Primary Oropharyngeal Tuberculosis—A Differential Diagnosis to Malignancy  [PDF]
Swati D. Lambor, Dheeraj V. Lambor, Sai Spoorthi R. Nayak, Archan D. Naik
International Journal of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery (IJOHNS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ijohns.2014.33023
Abstract:

Tuberculosis is a communicable disease manifesting as pulmonary and extra pulmonary infection. Extra pulmonary tuberculosis involving pharynx is usually secondary to active pulmonary tuberculosis. Primary oropharyngeal tuberculosis is rare and has been reported in association with immunocompromised states like HIV-AIDS and chronic alcoholism. It has very unusual clinical presentation and sometimes mimics malignancy. We report herewith two cases of primary oropharyngeal tuberculosis, clinically mimicking a malignancy, in immunocompetent adult patients. A high index of suspicion is required to diagnose pharyngeal tuberculosis in patients presenting with ulceroproliferative mass in oropharynx. Histopathological findings of characteristic tuberculous granuloma are confirmatory. Anti-tuberculous therapy gives excellent results within two months of commencing the treatment.

Atypical Gunshot Injury to the Ear: A Case Report  [PDF]
Sai Spoorthi Nayak, Ehrlson De Sousa, Saumyata Neeraj
International Journal of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery (IJOHNS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ijohns.2015.42013
Abstract: Bullet injuries to head and neck are usually associated with high mortality and morbidity due to a number of vital structures lying in close proximity. We present a rare case of air-gun injury with an unusual entry wound. The pellet having a simple trajectory was lodged into middle ear avoiding all important structures.
A Parametric Approach to Non-Convex Optimal Control Problem  [PDF]
S. Mishra, J. R. Nayak
American Journal of Operations Research (AJOR) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ajor.2014.42006
Abstract:

In this paper we have considered a non convex optimal control problem and presented the weak, strong and converse duality theorems. The optimality conditions and duality theorems for fractional generalized minimax programming problem are established. With a parametric approach, the functions are assumed to be pseudo-invex and v-invex.

Evaluation of three topical anaesthetic agents against pain : A clinical study
Nayak R,Sudha P
Indian Journal of Dental Research , 2006,
Abstract: AIM : To compare pain responses of children during local anaesthetic infiltration at bilateral buccal sites prepared with topical application of EMLA 5% cream, benzocaine 18% gel or lignocaine 5% ointment and also to find out the rapidity of onset of action of these agents. METHODS : 60 healthy children aged 6 to 12 years old, received bilateral buccal infiltration following application of topical anaesthetic agents applied in a double blind design. Pain responses were compared based on subject self report using visual analogue scale (VAS) and operator assessment using Sound -Eye -Motor (SEM) scale. RESULTS : Benzocaine gel had the rapidest onset of action. EMLA 5% cream proved to be superior in pain reduction compared to benzocaine and lignocaine. Taste acceptance was better with benzocaine gel. Further studies are required for EMLA cream with an improved formulation more suitable for mucosal application before its routine use in dentistry.
Crossed hemifacial hyperplasia: A diagnostic dilemma
Nayak R,Baliga M
Journal of the Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry , 2007,
Abstract: Crossed hemifacial hyperplasia is a rare condition producing facial asymmetry and overgrowth of the extremities of the opposite side. Very few cases are reported in literature. A case of an 11-year-old female is presented here to supplement existing clinical knowledge with many of the reported clinical and orofacial findings. Emphasis is placed on diagnosis of the condition by thoughtful elimination and the necessity of a multi-disciplinary approach to its management.
D-Branes at angle in pp-wave Background
Rashmi R. Nayak
Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevD.67.086006
Abstract: We show the existence of classical solutions of a system of D3-branes oriented at an arbitrary angle with respect to each other, in a six dimensional pp-wave background obtained from AdS_3\times S^3\times R^4, with NS-NS and R-R 3-form field strength. These D-brane bound states are shown to preserve 1/16 of the supersymmetries. We also present more D-brane bound state solutions by applying T-duality symmetries. Finally, the probe analysis is discussed along with a brief outline of the open string construction.
Cumulative Dragging - An Intrinsic Characteristic of Stationary Axisymmetric Spacetime
A. R. Prasanna,Sai Iyer
Physics , 1997, DOI: 10.1016/S0375-9601(97)00443-X
Abstract: The Cumulative Drag Index defined recently by Prasanna has been generalised to include the centrifugal acceleration. We have studied the behaviour of the drag index for the Kerr metric and the Neugebauer-Meinel metric representing a self-gravitating rotating disk and their Newtonian approximations. The similarity of the behaviour of the index for a given set of parameters both in the full and approximated forms, suggests that the index characterises an intrinsic property of spacetime with rotation. Analysing the index for a given set of parameters shows possible constraints on them.
Centrifugal force in Kerr geometry
Sai Iyer,A R Prasanna
Physics , 1992, DOI: 10.1088/0264-9381/10/1/003
Abstract: We have obtained the correct expression for the centrifugal force acting on a particle at the equatorial circumference of a rotating body in the locally non-rotating frame of the Kerr geometry. Using this expression for the equilibrium of an element on the surface of a slowly rotating Maclaurin spheroid, we obtain the expression for the ellipticity (as discussed earlier by Abramowicz and Miller) and determine the radius at which the ellipticity is maximum.

Time Series Modeling of River Flow Using Wavelet Neural Networks  [PDF]
B. Krishna, Y. R. Satyaji Rao, P. C. Nayak
Journal of Water Resource and Protection (JWARP) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/jwarp.2011.31006
Abstract: A new hybrid model which combines wavelets and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) called wavelet neural network (WNN) model was proposed in the current study and applied for time series modeling of river flow. The time series of daily river flow of the Malaprabha River basin (Karnataka state, India) were analyzed by the WNN model. The observed time series are decomposed into sub-series using discrete wavelet transform and then appropriate sub-series is used as inputs to the neural network for forecasting hydrological variables. The hybrid model (WNN) was compared with the standard ANN and AR models. The WNN model was able to provide a good fit with the observed data, especially the peak values during the testing period. The benchmark results from WNN model applications showed that the hybrid model produced better results in estimating the hydrograph properties than the latter models (ANN and AR).
