Carvalho-Filho, Pauzanes de;Arruda, Orlando Martins;Melo-Souza, Sebastio Eurico de;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1989, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1989000100014
Abstract: a case of a girl (10 years old) with a psycho-organic syndrome plus headache without signs of clear intracranial hypertension is related. the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis was made by csf abnormalities. pleds over the left cerebral hemisphere were recorded at the first day after treatment with praziquantel (50mg/kg/day during 21 days). the first ct scan was normal and just after the treatment showed a prominent left cerebral hemisphere involvement, despite parenchymatous dissemination of cysticerci was bilateral. the treatment was successful and the patient became asymptomatic in the two years follow-up. the neurophysiologic aspects of this eeg abnormality is also discussed.
Polineuropatia periférica induzida por benzonidazol no tratamento da doen?a de Chagas
Defaria, Carlos Roberto;Melo-Souza, Sebastio Eurico de;Rassi, Anis;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1986, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1986000200003
Abstract: neurophysiological examination before and after the administration of benzonidazol, has shown peripheral polineuropathy induced by this drug in most of the patients treated for chronic chagas' disease. the polineuropathy was mostly axonal and it was dose dependent being more severe in patients who had desnervation of skeletal muscles before receiving the drug.
Lobectomia temporal no infarto cerebral com efeito de massa
Martins, Luis Fernando;Costa, Valter da;Costa, Joaquim da;Melo-Souza, Sebastio Eurico de;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1993, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1993000100019
Abstract: cerebral edema secondary to ischemia can threaten life, mainly due to frequent failure of medical management. imminent herniation of the temporal lobe can be timely detected by clinical signs and ct-scan. eight patients (4m, 4f; 48-74 years, mean 62) with ischemic stroke and imminent herniation, were surgically decompressed by a standard temporal lobectomy as described by olivier for temporal lobe epilepsy. six patients survived, two died and were considered failure of the procedure, probably due to late surgical indication. in conclusion, temporal lobectomy is life-saving for patients with large ischemic cerebral infarction with mass effect land deteriorating signs of brain stem compression.

Damasceno, Benito Pereira;Campos Jr., Sizenando da Silva;Martins, Luiz Fernando;Melo-Souza, Sebastio Eurico de;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1988, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1988000400002
Abstract: the authors analysed 34 cases of resistant epilepsy (20 males and 14 females, mean age 23 years), treated clinically between february/1984 and may/1986. the patients underwent neurological, neuropsychological, psychological, psychiatric, cerebrospinal fluid, electroencephalographic, tomographic and/or angiographic examination. most of the patients had complex partial seizures. the etiology was unknown in 19 patients (55.8%), probable neurocysticercosis in 6, perinatal hypoxia in 5, delivery trauma in 3 and probable sequelae of encephalitis in 2 patients. there was a clear past history of infantile febrile convulsion in 2 patients. most patients received carbamazepine (mean dose 24.5 mg/kg/day), phenytoin (5 mg/kg and valproic acid (28 mg/kg) as monotherapy or in association. twenty-two patients (64.7%) had more than 80% decrease of the seizure frequency. nine resistant epilepsy-cases (24.5%) were evaluated as candidates for surgical therapy. the authors concluded that the resistant epilepsy is best managed by a specialised, multidisciplinary team, and pointed out the need of a correct diagnosis of the seizure type, an adequate drug therapy and a good engagement of the patient and his family in the treatment.

