Abstract:
A phenocopy is defined as a clinical non-inherited phenotype in an indi-vidual, with environmental induction, which is identical to the genetically determined phenotype of another. Until February 2017, the IUIS (Interna-tional Union of Immunological Societies) reported in its classification 354 innate immunity errors and a final group (classification table IX) with con-ditions that are not part of the innate alterations and are called phenocopies. These are classified into two types, the associated with somatic mutations and those associated with auto-antibodies. The phenotypes that occur by any of the mechanisms mentioned are complex and varied. It is necessary to know the clinical manifestations of the pathologies classified in this group to enrich the possible differential diagnoses in individuals with suspected immunodeficiency.

Abstract:
Introduction: Primary immunodeficiencies are a spectrum of diseases that encompasses alteration of the innate and adaptive immune response. Isolated lymphocytopenia may be a manifestation of primary immunodeficiency, which is rarely considered as a diagnostic option by non-immunological physicians. Objectives: To conduct a brief review of the primary immunodeficiencies that are most frequently associated with lymphocytopenia in order to provide a resource that will help non-immunological clinicians to recognize and appropriately refer to these cases. Materials and Methods: Review of the literature with scientific articles indexed in English and Spanish. We consulted Pubmed database with the keywords: primary immunodeficiencies and severe combined immu-nodeficiencies. The limit of time was 5 years and only review papers. Re-sults: The search in the database results in 68 papers and we analyzed 35 articles because the objective of the review was Severe Combined Immu-nodeficiencies. Discussion: Persistent lymphopenia (usually <2500 xmm3) detected in blood cell cytometry that accompanies severe, recurrent infec-tions, autoimmune manifestations, atopy and cancer may suggest severe combined immunodeficiency. Causes of secondary immunodeficiency such as HIV should be ruled out. Conclusions: Persistent lymphopenia can be associated with severe combined immunodeficiency. The study should be extended in these cases by a specialist or refer the patient to a referral center for a complete evaluation.

Abstract:
Purpose: A 40-year-old male with a severe corneal melting, peripheral infiltration and nasal perforation in the right eye after a not affiliated case of urethritis is reported. Methods: Retrospective case report. Results: A sample of conjunctival discharge was sent to culture, in where Gram-diplococci grew and therefore a systemic antibiotic treatment was initiated. Given the severity of the clinic, a penetrating keratoplasty is conducted two days after admission and the corneal button was sent to microbiology, which polymerase chain reaction was positive for Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Conclusion: Despite it being a rare process in an adult, keratitis caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae should be suspected in all sexually active patients with conjunctivitis and with a clinic genitourinary medical history. The systemic therapy showed a superior effectiveness in combination with topical therapy than the last one on its own.
In Silico and in Vitro Approach for the Understanding of the Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitory Activity of Uruguayan Tannat Grape Pomace and Propolis Poliphenols  [PDF]

Abstract: The use of food additives with xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activity offers an alternative approach to hyperuricemic and gout disease treatment, and provides an example of antioxidant nutraceutics. The in vitro and in silico XO inhibitory activity of polyphenols from Uruguayan Tannat grape pomaces and propolis extracts was evaluated as well as the scavenging capacity of said compounds. When comparing propolis and grape pomace samples, the in vitro studies demonstrated that polyphenols extracted from propolis are more active as free radical scavengers than those from Tannat grape pomace. Both natural products effectively inhibited XO but the capacity of phenols present in GP is higher than the one present in P. The high content of anthocyanins in GP, absent in P, could account for this observation. In silico assays allowed us to determine relevant ligand-receptor interactions between polyphenols, from a database built with previously reported polyphenols from both natural products, and the active site of XO. The in silico results showed that compound (E)-isoprenylcaffeate from propolis was the best potential XO inhibitor displaying hydrophobic aromatic interaction between the conjugated ring of the caffeate moiety and polar interactions between hydroxyl groups from caffeate with the active site polar residues. Among grape pomaces, the Cyanidin-3-O-(6-(E)-p-coumaroyl)-glucoside was the best XO inhibitor; its moiety oxychromenyl being relevant to the docking stabilization. All these results lead us to propose Uruguayan propolis and Tannat grape pomace extracts as food additives as well as phytopharmaceuticals to decrease the uric acid levels in gout disease and to act against oxidative stress.
Interlinked nonlinear subnetworks underlie the formation of robust cellular patterns in Arabidopsis epidermis: a dynamic spatial model

