Transdermal drug delivery treatment for overactive bladder
Dmochowski, Roger R.;Starkman, Jonathan S.;Davila, G. Willy;
International braz j urol , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1677-55382006000500003
Abstract: overactive bladder is commonly treated with oral anticholinergic drugs such as oxybutynin chloride. although oral anticholinergic agents have been effective in controlling urinary urgency and incontinence, adverse events, particularly dry mouth, often cause patients to discontinue oral therapy and to endure incontinence. oxybutynin can be delivered transcutaneously, maintaining the efficacy of oral oxybutynin while significantly minimizing side effects (e.g., dry mouth) that may complicate therapy. by avoiding hepatic and gastrointestinal metabolism of oxybutynin, less n-desethyloxybutynin (n-deo) is produced and this compound is deemed to be responsible for anticholinergic side effects such as dry mouth. this novel oxybutynin formulation offers patients with oab and urge urinary incontinence a well-tolerated option for managing the symptoms of overactive bladder.
Isoflavones in processed soybean products from Ecuador
Genovese, Maria Inés;Davila, Jorge;Lajolo, Franco M.;
Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132006000600020
Abstract: soy products produced in ecuador, with a local developed and cultivated soybean variety (iniap 306), were analysed for isoflavone content and profile. the products presented high total isoflavone contents, varying from 53 to 106 mg/100 g (wet basis, expressed as aglycones), the lowest content being for okara and the highest for the low fat soybean flour obtained by extrusion cooking of the seeds at the field moisture. soy nuts showed the same content of isoflavones than the seeds, but with lower amounts of malonylglycosides and higher of the deesterified b-glycosides. the malonylglycosides were the predominant form of the isoflavones in the flours, and the b-glycosides in soymilk and textured soy protein. genistein derivatives were the compounds present in the highest proportions in all the products analysed.
Bovine trypanosomosis due to Trypanosoma vivax in the German Bush province, Bolivia

Abstract: trypanosoma vivax is a hemoparasite found throughout the tsetse belt in africa. it has, however, spread to other parts of africa, central america, south america, the west indies and mauritius. this paper report in the first time the occurence of the t. vivax in the german bush province, bolivia. t. vivax was identified in 45% of 80 cattle examined by microhematocrit test. the clinical signs observed were fever, anemia, abortion, progressive weakness, substantial weight loss in relative short time, and progressive emaciation and lymphonode enlargement. the results of this study suggets that the accelerate spreading of t. vivax could represent a serious impact to the economy of the region

Annales Geophysicae (ANGEO) , 2011,
Abstract: In order to analize the influence of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) on the coronal streamer belt, we made 3-D reconstructions of the electron density in the corona at heliospheric distances from 1.5 to 4 R⊙ for periods before and after a CME occured. The reconstructions were performed using a tomography technique. We studied two CME cases: (i) a slow CME on 1 June 2008; (ii) two fast CMEs on 31 December 2007 and 2 January 2008. For the first case of slow CME, it was found: (i) the potential magnetic field configuration in the CME initiation region before the CME does not agree with the coronal density structure while after the CME the agreement between the field and density is much better. This could be manifistation of that that the field was non-potential before the CME and after the CME the field relaxes towards a more potential state. (ii) It was shown that the dimming caused by the slow CME is not due to rotation of the corona and a line-of-sight (LOS) effect but a streamer blow out effect took place.

Administration of interferon-g to pregnant rats reverses the depressed adjuvant-induced arthritis of their chronically Trypanosoma cruzi-infected offspring

Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research , 1999,
Abstract: We demonstrated that administration of interferon gamma (IFN-g) to the inbred "l" strain of pregnant rats conferred partial resistance on their offspring to challenge with Trypanosoma cruzi. We now examine if this intervention also modifies the reportedly immunodepressed cellular responses which occur during chronic infection. Offspring were born to mothers undergoing one of the following procedures during gestation: subcutaneous injections of recombinant rat IFN-g, 50,000 IU/rat, five times/week for 3 weeks, which was started on the day of mating (IFN-Mo); infection with 106 trypomastigotes of T. cruzi at 7, 14, and 21 days after mating plus IFN-g treatment as given to the former group (TcIFN-Mo); the same protocol except that physiological saline was injected instead of IFN-g (Tc-Mo); injection of physiological saline only (control-Mo). All offspring groups (N = 8-10/group) were infected at weaning and were assessed 90 days later for their adjuvant-induced arthritic response or levels of major T cell subsets in spleen and lymph nodes. TcIFN-Mo and IFN-Mo offspring showed a reestablished arthritic response, which remained within the range seen in controls. Immunolabeling studies on parallel groups of 90-day-infected offspring showed that the inverse CD4/CD8 cell ratio that is usually seen in lymphoid organs from these chronically infected rats (median 0.61) appeared to have recovered in the TcIFN-Mo and IFN-Mo groups (median 1.66 and 1.78, respectively) and was not different from uninfected controls (1.96). These studies indicate that early stimulation with IFN-g is able to reverse the immunosuppressive state that is usually present during the chronic period of the experimental infection.
A study of structural properties on profiles HMMs

Computer Science , 2007,
Abstract: Motivation: Profile hidden Markov Models (pHMMs) are a popular and very useful tool in the detection of the remote homologue protein families. Unfortunately, their performance is not always satisfactory when proteins are in the 'twilight zone'. We present HMMER-STRUCT, a model construction algorithm and tool that tries to improve pHMM performance by using structural information while training pHMMs. As a first step, HMMER-STRUCT constructs a set of pHMMs. Each pHMM is constructed by weighting each residue in an aligned protein according to a specific structural property of the residue. Properties used were primary, secondary and tertiary structures, accessibility and packing. HMMER-STRUCT then prioritizes the results by voting. Results: We used the SCOP database to perform our experiments. Throughout, we apply leave-one-family-out cross-validation over protein superfamilies. First, we used the MAMMOTH-mult structural aligner to align the training set proteins. Then, we performed two sets of experiments. In a first experiment, we compared structure weighted models against standard pHMMs and against each other. In a second experiment, we compared the voting model against individual pHMMs. We compare method performance through ROC curves and through Precision/Recall curves, and assess significance through the paired two tailed t-test. Our results show significant performance improvements of all structurally weighted models over default HMMER, and a significant improvement in sensitivity of the combined models over both the original model and the structurally weighted models.

Generación Net: Visiones para su Educación
Sandra Davila
Revista Orbis , 2006,
Abstract: This study discusses the changes that are demanded in the conception and culture of the learning, focuses the attention on the effect that the new digital environments have cause on the person, the education and the society. The main reflection is over the digital culture that characterizes to the Net generation (people that had from zero to 20 years for the year 1999) and their requirements of knowing or knowledge and of how to learn that knowledge today and always. This research was carried out a bibliographical and documental revision. The information makes us meditate about the change of the traditional transmission learning to the interactive learning defendant in the digital environments; they involve a new culture of educational system, of teaching and learning, where this responsible the own individual, the family and the society. This will contribute with the understanding, acceptance, adaptation, use, development and life in an interconnected world, digital and communicated globally.
