Association between Metabolic Syndrome and Erythrocyte Fatty Acid Profile in Mexican Adolescents: A Trans Fatty Acid Approach  [PDF]

Abstract:

The type of fat consumed in the Mexican diet could predispose to the development of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) which has been associated with an increased risk to develop cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Our study included adolescents between 12 and 16 years of age, divided in two groups: Control Group (n = 31) and MS Group (n = 44). Waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting glucose, triglycerides, and HDL-cholesterol were determined. Erythrocytes’ fatty acids methyl esthers were quantified using gas chromatography with ionized flame detector. We identified 16 fatty acids (FA) with chain lengths from C12 to C24, with emphasis in four trans FA (TFA) isomers: vaccenic (C18:1n7t), elaidic (C18:1n9t), linoelaidic (C18:2n6t), and conjugated linoelaidic acids (C18:2n7t). MS Group had a less proportion of: myristic (C14), palmitoleic (C16:1), C18:1n7t, and linoleic acids (C18:2); and a higher one of C18:1n9t, C18:2n7t, and nervonic acids (C24:1) when compared to the control group. C24:1 and C18:1n9t had a significant positive association with MS (OR = 14.17 and OR = 12.94, respectively); whereas C14 (OR = 0.14), C18:1n7t (OR = 0.14), and C18:2 (OR = 0.22) appear to have a protective effect against the disease. The proportion of specific FAs in erythrocytes’ membranes differs between adolescents with MS and healthy controls; these FA not only showed a strong association with MS, but also correlated with most of its individual components. Interestingly, TFA displayed an antagonic behavior; while C18:1n9t had a strong association with MS, apparently C18:1n7t confers a protective effect; these results suggest that analyzing each TFA separately will constitute a more accurate approach to determine the role of TFAs in the pathogenesis of MS or other related metabolic disorders.

Abstract: Whey proteins are known for their high nutritional value and bioactivity, notably great potential is found on α-lactalbumin. The objective of this study was to evaluate antioxidant, antiglycant and ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme)-inhibitory activity of α-lactalbumin peptides obtained from enzymatic hydrolysis with Alcalase through different hydrolysis conditions. The optimization of enzymatic hydrolysis was studied by response surface methodology variating enzyme:substrate ratio (0.0050%, 0.0525% and 0.1000% w/w) and time (0, 30 and 60 minutes) measuring antioxidant activity by ABTS and ORAC-FL (response variables), founding an augment of this activity with time. Characterization of seven samples showed increasing hydrolysis with time. Hydrolysate obtained with 0.1000% w/w and 60 minutes demonstrated higher antioxidant activity related to greater hydrolysis. This hydrolysate did not show antiglycant activity but promoted advanced glycation end products formation with methylglyoxal and glucose. In contrast, this sample showed 30% of ACE inhibition when compared to Captopril, having great potential by enhancing hydrolysis.
Bioaccessibility and Cell Metabolic Activity Studies of Antioxidant Low Molecular Weight Peptides Obtained by Ultrafiltration of α-Lactalbumin Enzymatic Hydrolysates  [PDF]

Abstract: α-lactalbumin (α-LA) might increase its antioxidant potential after hydrolysis. In particular, low molecular weight (LMW) peptides showed greater antioxidant capacity. Different hydrolysis conditions with Alcalase enzyme were optimized with a composite central design and surface methodology. Sample obtained after 0.1% (w/w enzyme:substrate), 60 min hydrolysis, ultrafiltrated with membranes of 3 kDa (named 4 LMW), showed the greatest antioxidant values: 1.574 ± 0.060 and 1.636 ± 0.076 μmolTE/mg of protein for ABTS and ORAC-FL, respectively. Sample 4 LMW produced mild ACE inhibition capacity, 22% related to Captopril. 4 LMW was submitted to in vitro gastrointestinal conditions using α-amylase, pepsin, pancreatin and bile-extract; its antioxidant capacity was enhanced by the shorter peptides released, confirmed by SE-HPLC. Antioxidant capacity of digested 4 LMW sample (D 4 LMW) was 1.743 ± 0.086 and 2.542 ± 0.245 μmolTE/mg of protein for ABTS and ORAC-FL, respectively, showing improvement on bioaccessibility. Intestinal cells viability was higher for D 4 LMW.