Abstract: Steady states of the meta-GRN model correspond to gene expression profiles typical of hair and non-hair epidermal cells. The simulations also render spatial patterns that match the cellular arrangements observed in root and leaf epidermis. As in actual plants, such patterns are robust in the face of diverse perturbations. We validated the model by checking that it also reproduced the patterns of reported mutants. The meta-GRN model shows that interlinked sub-networks contribute redundantly to the formation of robust hair patterns and permits to advance novel and testable predictions regarding the effect of cell shape, signalling pathways and additional gene interactions affecting spatial cell-patterning.The spatial meta-GRN model integrates available experimental data and contributes to further understanding of the Arabidopsis epidermal system. It also provides a systems biology framework to explore the interplay among sub-networks of a GRN, cell-to-cell communication, cell shape and domain traits, which could help understanding of general aspects of patterning processes. For instance, our model suggests that the information needed for cell fate determination emerges from dynamic processes that depend upon molecular components inside and outside differentiating cells, suggesting that the classical distinction of lineage versus positional cell differentiation may be instrumental but rather artificial. It also suggests that interlinkage of nonlinear and redundant sub-networks in larger networks is important for pattern robustness. Pursuing dynamic analyses of larger (genomic) coupled networks is still not possible. Abstract: Introducción: Generalmente, la actitud se ha definido como la fuerza integradora fundamental en el desarrollo de la personalidad y que da consistencia a la conducta del individuo. Objetivo: Determinar la actitud del personal de enfermería, ante el dolor en la infancia. Material: El universo estuvo constituido por 121 enfermeros(as) que laboran en los servicios pediátricos del nivel secundario de salud en la provincia de Cienfuegos (Cuba). Método: Se realizó un estudio observacional y descriptivo en los servicios de atención pediátrica; se les presentó un cuestionario para identificar la actitud que tienen hacia el ni o con dolor y se relacionó dicha actitud con las variables de experiencia laboral y formación continuada. El análisis se efectuó valorando las diferencias entre las frecuencias de las respuestas de los distintos grupos de participantes, para lo que se utilizó la prueba de Chi cuadrado. La comparación de medias se efectuó con la prueba t de Anova para grupos independientes. Se consideró significación estadística una p < 0,05. Resultados: Dentro de los principales resultados, se destaca que el 71.1% de los participantes tiene una actitud desfavorable hacia el dolor, lo que se relaciona significativamente con la capacitación. Conclusiones: En la medida en que se incrementan las acciones capacitantes, la actitud ante el dolor se hace más favorable. Introduction: Broadly speaking, attitude can be defined as one of the basic elements in personality development, which shapes a person's behavior. Objetive: To determine the attitude of nursing professionals to pain in children. Material: The universe of subjects consisted of 121 male and female nurses who worked in pediatric services at secondary-level health facilities in the province of Cienfuegos (Cuba). Method: A descriptive observational study was performed in the pediatric services of these health centers. The subjects were given a questionnaire to identify their attitude towards pain in children. This attitude was related to the variables, work experience and continuing education. The differences between response frequencies of the groups of participants were analyzed by means of the chi square test. Mean values were compared by using the Anova t-test for independent groups. The value regarded as statistically significant was p < 0.05. Results: The results obtained showed that 71.1% of the participants have a negative attitude towards pediatric pain, and that this attitude is significantly related to their training. The effect of the 1997-1998 ENSO on the benthic macrofaunal biomass in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico

Abstract: Long term macrofaunal biomass measurements made since 1987 were used to evaluate the effect of episodic inputs of biogenic carbon during ENSO on the shelf and slope benthos in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. This study was based on the hypothesis that wind- induced mixing over long periods on the sea surface of the Gulf of Mexico increases primary productivity exported to depth, that trophically sustains the benthic community by enhancing the macrofaunal biomass. The content of organic nitrogen in sediment was used to estimate sediment organic enrichment. Geographical and seasonal changes recorded previously in the region showed that macrofaunal biomass maxima occur during mixing in the water column and decrease with the onset of stratification. Macrofaunal biomass recorded during 1998 was larger than in previous years: shelf 0.93±0.22 gC.m-2, slope 0.55±0.23 gC.m-2, as compared to shelf 0.57±0.11gC.m-2, slope 0.18±0.09 gC.m-2. The shelf macrofaunal biomass showed a large variability in contrast to the values recorded on the slope. Seasonal inputs of phytodetritus produce sediment enrichment and correlate with macrofaunal biomass changes (shelf r= 0.77; slope r= 0.85). ENSO promotes stochastic pulses of phytodetrital material induced by wind forcing that enrich the sediment and lead to a significant increase in the macrofaunal biomass.
