Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate four isolates of the antagonist fungus dicyma pulvinata in terms of its compatibility with chemical pesticides and adjuvants products, and the efficiency of these isolates as biocontrol agent against south american leaf blight (microcyclus ulei) of rubber tree (hevea sp.) under field conditions. isolates compatibility with chemical pesticides and adjuvants was evaluated on mycelial growth and fungus sporulation in vitro. to assess the efficiency of the antagonist against m. ulei under field conditions, the four isolates were compared to the control by the fungicide mixture propiconazol + mancozeb. the assays showed incompatibility of the antagonistic fungus with the fungicides benomyl, carbendazim, mancozeb, propiconazol, besides the insecticide-acaricide endosulfan. two of the adjuvants tested did not affect the fungus development. it was demonstrated the action of d. pulvinata against m. ulei, in the field, especially for the isolates cen 62 and cen 93, which showed control levels similar to the fungicide standard treatment.

Abstract: The rubber tree (Hevea spp.), cultivated in equatorial and tropical countries, is the primary plant used in natural rubber production. Due to genetic and physiological constraints, inbred lines of this species are not available. Therefore, alternative approaches are required for the characterization of this species, such as the genetic mapping of full-sib crosses derived from outbred parents. In the present study, an integrated genetic map was obtained for a full-sib cross family with simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and expressed sequence tag (EST-SSR) markers, which can display different segregation patterns. To study the genetic architecture of the traits related to growth in two different conditions (winter and summer), quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping was also performed using the integrated map. Traits evaluated were height and girth growth, and the statistical model was based in an extension of composite interval mapping. The obtained molecular genetic map has 284 markers distributed among 23 linkage groups with a total length of 2688.8 cM. A total of 18 QTLs for growth traits during the summer and winter seasons were detected. A comparison between the different seasons was also conducted. For height, QTLs detected during the summer season were different from the ones detected during winter season. This type of difference was also observed for girth. Integrated maps are important for genetics studies in outbred species because they represent more accurately the polymorphisms observed in the genitors. QTL mapping revealed several interesting findings, such as a dominance effect and unique segregation patterns that each QTL could exhibit, which were independent of the flanking markers. The QTLs identified in this study, especially those related to phenotypic variation associated with winter could help studies of marker-assisted selection that are particularly important when the objective of a breeding program is to obtain phenotypes that are adapted to sub-optimal regions.
Methodology for comparative analysis of sustainability in agroforestry systems
Lopes, Saulo Barbosa;Almeida, Jalcione;
Revista de Economia e Sociologia Rural , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20032003000100005
Abstract: the work analyzes the political/institutional links and technological formats of agroforestry systems in the caí and taquari river valleys of the brazilian state of rio grande do sul in an effort to determine a value for their ability to endure: their sustainability. sustainability indicators are created for the analysis of these systems. the indicator values will be used to create a sustainability index (si) for each studied agroforestry system and to identify each system?s sustainability pattern. the different agroforestry systems will also be classified according to their structural characteristics. analysis of the identified patterns and indexes will reveal the adequacy of the methodology employed and the consequence of each system?s institutional arrangement, technological format, and sustainability pattern. the agro forestry system that combines exotic forest species with watermelon and the system that combines native forest species with citrus fruit stand out as being most sustainable while, from an institutional perspective, those systems that were linked in an "associative" arrangement had the highest sustainability index values.

Dinámica de reacciones unimoleculares en fase gas: Desviaciones del comportamiento estadístico
Martínez-Nú?ez, Emilio;Vázquez, Saulo A.;
Química Nova , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422002000400013
Abstract: the present review summarizes the most relevant results of our research group obtained recently in the field of unimolecular reaction dynamics. the following processes are specifically analyzed: the isomerization, dissociation and elimination in methyl nitrite, the fragmentation reactions of the mercaptomethyl cation, the c-co dissociation in the acetyl and propionyl radicals, and the decomposition of vinyl fluoride. in all the cases, only state- or energy-selected systems are considered. special emphasis is paid to the possibility of systems exhibiting non-statistical behavior.

Abstract: cattle ranching is the main causes of deforestation in the brazilian amazon region. this paper analyses the proximate causes of deforestation using linear regressions with panel data. the model evaluates the contribution of the main land uses for deforestation from 2000 to 2006. deforestation data from inpe-prodes, number of heads of cattle, and area of temporary and permanent crops from ibge are the data used in the analysis (782 municipalities). the result of the regressions shows that deforestation is strongly associated with cattle ranching. soybean plantations are also strongly related with deforestation in the model. this trend is reinforced by the growth in demand for meat in the domestic and international markets. to be effective in reducing deforestation rates, public policies must therefore act on the underlying causes of deforestation, reducing the forces that lead to its expansion on the area where deforestation is occurring.

Um estudo do preconceito na perspectiva das representa??es sociais: análise da influência de um discurso justificador da discrimina??o no preconceito racial

Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79722003000100010
Abstract: this paper analyses the influence, from a social representations view, of a justifying discourse about racial prejudice. in an experiment (n = 120), it was presented to participants a scenario where a shop manager hires a white girl discriminating a black one. half of participants also received a discourse justifying the manager's decision. the results show that the representation of that decision is organized in two principles: professional evaluation and justice perception. the participants who had access to the justifying discourse considered the manager's decision as been more professional and less unfair than the participants who did not see that discourse. the former group was also more tended to hire the white girl, while the other group did not show a racial preference. the discussion presents modern prejudice as a result of ideological discourses produced by majority groups to justify their social position.