Abstract: as a contribution to improve teaching at the university level, this research presents the instructional design of an on-line didactic experience as part of the professional development for the graduate program instructors. references are made to the value of experience for improving pedagogical practice. the value of instructional designing and its theoretical and pedagogical conception are taken into account as well as selecting strategies used to enhance virtual and semi-present learning environment. the following aspects are highlighted: instructional structure, instructor?s expertise in teaching mixed courses, on-line participation, and performance. from this experience we can device a crucial instructional guide for considering and redirecting pedagogical action mediated by technology. the final aim is for instructors to evaluate their performance in order to improve their own teaching.

Abstract: We have shown that expiratory flows increase when expirations are rapidly interrupted in stable asthmatic patients. We hypothesized that a similar increase could be obtained in patients with acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma treated in the Emergency Room. A total of 30 asthmatic patients were randomly allocated into two groups, the study and the control groups. Patients in the study group were connected to a device with an inspiratory line designed to administer pressurized aerosols. The expiratory line passed through a valve completely interrupting flow at 4 Hz, with an open/closed time ratio of 10/3. The control group patients were also connected to the device, but with the valve kept open. Mean expiratory flow at tidal volume (MEFTV) was measured under basal conditions and at 4, 8 and 12 minutes after connecting the patients to the device. All patients received standard treatment throughout the procedure. At all time points MEFTV increased more in the study than in the control group (p < 0.003 by two-way ANOVA). There was no residual effect after disconnection from the device. We conclude that TEFI can rapidly improve expiratory flows in patients with acute exacerbations of asthma, while pharmacologic interventions proceed. Demostramos que el flujo espiratorio máximo, en pacientes asmáticos en estado estable, se incrementaba cuando se generaban rápidas y transitorias interrupciones del flujo. Formulamos la hipótesis de que un incremento similar podría ser observado en pacientes con exacerbación aguda de asma tratados en la sala de emergencias. Un total de 30 pacientes asmáticos fueron distribuidos al azar en dos grupos. Los pacientes del grupo en estudio fueron conectados a un aparato con una vía inspiratoria dise ada para la administración de aerosoles. La vía espiratoria pasaba por una válvula que interrumpía el flujo completamente a 4 hz, con una relación tiempo abierta/tiempo cerrada de 10/3. Los pacientes del grupo control también fueron conectados al aparato pero con la válvula siempre abierta. Se midió el flujo medio de la espiración a volumen circulante en condiciones basales y a los 4, 8 y 12 minutos después de conectado el paciente al equipo. Todos los pacientes recibieron el tratamiento farmacológico estándar a lo largo del ensayo. Se observó un incremento significativamente mayor del flujo espiratorio medio a volumen circulante en el grupo en estudio en comparación al grupo control (p < 0.003 ANOVA de dos vías) durante todo el ensayo. Abstract: Water is a scare resource and for this reason it is necessary to use it wisely. This paper puts forward some techniques and strategies which have been developed in different countries, to minimize wasteful water consumption for domestic use. The reason for this is to avoid considerable public expense which is caused by the purifying of unneccessarily polluted water and by equipment and pipes which are too large for their purpose. Also this paper deals with the state of art on techniques saving money on sanitation and treatment of sewage. El agua es un recurso escaso y por lo tanto se considera cada vez más importante optimizar su uso. En este artículo se exponen algunas técnicas y estrategias desarrolladas, en diversos países, para minimizar las pérdidas y el consumo inútil de agua en usos domésticos y evitar los gastos que supone, a la colectividad, la depuración de agua innecesariamente contaminada, así como el sobredimensionamiento de equipos e instalaciones. También se presenta, de un modo general, el estado de la cuestión en cuanto a posibles ahorros económicos en saneamiento (entendido como las instalaciones sanitarias interiores de la vivienda y la red de evacuación exterior) y en depuración de aguas residuales.
ANALYTIC STUDY OF A PREY-PREDATOR MODEL WITH ALLEE EFFECT

Abstract: The Allee effect is introduced into intraspecific and two-species competitive models. We use phase plane analysis and simulation to investigate the dynamics of these models. Combining simple modeling and simulations, we demonstrate that the Allee effect alone could lead to alternative stable states in two-species competitive systems. In such systems, if interspecific competition is intense, both species may go extinct even if their population densities are high.
