Effect of flunixin meglumine alone and in combination on haemodynamics during bovine endotoxic shock and after treatment  [PDF]

Abstract: To investigate the effect of Flunixin meglumine- a NSAID; alone and in combination with hypertonic saline on endotoxemic buffalo calves, two groups of five apparently healthy male buffalo calves aged be-tween 6-8 months were subjected to I.V. infusion of E.coli endotoxin at the rate of 5μg/kg BW per hour for 3 hours. A highly significant (P < 0.01) fall in mean systolic,diastolic, pulse, mean arterial pressure (M.A.P), central venous pressure (C.V.P) and haemo-globin was observed till the end of endotoxin infusion while respiratory rate was significantly elevated along with a non-significant alteration in rectal tem-perature and hematocrit during the infusion of en-dotoxin. Immediately at the end of endotoxin infusion, flunixin meglumine at the rate of 1.1 mg/kg B.W was infused i.v. in group-I animals and group-II animals were infused with hypertonic saline solution (H.S.S.) at the rate of 4 ml/Kg BW as one time infusion fol-lowed by flunixin meglumine at the rate of 1.1 mg/kg B.W which resulted in increase of various parameters either to normal or very close to normal value while the rectal temperature and haematocrit decreased non-significantly throughout the observation period of 7 hours. No improvement in Hb and respiration was observed consequent to FM administration. Both treatments successfully raised systolic, diastolic, pulse pressure, C.V.P & M.A.P to normal pre-infusion val-ues. From the results of the present investigation, it can be concluded that i.v. infusion of FM alone and in combination with hypertonic saline solution in en-dotoxemic buffalo calves effectively restores the various hemodynamic parameters close to normal pre-infusion values and it can be used as immediate resuscitation measure to provide the clinician valu-able time to plan further long term treatment.
The morphology of oxygen greenline dayglow emission

Abstract: In this study, the morphology of the oxygen greenline dayglow emission is presented. The volume emission rate profiles are obtained by using Solomon's glow model. The glow model is updated in terms of recent cross sections, reaction rate coefficients and quantum yield of greenline emission. Throughout most of the thermosphere the modelled and observed emission rates are in reasonably good agreement. In the region between 98 and 120 km, the modelled emission rates are substantially higher (about a factor of 1.7) than the observed emission rates. This discrepancy is discussed in terms of scaling of solar fluxes which accounts the variation of solar activity for the day on which calculations are made. The modelled morphology of greenline emission is compared with those cases where WINDII data is available. The modelled and observed morphology is in reasonably good agreement at most of the latitudes above 120 km. In the mesosphere the qualitative nature of morphology is very similar to those of WINDII observation except the modelled emission rates are about a factor of 1.7 higher than the observed emission rates. Groundwater Flow Model for a Tannery Belt in Southern India  [PDF]

Abstract: The objective of this article is to develop a groundwater flow model for a tannery belt using Visual MOD-FLOW Premium 4.4 for analyzing groundwater velocity and its response to various pumping strategies in two stages, viz., steady and transient conditions. The steady state model was calibrated for April 2001, whereas the transient model was employed to forecast groundwater flow under various pumping strategies. The results showed that the total groundwater abstraction was about 80.43% of the groundwater recharge, but 10.25% was used up by evapotranspiration. The groundwater velocity, which is important for contaminant migration, varied from 0.21 to 0.52 m/d in the tannery cluster. The model was more sensitive to recharge from rainfall, hydraulic conductivity and specific yield. Finally, the model showed that the aquifer could sustain a pumping rate of 24892 m3/day without further decline in water level.
Experimental Haematobiochemical Alterations in Broiler Chickens Fed with T-2 Toxin and Co-Infected with IBV  [PDF]

Abstract:

The purpose of this experimental study was to evaluate and record the effects of T-2 toxicity alone and in association with IBV infection on haematobiochemical parameters. A total of 128 one-week-old chicks were divided into four groups of 32 birds each and were treated respectively with T-2 toxin alone, IBV alone, T-2 toxin and co-infected with IBV, and no treatment (control) for a period of 6 weeks. Haematologically, the birds treated with T-2 toxin developed anaemia as indicated by significant decrease in haemoglobin levels, total erythrocyte counts and packed cell volume values; leucopenia, lymphocytopenia heterophilia and thrombocytopenia. The IBV infected birds exhibited lymphocytophilia and heteropoenia; the degrees of severity of leucopenia, lymphocytopenia heterophilia and thrombocytopenia were more pronounced in T-2+IBV groups. The serum biochemistry revealed hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia in all the treated groups consistently. Besides, hypoglobulinemia and increased levels of alanine aminotransferase in T-2+IBV, and increased levels of alkaline phosphatase in toxin group alone were recorded. The changes in biochemical parameters were more in magnitude in the combination treatment group and their severity increased with duration of treatment. It was concluded that T-2 toxin made the birds more susceptible to IBV infection.

