Arquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia , 2001,
Abstract: Avaliaram-se as altera es do líquido sinovial do joelho de 19 c es submetidos à desmotomia unilateral do cruzado cranial, baseado no modelo experimental de Pond & Nuki, colhido e analisado aos 30 dias de pós-operatório.
Scientia Agricola , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-90161998000300003
Abstract: a field study on the competion and on the dynamics of occupation of nodulation sites by naturalized and seed inoculated strains of bradyrhizobium japonicum was conducted on a dark red latosol. the experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, with eight replications of the following treatments: a) control without inoculation; b) control without inoculation, with nitrogen fertilizer; c) inoculation with about 107 rhizobia/g (8g/kg of seed); d) inoculation with about 1010 rhizobia/g (8g/kg of seed). the inoculant was prepared with the strains sms-314 (= semia-587) and sms-463 (=semia-5019 = 29w), officially recommended for inoculant production. the identification of the strains which formed nodules was made in samples collected at 10, 42 and 70 days after seed germination. the grains were harvested to evaluate production and nitrogen content. sorological typification was made with antiserum prepared from antigens constituted by b. japonicum strains semia-587, semia-5019 and semia-5052 (=usda-6), using the immunodot method. the characterization of the strains in nodules revealed a small increase (6,2 to 8,7%) in the occurrence of nodules formed by the recommended strains for the three sampling dates. there was an expressive participation of the strain 5052 (serogroup usda-6) in the formation of the nodules. it was also observed that the naturalized strains may contribute differently to the formation of the nodules during the cycle, depending on the time of sampling.
Sleep in infants with congenital heart disease
Ykeda, Daisy Satomi;Lorenzi-Filho, Geraldo;Lopes, Antonio A. B.;Alves, Rosana S.C.;
Clinics , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1807-59322009001200011
Abstract: objectives: to investigate hypoxia and sleep disordered breathing in infants with congenital heart disease. methods: prospective study. in-hospital full polysomnography was performed on 14 infants with congenital heart disease, age 7 ±1 months, and in 7 normal infants, age 10 ±2 months. congenital heart disease infants were classified as acyanotic (n=7) or cyanotic (n=7). results: nutritional status, assessed by the gomez classification and expressed as % weight for age, was 70 ±7, 59 ±11 and 94 ±16 in the acyanotic, cyanotic congenital heart disease and control infants, respectively (p<0.001). the respiratory disturbance index (ahi, events per hour) was [median (25-75%)]: 2.5 (1.0-3.4), 2.4 (1.5-3.1) and 0.7 (0.7-0.9) in acyanotic, cyanotic chd infants and controls, respectively (p=0.013). almost all congenital heart disease infants (11 out of 14) and only one control infant had an ahi >1 event/hour. the minimum oxygen saturation was 79% (74-82), 73% (57-74) and 90% (90-91) in the acyanotic, cyanotic congenital heart disease infants and controls, respectively (p <0.001). the arousal index (events/hour) was similar among the three groups at 8.4 ±2.4, 10.3 ±8.7 and 6.5 ±3, respectively (p=0.451). conclusions: infants with congenital heart disease frequently present with sleep-disordered breathing associated with oxygen desaturations but not arousals. therefore, sleep may represent a significant burden to infants with congenital heart disease.
Vegetable fibers as multifunctional materials
Amico, S.C.;
Matéria (Rio de Janeiro) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-70762010000200037
Abstract: concerns related to the ever-growing use of raw-materials from non-renewable sources by modern society is driving the interest of the academic and scientific sectors for a new concept of material, which takes into account not only mechanical performance, cost and availability, but also environmentally-related issues, such as biodegradability, renewability and energy use, along with the promotion of social and economical development of the economically-challenged segment of the population. vegetable fibers have been used in many home-made objects, such as ropes and artcraft, for perhaps as long as humanity exists. however, these fibers present a combination of interesting properties which enables their use in a wide variety of sectors. this invited article will review the work recently carried out by the author in collaboration with various researchers from ufrgs, ufpr and ucs, and will be divided into three case studies, focusing on the use of vegetable fibers for oil sorption, as infiltration (flow) medium and as reinforcement for polymer composites, promoting their use in more demanding and rewarding applications.

Medicine : Science or Art?
S.C. Panda
Mens Sana Monographs , 2006,
Abstract: Debate over the status of medicine as an Art or Science continues. The aim of this paper is to discuss the meaning of Art and Science in terms of medicine, and to find out to what extent they have their roots in the field of medical practice. What is analysed is whether medicine is an "art based on science"; or, the "art of medicine" has lost its sheen (what with the rapid advancements of science in course of time, which has made present day medicine more sophisticated). What is also analysed is whether the "science of medicine" is a pure one, or merely applied science; or the element of science in it is full of uncertainty, simply because what is accepted as "scientific" today is discarded by medical practitioners tomorrow in the light of newer evidence. The paper also briefly touches upon how, in the field of present medical education, the introduction of medical humanities or humanistic education has the potential to swing the pendulum of medicine more towards the lost "art of medicine". The paper concludes by saying that the art and science of medicine are complementary. For successful practice, a doctor has to be an artist armed with basic scientific knowledge in medicine.
