Abstract: priming is a technique for controlling seed hydration that allows activation of germination metabolic processes but avoiding the emission of the primary root and providing uniformity and better plant performance in the field. the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of hydropriming on germination, emergence and seedling development in gherkins. gherkin seeds of the do norte and nordeste cultivars, represented by three lots, were primed at 20 °c on paper towels until they reached 33.5% (nordeste) or 36.6% (do norte) water content. part of the seeds were dried at room temperature (28-34 ° c) and a relative humidity of 45-55% until water content was 7.0 to 8.5%. the physiological potential of the seeds was determined in the laboratory by evaluating germination rate and speed. later, the percentage and emergence speed index, height and dry mass of seedlings 14 days after sowing were determined in the greenhouse. hydropriming benefitted the germination and vigor characteristics of both cultivars.

Abstract: vigor tests are essential in seed quality control programs and the controlled deterioration test may be used for this purpose, especially for vegetable seeds. the objective of this study was to evaluate the methodology of the controlled deterioration test and to verify its effectiveness in identifying different vigor levels of coriander (coriandrum sativum l.) seed lots. four cultivars ("português", "super verd?o", "tabocas" and "verd?o"), each represented by three seed lots, were tested for germination, first germination, seedling emergence, speed of emergence, seedling height, dry weight of seedlings and controlled deterioration (seeds with moisture contents of 18, 21 and 24% to 45 oc for 24 and 48 hours). the controlled deterioration test may be used to evaluate the physiological potential of coriander seeds, and the combination of 21% water at 45 oc for 24 hours is the most recommended treatment.

Abstract: this study aimed to evaluate the viability of catanduva seeds stored for 210 days under controlled and uncontrolled environmental conditions (laboratory), in plastic, paper and glass packaging. the experimental design was completely randomized in a sub-subdivided plot, where the main plot were the storage conditions (laboratory and cold room) and sub-plots consisted of the packaging (plastic and paper bags and glass bottles) and sub-sub-plots of the storage times (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 and 210 days). the tests were conducted in the laboratory and greenhouse. evaluations were made every 30 days of the percentage of germination and the rate of germination velocity in the laboratory and of seedling emergence in the greenhouse. the seed viability of catanduva decreased as a function of storage time during the 210 days. catanduva seeds (piptadenia moniliformis benth.) can be packed for 210 days either in glass bottles or plastic bags without losing their physiological potential. the controlled environment (18-20 oc, ±60% rh) is the most suitable.

Abstract: different procedures of the accelerated aging test were evaluated to obtain the physiological quality of cucumber (cucumis sativus l.) seeds and the efficiency of using saturated salt solution in the control of water uptake by seeds. five seed lots of the cv rubi, were tested for germination, seedling emergence, conventional accelerated aging and salt saturated accelerated aging tests. results showed that the accelerated aging test (conventional and salt saturated), using the 72 and 96 h, at 38 or 41oc combinations was sufficiently sensitive to detect differences in physiological quality of cucumber seeds. we observed that seed water content after the salt saturated accelerated aging was lower and more uniform, thus presenting advantages in relation to the conventional procedure.

Abstract: this work was carried out with the objective of testing the efficiency of the water stress test of the evaluation of physiological quality of grain sorghum (sorghum bicolor (l.) moench) seeds. six lots of basic seeds of the cultivar ipa-1011 were analyzed by the following tests: germination, first count, cold without soil test, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, field emergency, and seedling length under hydric stress at 0, - 0.3, - 0.6 and -0.9mpa matric potentials. the trials were carried out at the seed laboratory at the experimental field of embrapa-cpatsa, petrolina - pe, in a completely randomized design with four replications. the results indicated that the germination test under water stress of -0,6mpa can be used to estimate the performance of grain sorghum seeds under unfavorable soil water conditions.

Abstract: the objective of the present study was to investigate different procedures for the accelerated aging test to evaluate the physiological quality of anise (pimpinella asinum l.) seeds. fours anise seedlots were tested for germination, seedling emergence, traditional and saturated salt (ssaa) accelerated aging at 41oc, for 48, 72 and 96h. it was concluded that, among the accelerated aging protocols studied, the ssaa for 72h was appropriate to assess the physiological potential of anise seeds. it was also observed that seed water content after ssaa was lower and more uniform, thus presenting advantages in relation to the conventional procedure.

Abstract: three seed lots of watermelon (citrullus lanatus schrad.), cv. crimson sweet, were germinated in blotter paper soaked with solutions of nacl. the effect of water stress during seed germination and development of watermelon seedlings was evaluated by submitting seeds to five osmotic potentials : 0,0; -0,2; -0,4; -0,6 and -0,8 mpa. percentage of germination, first count, abnormal seedlings, seedling length and dry weight were evaluated. results showed that the gradual reduction of the osmotic potential of substrate is harmful to seed germination and development of watermelon seedlings. osmotic potentials lower than -0,4m pa were considered as critical.

Abstract: this work was carried out to test the efficiency of various methods to evaluate the physiological quality of pepper, capsicum annuum l. [cv. all big] seeds, to be utilized for quality control tests and to verify their relationship with field emergence. four pepper seed lots were evaluated for seed water content, germination, germination first count, electrical conductivity at 4 and 24 hours, accelerated aging, cold shock and field emergence. the first count test, accelerated aging and electrical conductivity at 4 and 24 hours were reliable to detect differences in vigor of pepper seed lots. electrical conductivity test at 4 hours was more reliable for the classification of lots by vigor.

Abstract: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia de diferentes métodos para a determina o da qualidade fisiológica de sementes de piment o (Capsicum annuum L.), cv. All Big, procurando obter informa es que possam indicar op es de utiliza o nos programas de controle de qualidade, bem como tornar possível, através de testes de laboratório, a identifica o do potencial de emergência das plantulas em campo. Para tanto, foram avaliadas sementes de quatro lotes, pelos testes de germina o, primeira contagem de germina o, condutividade elétrica após quatro e 24 horas, envelhecimento acelerado, frio em rolo de papel sem solo, emergência das plantulas em campo e grau de umidade. Os resultados indicaram que os testes de primeira contagem de germina o, envelhecimento acelerado e condutividade elétrica durante quatro e 24 horas de embebi o das sementes s o os mais indicados para a separa o dos lotes de sementes de piment o em diferentes níveis de vigor. A condutividade elétrica avaliada após quatro horas de acondicionamento das sementes mostrou-se o método mais eficiente para a estratifica o dos lotes em fun o do vigor.

Abstract: the objective of the present work was to study the methodology of the accelerated aging test to evaluate the physiological quality of eggplant (solanum melongena l.) seeds, when compared to the saturated salt accelerated aging. fours lots of the embú cultivar were tested for germination, seedling emergence, traditional and saturated salt accelerated aging at 41oc for 48, 72 and 96h. it was concluded that further research is still needed to adjust the accelerated aging test procedures to assess seed vigor of eggplant seeds.
