieve lithology from the obtained resistivities, mechanical drilling was performed to compare directly the lithologies and the geoelectrical resistivities. The obtained relation is not simple and is not sufficient to interpret all the VES. This situation motivated the collection of supplementary information from cyclostratigraphy. Geoelectrical and cyclostratigraphic information is combined using fuzzy logic techniques to build a fuzzy inference system. The obtained results seem to be consistent with the stratigraphy of the investigated region and allow retrieving lithological succession. Further investigations are necessary for more accurate thickness determination.

Abstract: The content of chemical compounds of two leguminous plants (Alysicarpus ovalifolius and Indigofera pilosa) was given through chromatographic methods (HPLC) and spectrocolorimetry. The principal isolated compounds are: β-Carotene in the sheets, the vitamin B in the roots and the vitamin C in the pods. Trace elements are not also insulated in the two plant species. The results show a content iodine (0.27 mg/100g of sample) particularly high in the stems of Indigofera pilosa, what could explain the use of the plant to fight against the thyroid dysfunctions. The ratio iron in mg/100g of sample 114.14 is rather important and would make Indigofera pilosa a palliative against anaemia. The two plants would be indicated in cases of treatment of hypocalcaemia.

Abstract: In recent years worldwide boundaries have been redefined, thanks to internet and technologies which facilitate increasingly the interaction between virtual friends and socials networking users. Consumers as well as producers in both developed and developing countries share information, pictures and videos via the Web 2.0 tools available on electronic devices and Internet websites. However due to several obstacles, activities such as co-creations, digital collaboration and others socials networking can be limited for some users. Thus this article discussed various factors that limit developing countries’ prosumers interactivity in the age of Web 2.0 technology. The factors influencing numbers of users’ collaboration can be individual, organizational, technological and/ or environmental factors.

Abstract: In African cities, today’s patterns of consumption are increasingly generating solid and liquid waste. This waste requires adequate management as it poses significant risks to public health and the environment. To meet the challenge in Ouagadougou, a waste treatment and recycling center has been implemented. The leachates from household refuse evacuated in this center are treated by two series settling ponds whose performances have been evaluated throughout the present study. For this purpose, samples were taken from the basins and analyzed weekly for two months. On these samples, the physical parameters (pH, temperature, conductivity), organic pollution indicators (BOD5, COD, SS), nitrogen pollution (nitrate, nitrite) and phosphorus pollution (ortho-phosphates) were evaluated according to AFNOR standards. The average of suspended-matter contents above 13,000 mg/L and this particulate pollution abatement recorded is 2.04%, whereas the Chemical Oxygen Demand reached respective maximum values of 660 and 480 mg/L for both basins. Nutrients such as nitrates were well eliminated whereas orthophosphates are released. PH values varied between 8.62 and 9.51, while electrical conductivity values varied between 482 and 625 μS/cm. The Fecal Coliforms reached maximum concentrations of 10,000 and 12,800 UFC/100mL.

Abstract: We report a case of elbow neglected dislocation with preservation of function in a 35-year-old patient. The clinical examination, ten years after the trauma, objectified a posterior dislocation of the elbow with a functional stiffness. Therapeutic abstention was decided in front of moderate functional discomfort. The high frequency of these neglected dislocations in our areas is due to the first-line appeal of patients to the bonesetters. The treatment is surgical for non-functional elbows with a risk of residual stiffness. Therapeutic abstention is recommended for functional elbows.
Dry Ports in China and West Africa: A Comparative Study  [PDF]

The dry port concept was first adopted in Europe and North America, followed by Asia, South America and then Africa. Since then, the development of inland cargo distribution facilities has been an active approach to support the hinterlands of maritime gateways among other functions. Dry ports can be developed in the hinterland based on different approaches, involving differing functions, actors, motivations and logistical models. They can be classified as close, mid-range or distant, with respect to the seaport. Dry port development can be carried out by port authorities, port terminal operators and transport providers such as third-party logistics providers or rail operators or by public bodies: local, national or regional. One of the design strategies for these facilities is rail-based which promotes economies of scale on high capacities and long distance links. The other strategy is the road-based short-distance satellite terminals aimed at decongesting the port or facilitating faster custom clearances. This paper carries out a comparative analysis of dry ports in China and the West African countries using a descriptive approach and providing case studies for each parameter used in the comparative study. This study is based on motivations for dry port development in these regions, as well as the development and management models applied in the dry port sector. In addition, a discussion on the merits and demerits of the management and development models applied on dry ports in these regions are also included in this study, from which conclusions and recommendations are drawn to support policy formulation and future studies. This paper not only serves to contribute to the existing academic knowledge on dry ports, but also provides the policy makers and practitioners in the logistics and trade sectors with an invaluable opportunity to compare the practices in the two regions for application to appropriate scenarios.
