TAF Preventive Medicine Bulletin , 2008,
Abstract: AIM/BACKGROUND: The purpose of this research is to determine the knowledge of nurses and midwives who are working at primary health care services. METHODS: The information regarding the research has been given to the nurses and midwives working at primary health centers of Manisa, and 70 nurses and midwives have accepted to attend the research. In collecting the data, two questionnaire forms prepared by the researchers have been used and these forms are composed of two parts. In the first part of the questionnaire, there are questions about the sociodemografhic characteristics of midwives and nurses; in the second one the questions are related to the symptoms and causes of mental-handicap and the attempts regarding the mentally-handicapped child and his family. RESULTS: The nurses and midwives have stated that the most important cause of mental handicap is marriages among relatives (92.9%). and that in a situation of not being able to fullfill mental motor skills in relation to age, they suspect mental handicap (90%). They have also stated that they mostly have or can have difficulty in communucating with the mentally-handicapped child (64%). CONCLUSION: As a result, the nurses and midwives have adequate knowledge about the causes and symptoms of mental handicap. On the other hand, their knowledge regarding the services to be planned in care of mentally-handicapped children is limited. At the primary health care services, educational studies can be planned in order to give better health service for mentally-handicapped individuals. [TAF Prev Med Bull. 2008; 7(2): 127-132]

Eurasian Journal of Medicine , 2011,
Abstract: Objective: Although the genetic etiology of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is known, limited information is available regarding the regulation of inflammation during attack-free periods. The aim of this study was to determine the alterations in serum copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se) levels that may be associated with inflammation during attack-free periods in FMF patients.Materials and Methods: This study included 33 patients with FMF and 30 healthy volunteers. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), the serum C-reactive protein (CRP) level and serum levels of Cu, Zn and Se in FMF patients and healthy volunteers were assessed by the atomic absorption spectrophotometry method. Results: ESR and serum CRP levels and serum Cu and Zn levels were similar between patients with FMF during an attack-free period and healthy controls (p>0.05). Serum Se levels in the patient group were significantly higher than in the control group (p<0.05).Conclusion: Our study shows that levels of trace elements in serum are variable in patients with FMF during attack-free periods. Serum Se concentrations may at least in part contribute to the subclinical inflammation in FMF patients during attack-free periods. However, further studies are necessary to confirm this result.

Eurasian Journal of Medicine , 2011,
Abstract: Objective: Behcet’s disease is a multisystem inflammatory disorder, and its etiology has not been defined clearly yet. In this study, we aimed to investigate the antistreptolysin O (ASO) levels of patients with Behcet’s disease. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients with Behcet’s disease and 30 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. We measured erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), serum C-reactive protein (CRP), and ASO levels in both groups. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups with respect to demographic data (p>0.05). The ASO levels of the patients and the controls were 288.4±145.7 and 170.6±142.4 ng/ml, respectively. In the patients with Behcet’s disease, ASO (p<0.01) and ESR (p<0.05) values were significantly higher than in the healthy controls. There was no other significant difference in serum CRP levels between the patients and the controls. We could not find any correlation among ASO, CRP, and ESR values. Conclusion: Our results suggest that serum ASO levels may increase in patients with Behcet’s disease. Further studies are needed in order to define the relationship between ASO levels and inflammation status in Behcet’s disease.

Clinics , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1807-59322011000500002
Abstract: objectives: this study investigated the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels of patients with behcet's disease. design and methods: thirty-two patients with behcet's disease and 31 matched healthy controls were enrolled in this study. the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (esr) and the levels of c-reactive protein (crp), serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d, calcium (ca), phosphate (p), and total alkaline phosphatase (alp) were measured in both groups. results: there were no significant differences between the two groups regarding demographic data. the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels of patients and controls were 13.76 (range: 4.00-35.79) and 18.97 (range: 12.05-36.94) ng/ml, respectively. in patients with behcet's disease, 25-hydroxyvitamin d values were significantly lower than those of the healthy controls (p<0.001). serum ca, p, and alp levels were similar in both groups. serum esr and crp levels were significantly higher in patients than controls (p<0.05). there was no correlation between 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels and age, body mass index (bmi), disease duration, esr, or crp levels. multivariate regression analysis parameters showed that smoking, alcohol intake, and use of colchicine were the main predictors of 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels. of the parameters studied, the largest impact was due to colchicine therapy (p<0.001). we did not find a significant relationship between the use of corticosteroids and 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels. conclusion: our results suggest that serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels are decreased in patients with behcet's disease. smoking, alcohol intake, and use of colchicine appear to affect vitamin d levels.
The effect of vitamin C and cobalt supplementation on antioxidant status in healthy and diabetic rats
African Journal of Biotechnology , 2009,
Abstract: In the present study, liver, lung, heart and kidney superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) activities, lipid peroxidation, nitrite and vitamin C levels were investigated in diabetic rats. Diabetes induced in rats by streptozotocin (STZ) and the treated rats were received 1 g/l vitamin C with 0.5 mM CoCl2 in drinking water for eigth weeks. In all tissues, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase activities, lipid peroxidation and nitrite levels were significantly increased in diabetic rats at the end of 8th week (p < 0.05) whereas vitamin C level was decreased compared to those of controls. Cobalt with vitamin C treatment of diabetic rats resulted in partial restoration of SOD and CAT activities, thiobarbituric acid reactant substances (TBARS), vitamin C and nitrite levels at all times studied, whereas treatment did not significantly change GSH-Px activity compared to diabetics. These results suggest that cobalt with vitamin C, effectively but could not completely restore the altered endogenous defense systems in diabetic rat liver, lung, heart and kidney tissues.

Dicle Medical Journal , 2008,
Abstract: In this study, the role of visual perception between normal and schizoprenic patients was investigated. According to DSM III R diagnosis criteria by personal arientation inventory, 30 normal and 30 schizophrenic patients were included in the study. Of the visual perception tests, the size constancy was performed on both groups. The decisions of the Size constancy of subjects were obtained by comparing five standart stimuli darwn on a white cartoon whose diameters were 8 cm2 and sixteen comparision stimuli that had the same content but different dimensions with standart stimulus. In this tudy. Two general hypothesis and related five sub-hypothesis were suggested. The size constancy of the subjects were solved by variance analysis and t test methods. As a result,it was seen that visual perception, distance and emotional factors between Normal and schiophrenic patiens were effective in the size constancy.
