A Institui??o total como agência de produ??o de subjetividade na sociedade disciplinar

Abstract: goffman's insights about foucault' s analyses can provide a considerable achievement about the subjectivity production processes knowledge in the contemporary society and, mainly at total institutions context, where they are so present. we consider that goffman's institutional analyses is between the macro (molar) and micro spheres of the phenomenon, that happen in closed institutions. he analyzes the non-discoursive practices, and subtlety articulates them, as the daily, apparently insignificant and bizarre "details" from institutional context makes us to realize the intra-institutional relations of microphysics plan, dipping into different strategies in which power itself branches, circulates, dominates and produces knowledges and subjects. we might say that goffman has already introduced the idea of power as a dynamical relation of strategies always achieved at all parts and places. foucault, reveals us how possible are disciplinary institutions and their reasons for emerging. they both are outstanding references to the institutional analyses.

Abstract: we studied the hypothesis of psychological culture proposed by castel, 1987, by seeking to understand the current transformations in the social field and its occurrence in the areas of mental health (psychiatry, psychoanalysis, psychology). the emergence of a new psychological cluster devoted to developing and improving the potential of the human being would aim towards the infinite programming of the human being, in the transition from a disciplinary society to one of control. with this perspective, psychology as a profession would be overcoming treatment and prevention, being redirected towards creating a relational sociability: clinical philosophy could be considered a therapeutic mode for normal people, and enneagram and neuro-linguistic programming as psychotherapeutic systems seeking to guide the human being towards global self-development. we decoded their strategic function, while they were situated in the broader context of the current form of risk management in the administration of problematic populations.

Abstract: we sought to execute a psychosocial analysis of a theological catholic seminary where live 50 seminarians in boarding system, at the final stage of formation to priesthood; once ordained, they will be settled in relevant positions that comprise in the coordination of large parish communities. applying a theoretical tool of institutional analysis, we mapped institutional subjectivityoperators from the pedagogical device in the seminary. we show data related to participative observation obtained in research field. besides the operators present in the official and institutional discourse, we found out that the seminary contrives in daily practice other procedures, which may be designated as totalitarian and disciplinary, producing a priest with clerical profile.

Abstract: in this reserch we did an institutional analyses, which aims is to examine the catholic ecclesiastical formation practices by means of institutional functioning from a catholic seminary and the register of the ecclesiastical knowledge, producer of a specific subjectivity pattern (future priests). by observing the everyday of that establishment, the semi-structured interviews with institution actors, the analyses of official documents of the catholic ministry and relevant literature, we looked for understanding the formation relationship between priests responsible for the formation and seminarians concerning to a privileged and constitutive device of the seminary as an agent producer of subjectivity. thus we come to the conclusion that the seminary focused can be considered as a common disciplinary institution, which maintains the report as its main mechanism and microphysics device (exam tool, surveillance and normal process sanction).

Abstract: we tried to detect the effects of institutionalization on the subjectivity production from a total school enviroment. the study case is the novel "o ateneu", by raul pompéia, which we have analyzed using goffman′s theory related to total institutions. we have described the moral career which the character sérgio develops by going to a boarding school, whereby the vicissitudes were mapped into that environment: period of adaptation, evolutive crises, sexual initiation, problems of brotherly rivalry, etc. total institutions seem to be organized from a particular way and works autonomously. we could only understand the social problems and the effects of subjectivity produced by total institutions, using the studies of power relations underlying those milieus. the absent time that the individual is enclosed as an inmate can place deep marks into his/her subjectivity and turn into an appropriate case of study in itself.