Abstract: the central pontine myelinosis is classically related with rapid correction of chronic hyponatremia. recently, important aditional factors have been described in the pathogenesis of this condition. we report the case of a 43-year-old alcoholic malnourished man, with acute renal failure with dialytic treatment, and output failure shoshin beriberi. he had tetraplegy and coma. confirmation of pontine and extrapontine myelinosis by magnetic resonance imaging, and abnormalities on auditive evoked potentials are described.
Síndrome de Sneddon relato de três casos
Zaccariotti, Vladimir Arruda;Martins, Luiz Fernando;Costa, Valter da;Silva, Nilzio A. da;Casas, Alberto A. Las;Melo-Souza, Sebastio Eurico de;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1995000100013
Abstract: the sneddon's syndrome consists of neurologic manifestations associated to the presence of livedo reticularis and cyanosis of the extremities. the pathological process is an endothelial obliteration of arterioles, leading to a reticular appearance of the skin, despite the environment temperature. the authors present three new cases, causasian males with 7, 16 and 54 years of age. the youngest started with hemilateralized motor seizures and showed a porencefalic area in the ct scan. the oldest had livedo reticularis, acrocyanosis and started with hemilateralized motor seizures, and a hemiparesis as sequela; ct scan with parasagittal infarct and occlusion presented of one anterior cerebral artery on angiography. the third patient started with hemifacial seizures, developed a labioglossolaringeal paresis and dysarthria as sequela; ct scan and mri showed multiple infarcts, with multiple occlusions of cortical branchs on angiography. the skin biopsies showed endothelial vascular hyperplasia in all cases. only one (54 years old) patient had a positive igg antiphospholipid antibodies. the sneddon's syndrome seems not to be so rare and have to be considered in the etiological investigation of cerebral infarcts, mainly in young people.
Arthur Neiva e a 'quest?o nacional' nos anos 1910 e 1920
Souza, Vanderlei Sebastio de;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702009000500012
Abstract: the article analyzes the interpretations and diagnoses of brazil developed by scientist and writer arthur neiva in the 1910s and 1920s, focusing especially on his literary cr?nicas and his report on the 1912 scientific expedition to the interior of brazil. i highlight the author's criticisms of the mentality of the governing elite and men of letters, especially their failure to take political initiative, their penchant for imitating ideas, and their exaggerated use of pretentious rhetoric, which neiva believed to be the main culprits behind brazil's cultural and political backwardness. i also analyze how neiva addressed the race issue and the dilemma of nation building, which in the early twentieth century was considered a theme of prime importance in understanding brazil's reality and destiny within the so-called concert of nations.

In search of Brazil: Edgard Roquette-Pinto and the Brazilian anthropological portrait (1905-1935)
Vanderlei Sebastio de Souza
Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ciências Humanas , 2012,
Abstract: The thesis deals with the history of physical anthropology and the debates on race and nation at the beginning of the twentieth century, focusing on the anthropological studies carried out by the physician and anthropologist Edgard Roquette-Pinto. As a scientist linked to the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro between 1905 and 1935, he was dedicated to research on anthropology and ethnography of Brazil, through which he sought not only to describe the formative racial characteristics of the country, but also to evaluate the biological feasibility, psychological character and social conditions of the population. By linking Roquette-Pinto's nationalist activism, his public actions and his dialogue with the anthropological thought of the time, the thesis analyzes the relations between anthropology, nation and politics, highlighting the national and international frontiers involved in the debate. Roquette-Pinto's anthropology was based both on a national context and Brazilian intellectual and scientific concerns, and the international debate on race and populations. On the one hand, the thesis analyzes the dialogue and the controversies between the anthropologist and Brazilian writers, such as Euclides da Cunha, Manoel Bomfim, Oliveira Vianna, Renato Kehl and Gilberto Freyre, seeking to understand how controversies about racial miscegenation, immigration and the settlement of Brazil were central to the construction of interpretations, diagnostics and projects of national reform. On the other hand, the work shows how his anthropological writing was constructed in dialogue with physical anthropologists, historians and foreign eugenists, mostly German and American, including Charles Davenport, Madison Grant, Eugen Fischer, Rüdiger Bilden and Franz Boas. One of the arguments defended here is that the anthropology of Roquette-Pinto becomes more intelligible when analyzing the international debate involving anthropological studies and intellectual networks. The thesis is a contribution both for the history of anthropology in Brazil and for the history of the circulation of ideas about race, national identity and population in an international context.
The portrait of a nation: Edgard Roquette-Pinto's study on the Brazilian 'anthropological types', 1910-1920
Vanderlei Sebastio de Souza
Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ciências Humanas , 2012,
Abstract: The article analyses the studies carried out by the anthropologist Edgard Roquette-Pinto (1884-1954) on the classification of 'anthropological types' of Brazil. Affiliated to the Museu Nacional, in Rio de Janeiro, the anthropologist collected data on the anatomical, physiological and psychological characteristics of the Brazilian population in the early decades of the 20th century. The racial classification put forward by Roquette-Pinto resulted not only from the ongoing national intellectual context, but also resulted from technical and theoretical influences from abroad, in particular from Germany and the United States. The anthropologist's goal was to produce an 'anthropological portrait' of Brazil. His research aimed at revealing the racial characteristics involved in the formation of the nation, as well as evaluating the biological viability of the population, especially the 'mixed race types'.
