Torrano, Sabrina Koehler;Veiga, Verene Beatriz;Goldmeier, Sílvia;Azzolin, Karina;
Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692011000400006
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate knowledge of patients before outpatient diagnostic cardiac catheterization after viewing an explanatory digital video disc, in a cardiology reference hospital. this cross-sectional study was carried out with patients undergoing their first cardiac catheterization and was performed from may to june 2009 in the hemodynamic sector. an instrument was used with questions (12) regarding the patients' understanding of the procedure. the intervention was a five-minute video prepared by the researchers. the sample was composed of 94 patients, divided into an intervention group (45) and a control group (49), with a mean age of 55±9 years and predominantly male. the patients of the ig had a higher rate of correct answers (74.6±17.1) compared to the cg (31.6±18.8), p=.000. the results demonstrated the efficacy of the presentation of a guidance video for patients undergoing a hemodynamic procedure.
Literacy, Ethnicity and Style  [PDF]
Maria Sílvia Cintra
Advances in Anthropology (AA) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/aa.2013.34A002

I present the result of a two-year research project developed at the “Instituto de Estudos de Linguagem” (IEL/Unicamp, Brazil) and also of action research I have been organizing since 2006 when I started to work as a professor at the “Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos”, in Brazil. Relying on recent developments in New Literacy Studies, I explore the concept of the continuum illiterate-literate and argue that it implies elements of transformation, as well as conservation. I also argue that three intersecting continua must be considered together: the continua oral-written, rural-urban and restricted-full literacy, always taking into consideration ethnicity as a variable (Cohen, 1974). Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Brazil, I show how elements of restricted literacy (Goody, 1968) are presented on the threshold of the twenty first century; how they entertain relation with the rural to urban migration and with a marked contrast between different ethnicities; and in what sense this fact may be visible in the everyday use of language and in the style inherent in it.

Nheengatu Language and Its Role in the Tactics of Construction of Indigenous Identity  [PDF]
Maria Sílvia Cintra
Advances in Anthropology (AA) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/aa.2018.84012
Abstract: Nheengatu is one of the co-official languages of São Gabriel da Cachoeira in the Amazon region (AM/Brazil). About 8000 people in the Upper Rio Negro region speak it, and there exists a contemporary movement for its revitalization in the state of Pará (PA/Brazil). Based upon field research in both these regions, this paper bears reflections on the inter-relations existing between language and identity including references in the areas of Applied Linguistics, Culture Semiotics and Anthropology. I propose a discussion on Nheengatu language, which is often considered in a dysphoric way, i.e., as if it had been imposed on the natives, resulting only from the colonizers’ strategies. I propose we can instead envisage it from the perspective concerning the tactics constructed by the aboriginals in order to preserve and reconquer their identity, i.e., from the point of view of a Poetics of Relation within a complex, contradictory and hybrid linguistic approach.
Bases conceptuales del enfoque histórico-cultural para la comprensión del lenguaje
Orrú,Sílvia Ester;
Estudios pedagógicos (Valdivia) , 2012, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-07052012000200021
Abstract: the following article, as a result of our phd thesis, intends to present the conceptual basis of vigotsky's cultural-historical approach for the comprehension of language, proper to the human species. to understand the individual as a social and cultural being in a developmental history, that goes from interpersonal to intrapersonal, and language being the mediator of all his/her relations. likewise, to highlight the contributions of this approach for the education of people with special needs. to stress that this person is a social individual that develops through social, cultural and historical relations by the mediation of another individual and the existing signs in this mediation, the language being the main sign. we can conclude that, from the cultural-historical approach, a leap is expected in the development of the individual with special needs in the personal relations context, in the teacher's enabling and engaging attitudes and the mediating action of signs.
Histeria e psiquiatria no Brasil da Primeira República
Nunes, Sílvia Alexim;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702010000600006
Abstract: the article problematizes brazilian psychiatric thought on hysteria in the early decades of the twentieth century, a time when a biopolicy of population management was lending impetus to the growth of social medicine. this notion is situated within the context of the nineteenth-century debate on hysteria that took place in major european centers and served as the main reference for brazil's fledgling field of psychiatry. the debate found expression in brazilian psychiatric discourse as part of the era's project for medical reform and prevention in brazil. the work of brazilian neurologist ant?nio austregésilo (1876-1960) within this project is also addressed, since he played a fundamental role in dismantling hysteria as a diagnostic category in psychiatry, a process that continued through the entire old republic.

Respostas brasileiras à violência e novas media??es: o caso do Grupo Cultural AfroReggae e a experiência do projeto Juventude e Polícia
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232006000500019
Abstract: this article points out some aspects of the brazilian's response to the urban violence, focusing both official policies of public security and civil society's actions. identifies a lack on the national policy of public security, indicates successful governmental experiences carried out on some states and counties, and concentrates on the police's actions. analyzing the responses of the civil society, points out the experience of the campaign for disarmament and the role of the media. the paper shows the rising of groups of young people living in the favelas that became organized around cultural experiences that, in multiple aspects, characterize them as "new mediators" in the society. those groups talk about violence and try to build new stereotypes that disassociate them from the criminal type. the article describes, in particular, the cases of the grupo cultural afroreggae, from rio de janeiro, and the pilotexperience experienced with minas gerais state military police, called project youth and police. the grupo afroreggae is typically a "new mediator" and the initiative to carry out a work with the police shows new perspectives in the traditional low profile participation of the civil organizations related to public security and projects of cooperation with the police.
