Abstract: Tuberculosis and the taeniasis-cysticercosis complex, typical cases of zoonosis, have great importance for public health, since they cause economic liabilities to the Brazilian beef production chain. They are actually a synonym of technical inadequateness in Good Production Practices. Both diseases have existed since ancient times and their occurrence should be controlled by basic sanitary measures. However, there is a significant neglect attitude by authorities of countries with high occurrence rates, or rather, tropical underdeveloped nations, to focus on public policies for the control and decrease of the prevalence and the occurrence of these diseases. Current review elucidates the epidemiological profile of the diseases and contributes towards the elucidation and establishment of measures ensuring control.

Abstract: Informal fish marketing is an important source of food and income for many families. However, it is also a public health issue, since the quality of fish can be compromised during marketing. The microbiological quality of fish sold in town fairs in the municipalities of the Bahia Reconcavo region, Brazil, was assessed to characterize isolates based on antimicrobial susceptibility and to investigate gene virulence. Samples of mullets (Mugil sp.), mussels (Mytella sp.), and mollusks (Anomalocardia brasiliana) were collected in town fairs in the municipalities of Cachoeira, Cruz das Almas, and Santo Ant ?nio de Jesus. The presence of mesophylls, molds and yeasts, total coliforms, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus was evaluated. E. coli and S. aureus isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility tests and the presence of the gene stx in E. coli isolates was investigated. Total coliforms and S. aureus ranged between 0 and 9.50 log CFU/g, while high counts of mesophylls, molds, and yeasts were detected. E. coli had greater resistance (76.8%) to amoxicillin and S. aureus had greater sensitivity to gentamicin. The stx gene was not identified in any of the samples studied. Results showed that some fish sold in the town fairs of the three municipalities possessed unsatisfactory microbiological quality, which may pose risks to consumer health, and may be vectors for the dissemination of bacteria resistant to different antimicrobial agents.

Abstract: poultry litter applications can improve biological, physical, and chemical soil attributes. this study aimed at evaluating the effect of sequential turkey litter doses on properties of soil under a rotational grazing system with brachiaria decumbens l., in portelandia, goiás state, brazil. the experiment was carried out in a split-plot randomized blocks design, with four replications. treatments consisted of turkey litter doses [no litter, 8.7 mg ha-1 (2008), 16.5 mg ha-1 (2008 + 2009), and 30.9 mg ha-1 (2008 + 2009 + 2010)], for plots, with the two highest doses resulting from the accumulation of litter applications, and three sampled soil depths (0-5 cm, 5-10 cm, and 10- 20 cm), for split-plots. sequential applications of turkey litter doses improved soil fertility, increasing the ph, p, k, and base saturation rates, as well as organic carbon, total and particulate nitrogen contents, and decreasing aluminum saturation. lower doses of turkey litter stimulated the soil microbial activity, promoting the mineralization of the organic matter particulate fraction, however, there was no effect on soil aggregation.
Loyalty in the supermarket
Vieira, Valter A.;Damacena, Cláudio;
BAR. Brazilian Administration Review , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1807-76922007000300005
Abstract: loyalty has been a hot topic in marketing management, not only for academics, but also for managers. in that sense, the main goal of this paper is to identify the variables that discriminate loyalty groups. therefore, seven hypotheses have been proposed which might have an impact on loyalty groups. based on discriminant analysis, the paper analyzes and discusses the data, and presents a conclusion that the more important variables on loyalty in the supermarket are affective commitment, satisfaction with its environment and value provided by supermarket experiences. moreover, the results also indicated that the theoretical model achieved a variance in the loyalty construct of canonical r-squared = 0.78. it could be considered a good value to the final model. final considerations and study limitations conclude the paper.

Abstract: the evaluation of the health systems of nations has been gaining increasing importance among health managers. among the evaluation tools for the performance of health systems, nationwide health surveys have been more and more used to evaluate the health status of the population and satisfaction with healthcare from the user's point of view. most national health surveys do not use simple random sampling, either due to budget restrictions or because time constraints associated with data collection. in general, a combination of several probabilistic sampling methods is used to select a representative sample of the population, which is called complex sampling design. among the several sampling techniques, the most frequently used are simple random sampling, stratified sampling and cluster sampling. as a result of this process, the next concern is the statistical analysis of the data from complex samples. this paper deals with issues related to data analysis obtained from surveys using complex sampling designs. it discusses the problems that arise when the statistical analysis does not incorporate the sampling design. when the design is neglected, traditional statistical analysis, based on the assumption of simple random sampling, might produce improper results not only for the mean estimates but also for standard errors, thus compromising results, hypothesis testing, and survey conclusions. the world health survey (whs) carried out in brazil, in 2003, is used to exemplify complex sampling methods.
