Determining Physical Characteristics of Watersheds in Artvin Province Using SRTM and Topographic Map Data

Abstract: It is a fact that applying Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and associated software and/or modules on studies regarding use and protection of water resources have been increased in recent years. With such programs, some physical characteristics of watersheds including borders, land use, drainage system, slope and elevation can be determined in a quick, detailed and reliable way. In this research, the aim was to use ArcHydro module -integrated with ArcGIS 10.3.1 one of the programs of GIS- to assess some features (borders, drainage, size, steepness, etc.) of river basins located within Artvin province. In order to create Digital Elevation Model (DEM), data from both “Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM)” and “topographical map” was used; thus, providing comparison of the results gathered from these two base maps. In general, it was stated that both SRTM and topographic map data resulted in very close findings in determining watershed characteristics. For example, while the number of large watersheds (10-100 km2) counted as 315 and 312 by SRTM and topographic maps, respectively, the number of very large watersheds (> 100 km2) was 30 according to both base maps. Moreover, in grouping of slope classification, as 89.29% of the province was found to be within the very-steep slope class based on the topographic maps, a very similar result of 87.13% was revealed using SRTM data.
Role of Terracing and Reforestation Efforts on Improving Soil Properties in Degraded Steep Lands

Abstract: Serious land degradation have been occurring during the building of new roads associated with the construction of Deriner Dam, one of 15 large dams planned by the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Affairs and implemented within the Coruh Dam Projects. In this study, whether terracing and planting of seedling efforts in degraded areas as a result of building new roads within erosion control and reforestation efforts have any effect on improving soil characteristics were investigated. In accordance with this purpose, parameters including soil texture, pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, total lime, and electrical conductivity were determined for 45 soil samples taken from three different areas; two of which were erosion control areas where terraces built and planted with acacia and yellow pine seedlings, along an undisturbed (control) area with natural forests. After evaluating statistical analyses run on the soils data, it was determined that the reforestation efforts have resulted in improvements of soil properties at some degree but when they are compared to the soils of the undisturbed natural forest, it is clear that the degree of improvement is not sufficient yet. For example, while the organic matter of 3.71% and pH of 7.69 were determined for the forest area, same parameters were found as 1.13% and 7.99 for the acacia and 0.86% and 7.93 for the yellow pine areas, respectively.

Tissue doppler echocardiography for evaluating left ventricular functions in obese

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate theimpact of childhood obesity on ventricular functions usingtissue Doppler echocardiography.Materials and methods: The mitral tissue Doppler signalswere recorded in the apical four-chamber view, with thesample volume placed at the lateral walls of mitral annulus.The mitral flow was examined with the sample Pulse Dopplerpositioned parallely to flow just at the orifice of the mitralleaflets. Twenty obese (mean age, 161.5±25.8 months)and 20 healthy children (mean age, 151.2±33.5 months)were included to this study.Results: Body mass index (BMI) was significantly higherin obese group (30.92±6.87). Isovolumic relaxation time(IVRT) which is one of the left ventricular (LV) diastolicfunction parameters was 66.10±7.30 ms in obese group,and 58.70±9.06 ms in the control group. IVRT was significantlyhigher in the obese group (p=0.007). In obesegroup, the mitral annulus tissue Doppler E velocity wasdecreased, flow velocity was increased and decrement inEm/Am ratio was significant. We found significant negativecorrelation between BMI and LV Em/Am ratio. Myocardialperformance index (MPI) in obese group and control groupwas 0.50±0.07 and 0.41±0.04, respectively (p<0.001).Between MPI and LV Em/Am ratio there was a significantnegative correlation while MPI showed positive correlationwith BMI. In obese group septal and LV posterior wall thicknesswas shown to be significantly increased compared tothe control group (p<0.001).Conclusion: Our findings, may be important for determinationof the relationship between obesity and cardiovascularrisk factors in children. Tissue Doppler echocardiographicimaging may be useful in revealing this relationship.Key words: obesity, doppler echocardiography, ventricular dysfunction
Clarithromycin-Induced Long QT Syndrome: A Case Report

Abstract: Long QT syndrome develops for a number of reasons. The number of non-antiarrhythmic drugs reported to induce QT interval prolongation with or without torsade de pointes continues to increase. Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic being increasingly used for the treatment of atypical pneumonia. In this paper, we describe a patient who developed long QT prolongation syndrome after receiving clarithromycin for the treatment of atypical pneumonia.
Pediatric risk and index of mortality in an intensive care unit

Abstract: Aim: The purpose of the study is to determine the discriminative ability and calibration of Pediatric Risk of Mortality (PRISM I) I and Pediatric Index of Mortality (PIM) II in predicting the mortality in children admitted to a medical-surgical pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in Turkey.Material and Method: A total of 277 children were evaluated from September 1, 2007, to, August 31, 2008, prospectively. Of these 277 patients, 39 patients (14.7%) died at the end of the PICU stay. Discrimination between death and survival was assessed by calculating the area under the ROC curve for each model. The standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were also determined. Calibration was assessed using Hosmer Lemeshow’s test. Results: In our analysis, PRISM I (area under ROC curve: 0.884; SMR: 1; Hosmer Lemeshow chi-square p value: 0.09) and PIM II (area under ROC curve: 0.912; SMR: 1; Hosmer Lemeshow chi-square p value: 0.30) showed an adequate discrimination between death and survival as well as good calibration.Conclusions: In conclusion, both PRISM I and PIM II are reliable models for evaluating the prognosis of children in PICU. However, PIM II seems to be more useful because of its higher discrimination, better calibration and easier to use. (Turk Arch Ped 2010; 45: 18-24)
Three Patients with Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome: Differential Diagnosis and the Causes of Predisposition

Abstract: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a life-threatening idiosyncratic reaction that occurs after the administration of neuroleptic drugs. It usually appears within the first two weeks of neuroleptic treatment. The tetrad of NMS seen in 50% of patients includes fever, muscle rigidity, altered mental status and evidence of autonomic instability. NMS may be overlooked or its diagnosis may be difficult due to its similarities with some organic and psychiatric disorders. Due to its heterogeneous character, differential diagnosis and supportive treatment are very important when managing these patients. We aimed to present the differential diagnosis and the causes of predisposition in three patients, two with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and one with psychomotor impairment, who were admitted to the medical intensive care unit with a diagnosis of an NMS-like condition related to antipsychotic (olanzapine) treatment.

Abstract: Myocardial noncompaction is a rare type of congenital cardiomyopathy, characterized by trabecular network and deep trabecular recesses located in one or more ventricular segments. Patients generally present with cardiac failure, ventricular arrhythmias, and signs and symptoms related to systemic embolies. We presented two cases of myocardial noncompaction, one with left ventricular involvement and dysfunction, and the other with biventricular involvement and trabecular structures, causing right ventricular outflow tract stenosis which required surgical correction. These cases are remarkable as they had atypical clinical picture including presentation findings and treatment protocols.
The division and bending of green and red semiconductor laser light at the same time  [PDF]

Abstract: In this experimental study, the laser light was split and bended using a specially designed glass lenses at the same time. This process has been done at the atmospheric pressure and room temperature conditions. During the experiments, the semiconductor laser as a source of green and red laser diode is used. In addition, polari- zation, magnetic field, electric field or any other auxiliary materials and systems which affect laser light are not used to bend the laser light. Only transparent glass lenses that are designed specially are used in the experimental study.
