Social inequalities, labor, and health
Gomez, Carlos M.;Carvalho, Snia Maria T. M. de;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1993, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1993000400010
Abstract: this article presents a brief analysis of the social inequalities expressed in the relationship between health and labor. it focuses on the brazilian context. it begins by approaching the conceptions present in the lines of investigation and intervention in this field of health. it considers an entire range of thinking, from the eminently biological and individual level to an understanding of the relationship between labor and health as a reflection of essentially social processes. the confrontation between conceptual advances, proposals for intervention, and the reality of health for brazilian workers is the parameter for analyzing the activity of state institutions, companies, and workers' organizations. based on the current situation outlined in this study, perspectives are identified for urgent and indispensable changes.
Bullying nas Escolas: Comportamentos e Percep??es
Matos,Margarida Gaspar de; Gon?alves,Sónia M. Pedroso;
Psicologia, Saúde & Doen?as , 2009,
Abstract: the present study was intended to investigate bullying behaviours among public school students in portugal. it specifically aimed to analyse the connection between different types of bullying behaviour (as simultaneously provoked and provoking) and some behavioural predictor variables (alcohol/drug use and weapon carrying) and cognitive/perception variables (perceived life satisfaction and perception of school security). the data was collected from the portuguese hbsc (health behaviour in school aged children) database as regards 2002. the (representative) sample is composed of 6131 adolescents in primary and secondary education, namely in 6th, 8th and 10th grades (m = 14 years, sd = 1.85). each had to answer a questionnaire on a series of behaviours, beliefs and attitudes as far as health is concerned. the pupils feel themselves provoked and say that they provoke others by different forms. the results point out that the more pupils perceive school to be unsafe and the more unsatisfied they are with their lives, the more they claim to be victims of bullying and aggressors. the same pattern holds true for weapon carrying and alcohol and drug use. it is important to underline that different types of bullying share the same predictors; however, their specificity and singularity should be carefully considered for intervention purposes. bullying in school is a worldwide problem; therefore, it is a serious issue one must be concerned about. the findings of this study are expected to raise the awareness of students, school teachers, parents and carers about this problem. moreover, with this work we expect the bullying phenomenon to start being considered within a complex dynamics of causality that urges to be addressed in an integrated way.
Diet of invertebrates sampled in leaf-bags incubated in a tropical headwater stream
Carvalho, Emerson M. de;Uieda, Virgínia S.;
Zoologia (Curitiba) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-46702009000400014
Abstract: the diet of macroinvertebrates sampled in leaf-bags incubated in a tropical stream was analyzed on a spatial scale (one forested and one deforested area) and on a temporal scale (dry and rainy seasons). the macroinvertebrates were mostly represented by detritivores specialized in fine detritus (69%), followed by generalist detritivores (10% with a diet based on fine and coarse detritus), carnivores (10%), omnivores (8%), and one detritivore genera specialized on coarse detritus (3%). the detritivores exhibited a broad spatial and temporal distribution and were represented mainly by ephemeroptera, trichoptera and diptera. phylloicus sp. (trichoptera) consumed mostly coarse detritus (cpom) and can be classified as the unique specialist shredder in this stream. carnivores were represented by anacroneuria sp. (plecoptera), hetaerina sp. and heteragrion sp. (two odonata). omnivory was observed for anacroneuria sp. and smicridea sp. (trichoptera), which evidently varied spatially and temporally in the proportion of the food consumed. the high diversity and the wide distribution of the taxa that used organic matter as food resource demonstrated the great importance of this food item to the macroinvertebrates community in this tropical stream.

Abstract: This study was conducted to verify if the processing and storage of brown flaxseed whole flour result in loss of func-tional properties, such as reduced linolenic acid content, increased lipid peroxidation and sensory changes. The flours were obtained from seeds dried by heat treatment in oven at 150?C, for 15 minutes and subsequent grinding to obtain flour with a particle size of 20 mesh. Meal samples, with and without synthetic antioxidants (BHA and BHT combined, at 100 ppm each), were stored for a thirty-day period, under similar conditions to those used commercially. The linolenic acid content was quantified by gas chromatography. Lipid peroxidation was analyzed by thiobarbituric acid reactive substance assay. Color and flavor were evaluated by sensory tests. The linolenic acid content and lipid peroxidation did not significantly change after processing or during storage. Fluctuations in color and flavor occurred during storage, but at the end of 30 days, only the heat treatment presented negative effect (p < 0.05) on the parameter color. Heat treatment and thirty-day storage period do not change the stability of n-3 fatty acid in brown flaxseed whole flour.
