Revista Brasileira de Fruticultura , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-29452012000100023
Abstract: the objective of the present study was to evaluate fruit quality of 'valência' (citrus sinensis (l.) osb.) oranges harvested from an orchard conducted according to the conventional system and from an organic orchard production system. the orchards were established in july 2001 at a spacing of 2,5m x 5,0 m, both with an area of 0,25 ha and 300 m distant from each other. fruit quality was determined from 2005 up to 2010 from five samples/treatment collected from five trees every year. the harvested oranges were analyzed for average fruit mass (mmf), juice contents (ts), soluble solids (sst) and titratable acidity (att). the ratio sst/att was as well calculated. only in 2010 ascorbic acid contents and the pericarp color were determined. in the conventional production system mineral fertilizers, dolomitic calcareous, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides were utilized. in the organic production system liquid compost, biofertilizers and bordeaux mixture were utilized. the soil was maintained covered with spontaneous vegetation during the winter season with avena strigosa and vicia sativa and vigna unguiculata were added during the summer season. no differences as to quality parameters were determined amongst both production systems except for sst and ascorbic acid which were highest in the conventional production system. oranges from the conventional orchard also had a more intense orange color in comparison to the organically produced fruit.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to assess the effect of six rootstocks on yield, fruit quality, and growth of 'oneco' mandarin during the first seven harvesting seasons, in butiá, rio grande do sul state, brazil. the rootstocks evaluated were: 'swingle' citrumelo (citrus paradisi × poncirus trifoliata), 'caipira' orange (c. sinensis), 'troyer' citrange (c. sinensis × p. trifoliata), 'rangpur' lime (c. limonia), 'volkamer' lemon (c. volkameriana), and 'flying dragon' trifoliata orange (p. trifoliata var. monstrosa). plants budded onto 'flying dragon' had the lowest vegetative development, which indicates the dwarfing characteristics of this rootstock, and had the highest mean production efficiency, despite low yield. plants grafted on 'volkamer' lemon and 'rangpur' lime had the highest alternate bearing. under the experimental conditions evaluated, the most adequate rootstocks for mandarin 'oneco' are 'swingle' citrumelo and 'troyer' citrange, regarding fruit yield and quality.

Abstract: 'michal' tangerine (citrus clementina x c. tangerina) can be a good choice as canopy for early maturing fruit production in rio grande do sul. the limitation is the lack of information about its performance and management. the aim of this research was to evaluate the development, production and fruit quality of 'michal' tangerine grafted on five rootstocks: 'troyer' citrange, 'swingle' citrumelo, 'cravo' lemon, 'sunki' tangerine and 'flying dragon' trifoliate orange, in the depress?o central of rio grande do sul. the following variables were evaluated: plant height; trunk circumference; canopy projection area (apc); produced fruit number and weight (mf); mf/apc relation (ip); juice total soluble solids (sst) and total titrable acidity (att); fruit size and juice content. 'swingle' citrumelo provided good vigor, yield, ip, sst and att for 'michal', while 'cravo' lemon induced good vigor, yield, ip and fruit size. both are good recommendations as rootstock for orchards of 'michal'.

Abstract: soils are a result of the interaction between forming factors and processes in the different landscapes of the earth′s land surfaces. long-term processes change landscapes and associated soil profiles. these changes result from gradual or catastrophic processes of eolian, tectonic and climatic or even human impact, and are generally irreversible, destroying the associated soils. nevertheless, in particular situations soils may remain preserved in a specific area of the ancient landscape, embedded in sedimentary and volcanic sequences, resulting in the so-called paleosols. paleosols are a source of relevant information for a variety of purposes and are particularly valuable in providing evidence for reconstructing past terrestrial ecosystems and environments, mainly in the case of rare or nonexistent fossils; for the characterization of ancient atmospheres and paleoclimate, stratigraphic correlations, as indicator of old relief surfaces, of mineral concentrations; pedogenetic paleoprocesses and sedimentary processes, and as indicator of continental drift in geoarchaeology. in brazil, studies of paleosols are still rare and relatively recent, beginning in the 1970s, in contrast to the united states of america and europe, where such studies are quite advanced and widely reported. this review discusses relevant concepts in paleopedology, with the purpose of arousing some interest, mainly among the pedologic scientific community of brazil, where little research work on this subject is available yet.
