Abstract: the intake and total apparent digestibility of dry matter (dm), organic matter (om), crude protein (cp), ether extract (ee), total carbohydrates (cho), neutral detergent fiber (ndf) and non-fiber carbohydrates (nfc); the total digestible nutrients (tdn) intake and the microbial protein production (micp) in diets of steers were determined. the in situ degradability of feeds was also evaluated. five steers averaging 185.4kg live weight (lw) and fistulated in the rumen and esophagus were randomly, assigned in a completely randomized experimental design. they were fed on: 1- chopped elephantgrass (ce); 2- tifton-85 bermudagrass haylage (ps); 3- brachiaria decumbens hay (fb); 4- brachiaria decumbens hay plus concentrate at 0.5% lw (fb:c1); and 5- brachiaria decumbens hay plus concentrate at 1.0% lw (fb:c2). tifton-85 bermudagrass haylage provided higher intake of dm (6.0kg/steer/day) and tdn (4.2kg/steer/day) related to other forages, showing that its use is a good alternative for bovine feeding. the addition of concentrate to the brachiaria decumbens hay increased the forage intake, from 2.7kg/steer/day to 3.9kg/steer/day, constituting a strategy for the poor quality forages use. the highest concentrate c2 intake (1.0% lw) increased dm (0.9kg/steer/day) and tdn (1.0kg/steer/day) intake of fb:c2 dietary, relative to fb:c1 dietary.

Abstract: alterations on the levels of crude protein (cp), non-protein nitrogen compounds (nnp), neutral detergent fiber (ndf), acid detergent fiber (adf), lignin (lig), ash, calcium (ca), phosphorus (p), magnesium (mg), potassium (k) and sodium (na) of feeds used for steers, caused by the saliva contamination in the extrusa, were evaluated. five steers, fistulated in the rumen and esophagus were fed five diets, in five experimental periods. the treatments were: chopped elephantgrass (ce), elephantgrass obtained by hand-plucked (ces), brachiaria decumbens obtained by hand-plucked (cbs), tifton-85 bermudagrass haylage (ps), brachiaria decumbens hay (fb1), brachiaria decumbens hay and concentrate at 0.5% lw (fb2), and brachiaria decumbens hay and concentrate at 1.0% lw (fb3). the extrusa cp content was not affected (p>0.05) by saliva contamination. the nnp levels were overestimated (p<0.05) in the extrusa in 135.0%. the ndf levels were underestimated (p<0.05) in 3.4%. the adf and lig contents were overestimated (p<0.05) in extrusa samples, on average 11.0 and 44.0%, respectively. the mineral contamination was significant (p<0.05) for ash, p and na, and the levels were overestimated in 31.2, 116.7 and 3250.0%, respectively. the mg content was underestimated (p<0.05) in 15.4% in the extrusa.

Abstract: objective: to prove the existence of a correlation between central corneal thickness and diabetes. methods: ultrasound pachymetry measurements were made in 1,000 patients. the sample was divided into two groups of patients: 953 of them were non-diabetic patients, and 47 were diabetic patients. results: the average central corneal thickness in diabetic patients was 571.96 ± 26.81 microns with a range between 514 and 626. the average central corneal thickness found in non-diabetic patients was 544.89 ± 35.36 microns with range of 448 to 649. the increase in central corneal thickness found in diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic patients was statistically significant (p<0.001, student ?t? test). conclusions: we found that diabetic patients had an increased central corneal thickness when compared with non-diabetic patients.
Effect of Alcohol-Kolanut Interaction on Brain Metabolism in Wistar Albino Rats

Abstract: Effect of alcohol-kolanut interaction on brain metabolism in wistar albino rats was studied. Total 30 wistar albino rats were divided into 6 groups. Group 1 was the control, while groups through 6 were treated with alcohol (10%v/v), kolanut extracts, caffeine, alcohol and kolanut and alcohol and caffeine respectively. The experiment lasted for 21 days. Glucose oxidase, adenylate deaminase and glutamine synthetase were assayed. The results showed that alcohol-kolanut interaction decreased glucose oxidase, adenylate deaminase and glutamine synthetase in the nervous tissue, resulting in a decreased energy (ATP) production, ionic transport and decreased neuronal processes resulting in induced apoptosis of insulin-stimulated neuronal cells, leading to brain growth retardation, DNA damage and may contribute to neuronal loss.

