Competition between the invasive macrophyte Caulerpa taxifolia and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica: contrasting strategies

BMC Ecology , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1472-6785-8-20
Abstract: When in competition with P. oceanica, C. taxifolia exhibits increased frond length and decreased Caulerpenyne – CYN content (major terpene compound). In contrast, the length of P. oceanica leaves decreases when in competition with C. taxifolia. However, the turnover is faster, resulting in a reduction of leaf longevity and an increase on the number of leaves produced per year. The primary production is therefore enhanced by the presence of C. taxifolia. While the overall concentration of phenolic compounds does not decline, there is an increase in some phenolic compounds (including ferulic acid and a methyl 12-acetoxyricinoleate) and the density of tannin cells.Interference between these two species determines the reaction of both, confirming that they compete for space and/or resources. C. taxifolia invests in growth rather than in chemical defense, more or less matching the assumptions of the ODT and/or PAT theories. In contrast, P. oceanica apparently invests in defense rather than growth, as predicted by the GDB hypothesis. However, on the basis of closer scrutiny of our results, the possibility that P. oceanica is successful in finding a compromise between more growth and more defense cannot be ruled out.Several theories have been advanced to explain the chemical pathways and tissue differentiation strategies that have evolved to reduce the effect of competition between different individuals of different species. Common theories proposed to explain defense strategies in plants are: Optimal Defense Theory (ODT) [1]; the Growth-Differentiation Balance Hypothesis (GDBH) [2]; the Resource Availability Theory (RAT) [3] and the Plant Apparency Theory (PAT) [4]. ODT predicts that plants should have the highest defense levels in parts that have the highest value in terms of fitness. GDBH predicts that defense allocation will be a result of trade-offs between growth (increasing plant size) and defense (or tissue differentiation); as long as all environmental factors are
Conservation of Eelgrass (Zostera marina) Genetic Diversity in a Mesocosm-Based Restoration Experiment

Abstract: Eelgrass (Zostera marina) forms the foundation of an important shallow coastal community in protected estuaries and bays. Widespread population declines have stimulated restoration efforts, but these have often overlooked the importance of maintaining the evolutionary potential of restored populations by minimizing the reduction in genetic diversity that typically accompanies restoration. In an experiment simulating a small-scale restoration, we tested the effectiveness of a buoy-deployed seeding technique to maintain genetic diversity comparable to the seed source populations. Seeds from three extant source populations in San Francisco Bay were introduced into eighteen flow-through baywater mesocosms. Following seedling establishment, we used seven polymorphic microsatellite loci to compare genetic diversity indices from 128 shoots to those found in the source populations. Importantly, allelic richness and expected heterozygosity were not significantly reduced in the mesocosms, which also preserved the strong population differentiation present among source populations. However, the inbreeding coefficient FIS was elevated in two of the three sets of mesocosms when they were grouped according to their source population. This is probably a Wahlund effect from confining all half-siblings within each spathe to a single mesocosm, elevating FIS when the mesocosms were considered together. The conservation of most alleles and preservation of expected heterozygosity suggests that this seeding technique is an improvement over whole-shoot transplantation in the conservation of genetic diversity in eelgrass restoration efforts.

Os silogismos e as suposi es contraditórias de Raimundo Lúlio como métodos resolutivos de inconsistência Suppositions and contradictory syllogisms as Lullian methods of inconsistency resolution

Trans/Form/A??o , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/s0101-31732012000400014
In the early fourteenth century, Ramond Lully, opposed to university philosophers whom he identified as averroistae, developed no less than two methods for the resolution of inconsistency, in order to refute philosophical theses which diverge from the Christian faith. The first of these uses contradictory syllogisms expressing the structure of an ad hominem argument, while the other is a reductio ad impossibile produced with contradictory suppositions.

Symmetric Identities from an Invariant in Partition Conjugation and Their Applications in q-Series  [PDF]
Sandy H. L. Chen
Open Journal of Discrete Mathematics (OJDM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojdm.2014.42006

For every partition \"\" and its conjugation \"\", there is an important invariant \"\" \"\", which denotes the number of different parts. That is \"\", . We will derive a series of symmetric q-identities from the invariant in partition conjugation by studying modified Durfee rectangles. The extensive applications of the several symmetric q-identities in q-series  [1] will also be discussed. Without too much effort one can obtain much well-known knowledge as well as new formulas by proper substitutions and elementary calculations, such as symmetric identities, mock theta functions, a two-variable reciprocity theorem, identities from Ramanujan’s Lost Notebook and so on.

Measurement of Gamma-Rays Using Smartphones  [PDF]

Open Journal of Applied Sciences (OJAppS) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojapps.2016.61004
Abstract: The CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) image sensor of a smartphone has been known for its sensitivity to gamma-rays. In this research, some smartphones were selected and tested for measurement of gamma-rays emitted from Cesium-137 and Iridium-192 sources. During measurements, the phones were set in video mode while the camera lenses were covered with black adhesive tape to prevent light exposure. Interaction of gamma-rays with the CMOS appeared as flashing bright spots on the image. The bright spots were then counted by using the freely available ImageJ software. Preliminary results indicated that the number of bright spots increased linearly with increase of gamma-ray dose rate. An in-house Android application software was then developed for real-time counting of the bright spots. The application software also allowed users to input a calibration equation so that the phones could simultaneously convert the count rate to display in dose rate. This research demonstrated that, after appropriate calibration, smartphones could be used as gamma-ray measuring devices for radiation safety control involving high activity sources such as in industrial radiography, gamma-ray irradiation facility and medical treatment.

Economia Aplicada , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-80502006000300003
Abstract: the paper econometrically investigates returns for education in brazil, taking as reference data from the pesquisa sobre padr?o de vida (ppv-ibge) previously not explored in that context. earnings equations are considered for men and women in terms of the sample selection correction procedure conceived by heckman, including a measure for quality in education and a more direct measurement of experience. the obtained results indicate similar returns as compared to the previous literature.

Resende, Marcelo;Wyllie, Ricardo;
Estudos Econ?micos (S?o Paulo) , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-41612005000300002
Abstract: the article measures industrial agglomeration in the brazilian manufacturing industry in 1995 and 2001. it considers measures that were recently developed by ellison and glaeser (1997), maurel and sédillot (1999) and devereux et al. (2004) that rely in microdata and are theoretically sound. the evidence indicated that a substantial heterogeneity was present across the different sectors. among the leaders there are sectors with very different technological content that only partially coincide with the leading sectors in france and united kingdom. moreover, one can observe substantial changes in the agglomeration patterns between 1995 and 2001.
