Abstract: The purpose of this work was to determine the frequency of diagnoses of depression, suicide attempts, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), Human Immunodefficiency Virus (HIV) and pregnancy, in data collected from 2523 medical records of adolescents between the ages of 10 to 16 years old, and 17 to 25 years old, attended at University Hospital (University Hospital / State University of Londrina). Between the ages of 10 to 16 years old, the diagnoses and gender identification were: depression (6 female, 8 male); suicide attempts (2 female, 2 male); HIV (2 female, 1 male); STDs (8 female, 1 male); and pregnancy (n=227). As for the ages of 17 to 25 years old, the diagnoses and gender identification were: depression (46 female, 7 male); suicide attempts (11 female, 2 male); HIV (19 female, 9 male); STDs (90 female, 22 male); pregnancy (n=2074). These results suggest the increase of studied diagnoses at ages ranging from 17 to 25. Risk behavior started prematurely, around the ages of 10 to 16 years old. These results suggest the use of interventions that increase self-esteem and give proper attention to prevention by means of education and early detection, prior to high school.

Abstract: objective: to compare smokers and never smokers in terms of the following: quality of life; bmi; hospitalizations; functionality; family history of mental disorder; tobacco-related diseases; depression; and psychoactive substance use. methods: we evaluated 167 smokers enrolled in a smoking cessation program at the londrina state university referral center for understanding and treating smoking, together with 272 never-smoking blood donors. we employed the following instruments, all validated for use in brazil: a structured questionnaire for the collection of sociodemographic data; the alcohol, smoking and substance involvement screening test; the world health organization quality of life instrument, brief version (whoqol-bref); and the fagerstr?m test for nicotine dependence. we also applied diagnostic criteria for the investigation of depressive disorders. results: the mean age of the smokers and never smokers was, respectively, 45 and 44 years. females predominated in both groups. smokers more often presented with impaired work/domestic functionality, hospitalizations, depressive disorders, smoking in the household, sedative use and a family history of mental disorders, as well as scoring lower in all domains of the whoqol-bref. the mean age at smoking onset was lower for smokers with depression or using psychoactive substances than for smokers without such comorbidities. diabetes, arterial hypertension, heart disease, respiratory disease and peptic ulcer were more common in smokers than in never smokers. the mean bmi was lower in the smokers than in the never smokers. conclusions: this study suggests that, for smoking cessation programs, subgroups of smokers with specific characteristics (early age at smoking onset, tobacco-related diseases, depressive disorders and use of psychoactive substances) should be identified.

Abstract: To examine an association between nicotine dependence with alcohol, other psychoactive use, and depressive disorder. Smokers were recruited from Centro de Referência de Abordagem e Tratamento do Tabagismo at the Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Estadual de Londrina (AHC/ UEL). All subjects were informed and gave then written consent for the research as approved by the Ethics Research Committee of Universidade Estadual de Londrina. The measures used were: structured questionnaire, alcohol, smoking, and psychoactive substance involvement screening test (ASSIST v 3.0), the Fagerstr m test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), and the Diagnostic Interview for Research on Depressive disorder of the World Health Organization. Smokers presented the following socio-demographic characteristics: prevalence of the female sex and mean age of 47 years old with capacity for domestic activities and work. The mean age of onset of cigarette use for smokers was 16 years old. Fagerstr m’s test presented a medium punctuation of 6, so much for users of substances psicoativas, as for the ones that they don’t use them. Relationship between serious depression and the of psychoactive substances use was relevant for the research. This study evidenced an association among the use of the tobacco and other psychoactive substances, and depressive disorder. The health professional in smoking cessation intervention would be to identify subgroups of adult smokers, associated with depression, psychoactive substance use, and promote an intervention in both comorbidities and larger effectiveness of the smoking cessation. Abstract: this article presents some reflections on mental health, considered in this context as historical production in correlation with the emergence of psychiatry and its object - mental disease. it intends to discuss, along with the emergence of this knowledge that creates forms of life to the subject, the process of identification with a diagnostic name and other questions that pass through the thematic of medicalization, introducing the mental health's discussion in a critical perspective. to think about the production of other names to the subject, new kinds of subjectivities, requires searching for points of resistance, where new practices of oneself in reference to the body and health can conduce to new names for health.
Bornavirus y enfermedades neuropsiquiátricas

Acta Médica Costarricense , 2006,
Abstract: the disease caused by borna disease virus (bdv), known as fatal encephalitis, has been diagnosed in horses and sheeps en central europe for over a century. infected animals show changes in the behaviour such as anxiety, separation of the herd, and hyperactivity. this signs can be found in humans with psychiatric syndromes like bipolar disease, depression, schizophrenia, or idiopathic diseases. the manifestations in infected animals are due to the immune response against the infected cells in the central nervous system. since 1980, serological evidence of bdv infection has been reported in humans and many suggested an association of specific antibodies or viral particles with psychiatric manifestations. because most of the studies have been done in developed countries where epidemiological manifestations are different to those observed in tropical developing countries, it is necessary to do rigorous analysis to corroborate or refute the effect of bdv in some mental diseases.