Abstract: The goal of our research was to estimate the morphological features of respiratory tract condition, which develop under influence of intraoperational infusion of refortan and perftoran in oncological patients. It was used the material from 24 patients, died in early postoperative period after pneumonectomy for the reason of lung cancer. During intraoperational infusion therapy in 12 died patients refortan in dosage 5 ml/kg has been used, in other 12 cases perftoran in dosage 3 ml/kg has been used. Morphological analyze was performed with the help of electron microscopy, morphometrical and standard statistical methods. In cases with perftoran use it was observed both damages of aerohematic barrier structures and increased emission of osmiophilic substance by alveolocytes into the alveolar cavity. The last phenomenon has been estimated by us as a compensatory reaction directed on maintenance of respiratory function. In patients with refortan treatment changes in respiratory tract condition were realized in complex of ‘dystrophic’ and destructive processes with less compensatory reaction.

Abstract: The condition of the central heamodynamic at patients with lung cancers with different level of the ventilating respiratory insufficiency in the early postoperative period after application of 3 and 1,5 ml/kg of perftoran and after traditional refortan (5 ml/kg) infusion-transfusion therapy was determined. It was proved that perftoran is much more effective than pefortan. The restoration of the normodynamic type of heamodynamic after infusion of perftoran (1,5 ml/kg) to patients with the an initial level of the ventilating respiratory insufficiency of I and II degree is observed during 1st postoperative week. The restoration of the normodynamic type of heamodynamic at to patients with the initial level of the ventilating respiratory insufficiency of III degree in postoperative period is reached by using perftoran in a dose 3 ml/kg.
Effects of Rates and Split Application of Compound NPK Fertilizer on the Growth and Yield of Three Amaranthus Species in Nigeria Guinea Savanna

Abstract: Field trials were conducted at two sites in Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru-Zaria, Nigeria, to determine the effect of five rates (0, 125, 2501, 2502 and 500 kg ha-1) of compound fertilizer (NPK 27:13:13) on the growth (root and shoot dry weight) and grain yield of three Amaranthus species. The Amaranthus species include: A. hybridus, A. spinosus and A. hybridus var. cruentus. The plants were sampled weekly between 4 and 7 Weeks After Planting (WAP) and the second dose of the fertilizer (for 125 and 2502 kg ha-1) was applied at 5 WAP. The best growth in the Amaranthus species resulted from 500 kg ha-1 NPK treatment at 4 and 5 WAP and from 2502 kg ha-1 NPK treatment at 6 and 7 WAP. The 2501 kg ha-1 NPK application also produced slightly higher values in growth parameters than 125 kg ha-1 at 4 and 5 WAP, but this situation was reversed at 6 and 7 WAP. The overall data showed that, 2502 kg ha-1 NPK treatment produced higher shoot growth and grain yield than the other treatments. Amaranthus hybridus had the highest shoot growth and total dry weight ha-1 than the other species. Amaranthus hybridus var. cruentus also produced the highest total grain weight per hectare than the other species. This study showed that, the split in contrast to sole application of NPK fertilizer rates can be of greater economic benefit in Amaranthus production.
Efficacy and Suitability of Lectin from Mucuna sloanei Seeds Extracts as a Cell Receptor Signal Inducer

Abstract: The efficacy and suitability of lectin from mucuna sloanei seeds extracts as a cell receptor signal inducer was tested by its agglutinating ability in human and various blood cells such as goat, cow and chicken. The results showed that the isolated lectin from mucuna sloanei seeds extracts agglutinated human ABO, goat and chicken red blood cells at minimal concentration, 11.5 mg mL 1, but did not agglutinate those of cow. It was also found that the physicochemical properties of the lectin did not affect agglutination by variation of the pH of the medium or affected by temperature. This suggests that the mucuna sloanei plant could be considered a good molecular marker for the study of blood group substances.
