Abstract: In order to help companies to improve their competetiveness, it is important to develop new design methodologies. In this framework, a Functional And Robust Design (FARD) methodology dedicated to routine design of “highly productive” modular product ranges is proposed including principles of functional analysis, Design For Assembly (DFA), and techniques of modelling and simulation for ergonomics consideration. This paper focuses on the application of this original method applied to mechanical vibration and ergonomics problems of a scraper. Including biomechanical aspect in the design methodology, it is possible to identify the impact of a vibration tool on its users using numerical models of the tool coupled to a finite element model of the human hand. This method can proactively warn very early, in the design process, the risks of causing musculoskeletal disorders and facilitate an optimization of the mechanical tool. This study is a first step in a context of human-centered design.

Abstract: Requirements for the respect of the environment encourage to reduce the impact of human activity on the nature. Civil engineering answers these requirements by the development of ecological construction materials. This paper deals with the transformation of clay raw materials which enable the processing of environmentally friendly construction materials: in addition to their biodegradability, the alveolar fired clay materials allow energy saving in home heating thanks to their thermal isolation properties. But their manufacturing is a high energy consumption process, in particular during compaction, drying and firing which contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases. The goal of this paper is to study the rheology of clay pastes in order to develop low energy in manufacturing processes. For this purpose, theoretical and experimental approaches were carried out on six clay varieties. In the theoretical approach, a finite element (FE) simulation model has been developed for pressing a non-rigid material predicting deformations and stresses occurring within the clay structure. Experiments have then been carried out to validate the finite element modelling. In this experimental approach, the clay pastes were transformed with water content respecting the Atterberg limits which determine the plasticity of clays. The samples compaction has been carried out under variable loadings in order to determine the suitable low energy consumption loading.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to compare testers for discrimination and evaluation of the combining ability of 64 s2 families from the maize (zea mays l.) hybrid cms-39. the families were evaluated based on their performance per se and in crossing to three broad base testers. the testers were br-201, a double hybrid, and two populations, cms-50 and cms-39. the topcrosses and s2 families were evaluated in four 8 x 8 lattices, with two replications, set up in adjacent areas on the experimental field of ufla, lavras, mg, brazil, in 1996/97. general and specific combining ability, following partial diallel, and the heterosis of each topcross based on the performance of s2 families per se were estimated. estimates of correlations were obtained from performance means of the s2 families and the hybrids with the different testers. it was only possible to discriminate the testers according to combining ability and heterosis estimates. population cms-50 was identified as the best tester.

Abstract: O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar testadores para discrimina o e avalia o da capacidade de combina o de 64 famílias S2 de milho (Zea mays L.), provenientes do composto CMS-39. As famílias S2 foram avaliadas pelo seu desempenho per se e em cruzamento com três testadores de base genética ampla. Estes foram constituídos pelo híbrido duplo BR-201, pela própria popula o CMS-39 e a CMS-50. Os topcrosses e famílias S2 foram avaliados em quatro látices 8 x 8, com duas repeti es, instalados em áreas contíguas no campo experimental do Departamento de Biologia da Universidade Federal de Lavras, em Lavras, MG, no ano agrícola 1996/97. Estimou-se a capacidade geral e específica de combina o, considerando-se dialelo parcial, e a heterose em rela o às famílias S2 per se. Foram obtidas estimativas das correla es do desempenho médio das famílias S2 per se e dos seus híbridos com os diferentes testadores. Constatou-se que só foi possível discriminar os testadores de acordo com a capacidade de combina o e das estimativas das heteroses. A popula o CMS-50 destacou-se como a melhor testadora.

