Piptadenia stipulacea (Benth.) Ducke Seed Germination in Response to Temperature, Light and Water Stress  [PDF]

Abstract: The current study aimed to investigate the effects of the temperature, light, and water stress on Piptadenia stipulacea seed germination. It assessed germination percentage, speed and average germination time, root and stem length as well as the dry weight of seedlings subjected to the constant temperatures of 20°C, 25°C and 30°C and alternating temperatures from 20°C to 30°C. A 12-hour photoperiod was established in addition to the following light conditions: white, darkness, red and far red. The experimental design was completely randomized and four replicates of 25 seeds were performed for each treatment. Regarding water stress, seeds were subjected to osmotic potentials of 0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6, -0.8, -1.0, and -1.2 MPa, at 30°C and 12 h light/12 h darkness photoperiods. After they were mixed, 100 seeds were randomly selected for biometric measurement and they were found to be uneven with respect to size and weight. P. stipulacea seeds germinated under all tested temperature and light conditions. Germination under water stress occurred up to -0.8 MPa. The conclusion is that there was no germination from -1.0 MPa. The seeds are light-indifferent and germinate at the constant temperatures of 20°C, 25°C and 30°C and alternating temperatures from 20°C to 30°C.
Bacterial translocation in rats nonfunctioning diverted distal colon

Abstract: purpose: to investigate whether the alterations of the diverted colon segment mucosa, evidenced in fecal colitis, would be able to alter bacterial translocation (bt). methods: sixty-two wistar male rats ranging from 220 to 320 grams of weight, were divided in two groups: a (colostomy) and b (control), with 31 animals each one. in group a, all animals underwent end colostomy, one stoma, in ascending colon; and in the 70th pod was injected in five rats, by rectal route diverted segment - 2ml of a 0.9% saline solution in animals (a1 subgroup); in eight it was inoculated, by rectal route, 2ml of a solution containing escherichia coli atcc 25922 (american type culture collection), in a concentration of 108 colony forming unit for milliliters (cfu/ml) - a2 subgroup; in ten animals the same solution of e. coli was inoculated, in a concentration of 1011 cfu/ml (a3 subgroup); and in eight it was collected part of the mucus found in the diverted distal colonic segment for neutral sugars and total proteins dosage (a4 subgroup). the animals from the group b underwent the same procedures of group a, but with differences in the colostomy confection. in rats from subgroups a1, a2, a3, b1, b2, and b3 2ml of blood were aspirated from the heart, and fragments from mesenteric lymphatic nodule, liver, spleen, lung and kidney taken for microbiological analysis, after their death. this analysis consisted of evidencing the presence of e. coli atcc 25922 cfu. mann-whitney and anova tests were applied as analytic techniques for association of variables. results: the occurrence of bt was evidenced only in those animals in which inoculated concentration of e. coli atcc 25922, reached levels of 1011cfu/ml, i.e. in subgroups a3 and b3, although, being significantly greater (80%) in those animals without colostomy (subgroup b3) when compared to the ones with colostomy (20%) from the subgroup a3 (p <0.05). lung, liver and mesenteric lymphatic nodules were the tissues with larger percentile of bac

Abstract: this article presents reflections on the environmental question in relation to global warming, considering it to be the most current manifestation of the issue and that with the strongest impact. it situates both the social and environmental questions at the root of a system that through its mode of production, by commodifying man and earth, produces inequality, poverty and depredation. the paper conducts critical readings of the system to reveal its inherent contradictions, based on the fact that it appropriates, for private purposes, goods produced by man and nature. it stimulates understanding and awareness of these issues to establish resistances and thus inscribe in the political agenda a situation more favorable to life on the planet.

Abstract: Resumo: Neste artigo trato da quest o social que resulta da contradi o das rela es do Capital e Trabalho, inscrita no sistema que se afirmou com a revolu o industrial e hoje tem novas manifesta es na reestrutura o produtiva. A quest o social, basicamente composta dos elementos econ mico e político, que se manifesta no pauperismo. Aquele que o percebe toma consciência e o denuncia, exigindo outro atendimento, ou seja, é o elemento da resistência, capaz de inscrever o problema da pobreza na agenda política. Entendo que na quest o social, hoje, este elemento da resistência é um ser em constru o. Para chegar a isso, situamos o que se convencionou chamar de “quest o social clássica”, da metade do século XIX e se manifestou a partir da pauperiza o resultante da revolu o industrial, ou seja, é a pobreza considerada como “filha da industrializa o”. Quanto ao elemento político este se expressou na organiza o e forma o da classe operária, seus sindicatos, os partidos políticos de esquerda, assumindo o protagonismo da quest o social.Situar a quest o social, hoje, é detectar as contradi es que se manifestam a partir da reestrutura o da produ o, desde o final do último século e início deste, afirmado na vers o da “mundializa o financeira”. Flexibiliza e precariza as rela es de trabalho o que causa um desemprego estrutural, porque os “desfiliados” do trabalho vulnerabilizam até mesmo os “estáveis”. Na quest o social hoje há, portanto, novas manifesta es da pobreza, a partir da reestrutura o produtiva, mas os atores e sujeitos para denunciar esta situa o e definir um projeto mais favorável, constituem um elemento ainda em constru o. Abstract: In this article I take the social question as a result of the fight between Capital and Work, present today in the system affirmed as the industrial revolution and nowadays known as the productive reorganization. The social question, basically composed of the economic and political elements, now may by manifested as pauperism. That one that perceives it taking consciousness and denouncing it, demanding another attendance, becomes the element of resistance, capable to inscribe this problem in the political agenda.I understand that in the social question today this element of the resistance is in construction. To arrive to this we point out what in the past was called “the classic social question” (XIX th. Century), from the resultant pauperism of the industrial revolution. Abstract: the purpose of the study was to assess whether there is a relation between shoulder functional capacity and occupational activity among traffic workers exposed to repetitive movements and/or to overexertion; and to inquire on shoulder complaints and symptoms of cumulative trauma disorders. a hundred and two traffic workers were divided into two groups - g1 exposed to overuse and overexertion, g2 exposed only to overuse - and submitted to the constant-murley functional shoulder protocol, which assesses four items: pain, pain in activities of daily living, range of motion, and muscle strength. data were statistically analysed and significance level set at p<0.05. shoulder pain was reported by 66% of g1 subjects and by 28.8% of g2's; g1 presented higher pain intensity complaints on the right shoulder (11.80±4.60) than g2 (13.56±3.33; p=0.030); and a trend was found to more intense pain on the left shoulder in g1 than in g2 (p=0.054). workers of both groups did not present functional decrease as compared to normality parameters. there was hence no association between functional shoulder capacity and occupational activity in neither group, which may be due to the bias known as healthy worker effect. g1 shoulder pain complaints were linked to repetitive movements associated to physical effort inherent to g1 worker tasks.

A study was conducted to examine the effects of different temperatures and water stress on Encholirium spectabile seeds. We evaluated the germination percentage, speed and time of germination of small (<2.97 mm), medium (2.97 ≤ M ≤ 4.01 mm) and large seeds (>4.01 mm), at temperatures of 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 30°C, 35°C, 40°C and 45°C and a photoperiod of 12 hours of light. Seeds were subjected to osmotic potentials of 0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6, -0.8, -1.0, -1.2 and -1.4 MPa, induced by solutions of polyethylene glycol.