Abstract: in this article we will present a literature case related to boarding school through which we exemplify and discuss some aspects of violence and subjectivity in the total institution. we make use of goffman’s analyses about the total institution and some psychoanalytic hypotheses on the aggressiveness concerning the reading of “the young t?rless”, by robert musil. the total institutions seem to be old-fashioned but continue to exist: minors discipline institutes, almshouses, orphanages, convents, prisons, army headquarters, mentally disturbed institutions, catholic seminaries, etc. our research aims to unveil the way those institutions function and explain their effects on the subjectivity production of those who took part on it. we concluded that there are more than one simple analogy in the parallel we can establish between the educational goals of the boarding school and the corrective-therapeutic objectives of the psychiatric hospital and prison as well.

Abstract: a study about total institution was developed. we have searched into the novel ?o ateneu?, by raul pompéia, which are the subjectivity disciplinary producer agencies in the institution milieu. it is an institutional analysis taking as a research field a case of literature, ruled by goffman′s and foucault′s works. goffman demonstrated which the agencies are, how they work and indicated the production of total institutions. foucault provided a source of understanding of the subjectivity production process into the contemporary society, and, specifically, into the total institution milieu. goffman analyzed the non-discursive practices, articulating them subtly, and revealing that the bizarre and apparently insignificant ?details? of the quotidian institution speak by themselves. it was possible to perceive the microphysics plan of institutional relations, dipping into the different strategies where power spreads itself, circulates, dominates and produces knowledge and subjects.

Abstract: Neste artigo, apresentamos um caso da literatura relativo ao internato escolar por meio do qual exemplificamos e discutimos alguns aspectos da violência e subjetividade na institui o total. Utilizamos as análises de Goffman sobre as institui es totais e algumas hipóteses psicanalíticas a respeito da agressividade para a leitura de ?O Jovem T rless?, de Robert Musil. Institui es totais parecem ultrapassadas, mas elas persistem na atualidade: FEBENS, asilos, orfanatos, conventos, pris es, quartéis, manic mios, seminários para forma o de padres, etc. Nossa pesquisa visa ao desvelamento do modo de funcionamento dessas institui es e a explicita o de seus efeitos na produ o da subjetividade daqueles que delas participam. Concluímos que no paralelo que podemos estabelecer entre os fins educativos do internato escolar e os objetivos terapêutico-correcionais do hospital psiquiátrico e da pris o, existe mais do que uma simples analogia.

Abstract: Neste artigo, estamos desenvolvendo um estudo relativo às institui es totais. Pesquisamos no romance ?O Ateneu? de Raul Pompéia quais s o os dispositivos disciplinares produtores de subjetividade no contexto institucional. Trata-se de uma análise institucional tomando como campo de pesquisa um caso da literatura, pautada pelos referenciais de Goffman e de Foucault. Goffman diz o que s o e como funcionam e indica o que produzem as institui es totais. Foucault, por sua vez, nos revela como s o possíveis as institui es disciplinares e quais as raz es de sua emergência. A leitura de Goffman a partir das análises de Foucault pode nos proporcionar um enriquecimento fecundo na compreens o dos processos de produ o de subjetividade na sociedade contemporanea e, de modo específico, no contexto das institui es totais. Goffman analisa as práticas n o-discursivas, ele as articula com grande sutileza, fazendo falar os ?detalhes? mais pitorescos e aparentemente insignificantes do cotidiano institucional: percebemos ent o o plano microfísico das rela es intra-institucionais, mergulhando nas diferentes estratégias nas quais o poder se ramifica, circula, domina e produz saberes e sujeitos.
A Wavelet-Based Method to Measure Stock Market Development  [PDF]

In this paper, we introduce a novel algorithm, based on the wavelet transform, to measure stock market development. This algorithm is applied to the return series of fourteen worldwide market indices from 1996 to 2005. We find that a comparison of the return series in terms of the quantity of fractional Gaussian noise (fGn), for different values of Hurst exponent (H), facilitates the classification of stock markets according to their degree of development. We also observe that the simple classification of stock markets into “emerging” or “developing” and “mature” or “developed” is no longer sufficient. However, stock markets can be grouped into three categories that we named emerging, intermediate and mature.