Abstract: Out of 100 hours of engineering work, only 20 are dedicated to real engineering and 80 are spent on what is considered as routine activities. Readjusting the ratio of innovative vs. routine work is a considerable challenge in the product lifecycle management (PLM) strategy. Therefore, the main objective is to develop an approach in order to accelerate routine processes in engineering design. The proposed methodology called FabK consists of capturing manufacturing knowledge and its application towards the design verification and validation of new engineering designs. The approach is implemented into a Web-based PLM prototype and a Computer Aided Design system. A series of experiments from an industrial case study is introduced to provide significant results.
Chondroblastoma of the sphenoid bone

Abstract: Introduction: Chondroblastoma is an uncommon cartilaginous benign neoplasm, highly destructive, which specifically appears in the epiphysis of long bones in young patients. Its occurrence is extremely rare in the cranial base, normally occurring in the temporal bone. Objective: To describe a rare case in a patient presenting with a sphenoid bone chondroblastoma that invaded the middle cranial cavity, submitted to a successful surgical resection, without recurrence after 2 years. Case Report: W.J.S, 37 years old, male, forwarded to the otorhinolaryngology service with persistent and strong otalgia for 3 months. He had normal otoscopy and without visible tumorations. The computerized tomography confirmed tumor mass in the left infra-temporal cavity, invading the middle cranial cavity. The biopsy suggested giant cells tumor. After wide resection by frontal approach via orbitozygomatic osteotomy. During the surgery, we confirmed tomographic statements and didn't find temporal bone involvement. The histopathological exam confirmed chondroblastoma. After 18 months after the surgery, he doesn't present with complaints, without motor, sensitive deficits or of cranial nerves and without recurrence tomographic signals. Conclusion: The importance of differential diagnosis of chondroblastoma is remarkable in the cranial base lesions and its therapeutic approach, whose objective must always be the major possible resection with the maximum function conservation.

Abstract: Introdu o: Condroblastoma é uma rara neoplasia benigna cartilaginosa, altamente destrutiva, que caracteristicamente surge na epífise de ossos longos em pacientes jovens. Sua ocorrência é extremamente rara na base do cranio, normalmente ocorrendo no osso temporal. Objetivo: Descrever um raro caso de um paciente apresentando um condroblastoma de osso esfenóide que invadia a fossa média, submetido a ressec o cirúrgica com sucesso, sem recorrência após 2 anos. Relato do Caso: W.J.S., 37 anos, masculino, encaminhado ao ambulatório de otorrinolaringologia com otalgia persistente e de forte intensidade há 3 meses. Apresentava otoscopia normal e sem tumora es visíveis. Tomografia computadorizada evidenciou massa tumoral em fossa infra-temporal à esquerda, invadindo fossa cerebral média. Biópsia sugeria tumor de células gigantes. Realizada ressec o ampla por abordagem anterior via osteotomia orbito-zigomática. Durante a cirurgia, confirmando achados tomográficos, n o foi encontrado envolvimento do osso temporal. Exame histopatológico evidenciou condroblastoma. Após 18 meses da cirurgia, n o apresenta queixas, sem déficits motores, sensitivos ou de nervos cranianos e sem sinais tomográficos de recorrência. Conclus o: Destaca-se a importancia do diagnóstico diferencial do condroblastoma nas les es da base do cranio e sua abordagem terapêutica, cujo objetivo sempre deve ser a maior ressec o possível com a máxima preserva o de fun o.
Investigating the Distribution of Selected Major and Trace Metals in Lithogenic Environment near Cement Factory, Mekelle, Ethiopia  [PDF]

Sixteen physicochemical parameters including four major and ten trace metals were analyzed for seven top soil and six top stream sediment samples collected around the vicinity of cement factory in Mekelle, Ethiopia. Water and aqua regia extraction techniques were deployed to determine the water soluble and near total concentration of the metals in the samples. Water extraction results verified the magnitude of loading of the metals from anthropogenic sources. The mean values of the water soluble metals are found to exceed the reference values except for Ca and Zn in both lithogenic media indicating the severity of pollution. Spatial distribution of the metals suggested that cement factory dust and traffic emissions represent the most important pollutant sources for the investigated area.  The mean proportion of the major and trace metals in the water soluble phase of soil can be put on a descending order as: Mg (57.76%) > Fe > Ca > K > Na > Mn (3.77%) and Mo (53.17%) > Cu > Co > As > Ni > Zn > Pb