Current-Processing Current-Controlled Universal Biquad Filter

Abstract: This paper presents a current-processing current-controlled universal biquad filter. The proposed filter employs only two current controlled current conveyor transconductance amplifiers (CCCCTAs) and two grounded capacitors. The proposed configuration can be used either as a single input three outputs (SITO) or as three inputs single output (TISO) filter. The circuit realizes all five different standard filter functions i.e. low-pass (LP), band-pass (BP), high-pass (HP), band-reject (BR) and all-pass (AP). The circuit enjoys electronic control of quality factor through the single bias current without disturbing pole frequency. Effects of non-idealities are also discussed. The circuit exhibits low active and passive sensitivity figures. The validity of proposed filter is verified through computer simulations using PSPICE.

Abstract: The long-range forecasts (LRF) based on statistical methods for southwest monsoon rainfall over India (ISMR) has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for more than 100 years. Many statistical and dynamical models including the operational models of IMD failed to predict the operational models of IMD failed to predict the deficient monsoon years 2002 and 2004 on the earlier occasions and so had happened for monsoon 2009. In this paper a brief of the recent methods being followed for LRF that is 8-parameter and 10-parameter power regression models used from 2003 to 2006 and new statistical ensemble forecasting system are explained. Then the new three stage procedure is explained. In this the most pertinent predictors are selected from the set of all the potential predictors for April, June and July models. The model equations are developed by using the linear regression and neural network techniques based upon training set of the 43 years of data from 1958 to 2000. The skill of the models is evaluated based upon the validation set of 11 years of data from 2001 to 2011, which has shown the high skill on the validation data set. It can be inferred that these models have the potential to provide a prediction of ISMR, which would significantly improve the operational forecast.
HIV-1 infection in a patient of acute lymphocytic leukaemia missed by HIV-spot and HIV-scan rapid tests

Abstract: A case of HIV-1 infection, presumably acquired through unsafe blood transfusion in an acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) patient, is reported here in whom the two rapid HIV antibody detection kits (HIV-spot and HIV-Scan) failed to diagnose the infection while the sample was strongly positive in microwell ELISA (detect- HIV) on the same day and was confirmed by western blot assay (NEW LAV BLOT-1). However, repeat sample after 15 days was found positive in all the tests. Though the rapid tests are preferred over microwell ELISA because of ease of performance and rapid availability of results, this report confirms low sensitivity of the two rapid tests. This suboptimal sensitivity, particularly in cases of early seroconversion, therefore, must be borne in mind for screening the blood and organ donors under strategy-I.

Abstract: De Broglie and Bohm formulated a causal quantum mechanics with a phase space density whose integral over momentum reproduces the position probability density of usual statistical quantum theory. We propose a causal quantum theory with a joint probability distribution such that the separate probability distributions for position and momentum agree with usual quantum theory. Unlike the Wigner distribution the suggested distribution is positive definite and obeys the Liouville condition.

Abstract: In the present study the effectiveness of intravenous atropine sulphate which blocks the peripheral muscarinic receptors at the heart and retrobulbar xylocaine hydrochloride which blocks the conduction at ciliary ganglion on the afferent limb of OCR was studied during strabismus surgery. The study was conducted on fifty three patients of either sex having squint of more than ten years duration. The patients were randomly allocated into four groups. No preanaesthetic medication with atropine or retrobulbar block with xylocaine was given in control group of patients. In the second group, only preanaesthetic medication with atropine was given; while in the third group only retrobulbar injection of xylocaine was given five minutes before operation. In the last group both atropine as preanaesthetic medication and xylocaine as retrobulbar block were given. The electrocardiographic recordings were taken before and throughout the operative procedure. It was interesting to note that in the group where atropine and xylocaine were used none of the patients exhibited activation of OCR. Results have been discussed.
