Blindness is a serious complication that can occur after facial trauma and may represent the loss of one of the most useful senses in the human relationship with the world—the sight. This study aims to review the pathophysiology of blindness related to facial trauma in order to identify the mechanisms by which it develops and to recognize the signs and symptoms required to establish proper diagnosis and treatment. Blindness following facial trauma may occur due to mechanisms that involve injury to the eyeball, optic nerve and eyelids. The leading causes of blindness resulting from facial trauma, and which may be altered by medical interference, are related to retrobulbar hemorrhage and traumatic optic neuropathy, which require extremely rapid diagnosis and can be accomplished with the resources available in most trauma-based emergency services. The authors conclude that loss of vision tends to be irreversible in direct eyeball and optic nerve lesions, but can be prevented in retrobulbar hemorrhage and traumatic optic neuropathy. Eyeball and, especially, sight accuracy evaluation should be included in the initial care of trauma patients, so that the lesions that might lead to loss of vision are diagnosed and treated early.

Abstract: goldenhar syndrome is a well-known condition featuring the following triad of anomalies: ocular abnormalities, microtia and vertebral anomalies. this syndrome involves structures arising from the first and second branchial arches. craniofacial anomalies, including mandibular, zygomatic and/or maxillary hypoplasias are found in 50% of patients with goldenhar syndrome. patients with this syndrome may present unilateral or bilateral underdevelopment of the mandible. several treatments for the correction of the dento-facial deformity have been described, among them distraction osteogenesis is one that shows promising results. distraction osteogenesis is the process of bone formation that occurs during slow separation of the segments of bone after an osteotomy and it has been used to alleviate facial asymmetry. mandibular distraction osteogenesis has been applied for many years, but long-term reports present controversial results. the purpose of the case report is to describe the immediate and long-term effects of distraction osteogenesis used to treat mandible asymmetry in a 5-year-old boy with goldenhar syndrome.

Abstract: purpose: osteosarcoma is a malignant bone neoplasm with aggressive clinical evolution which is usually diagnosed in late stages of the disease, when primary tumor reaches significant dimensions. in many cases, an aggressive surgical treatment, which includes major bone resection and is sometimes associated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, is required for better control of local recurrence and metastasis in such lesions. case description: this paper reports an early-diagnosed case of osteosarcoma in the left side of the mandible and an accurate evaluation of the tumor involvement by means of cone beam computerized tomography. conclusion: the early diagnosis of osteosarcoma is an uncommon condition that has good influence both on the treatment and prognosis of such tumor. this early diagnosis and an accurate evaluation of the tumor involvement were determining factors for conservative, curative surgical procedure with minimum sequelae. the pericementary space should be especially observed, since its thickness is a much more common feature in osteosarcomas. studies that allow for identifying osteosarcomas in earlier stages should be conducted in order to enable longer survival and better quality of life.

Abstract: one subadult male specimen of a reintroduced mountain lion was monitored using the radio telemetry technique. the monitoring lasted 110 days, being randomly distributed. data of the monitoring through radiotelemetry suggested that the home range of this specimen was of approximately 26km2. this sets as the smallest home range described for this species. however, the importance of this basic monitoring should be emphasized, since information of the behavior of a large feline reintroduced in its natural habitat after a period in captivity is incipient.
Efeito do KNO3 nos teores de macronutrientes na matéria seca total de porta-enxertos cítricos produzidos em bandejas
Bragantia , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87052000000100014
Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of dosages and frequency of potassium nitrate (kno3) application on macronutrients contents of two citrus rootstocks. seeds of rangpur lime (citrus limonia osbeck) and cleopatra mandarin (citrus reshni hort. ex tanaka) were germinated in speedlings flats, containing 128 pyramidal cells holding about 75 cm3 of vermiculite and pinus rind substrate. three frequencies of application (1, 2 and 3 times per week) of four dosages of kno3 (1,5; 3; 4,5 and 6 g.l-1) plus a non-fertilization control for each rootstock, were tested. increasing the dosages and the frequencies of kno3 application resulted in higher n and lower p, k, ca, mg and s concentration in plants dry matter at 120 days after sowing.

Abstract: control of citrus sudden death (csd) has been only achieved by inarching affected trees in the field with tolerant rootstocks such as the 'swingle' citrumelo. therefore, the use of nursery trees inarched before planting appears as an interesting strategy for establishing new citrus groves where the csd has not been yet detected, with the advantage of reducing irrigation needs of trees grafted on 'swingle'. this research was carried out with the objective to evaluate growth and nutrition status of non-bearing 'valencia' sweet oranges grafted on multiple and single rootstocks. an experimental grove was planted at 7,0 m x 4,0 m in cordeirópolis, sp, in october 2005 under a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates. five treatments were tested in order to compare the performance of trees on single rootstocks of (1) 'rangpur' lime and (2) ''swingle' citrumelo, double rootstock with inarch of 'rangpur' lime in the trunk of (3) 'swingle' rootstock or of (4) the canopy and (5) quadruple rootstock (two double rootstocks). trunk diameters of rootstocks and canopy were evaluated, as well as the number and length of twigs in different canopy quadrants, plant height, canopy diameter and volume at 8 and 14 months after planting in the field. nutrient concentrations were also evaluated on leaf samples collected in the south and north parts of the canopy after 14 months. double rootstock trees of valencia sweet oranges presented more vigorous growth compared to others on single 'swingle' citrumelo rootstocks, being such difference more evident definite during the high water deficit period of the study. the use of an additional rootstock changed the nutritional status of valencia sweet orange trees, that presented higher concentration of p, k, cu and zn in the leaves than 'swingle' or 'rangpur' lime single rootstock plants.

Abstract: this research studied the effect of pyroligneous acid (pa) presence in the micronutrient solution sprayed on leaves on the foliar nutrient content of 'rangpur lime' (citrus limonia osbeck0) seedlings, under screen house. an experiment in a randomized complete block design with six treatments and four replicates was set up. treatments consisted of leaf spraying with the following solutions: t0 = water; t1 = micronutrients solution without pa; t2 = micronutrients solution+ pa (1 cm3 dm-3); t3 = micronutrients solution + pa (2 cm3 dm-3); t4 = micronutrients solution + pa (5 cm3 dm-3); t5 = micronutrients solution + pa (10 cm3 dm-3). the micronutrient solutions were prepared by using sulphates of cu, fe, mn and zn (250 mg dm-3 of the elements), and boric acid (42.5 mg dm-3 of b). the experiment was set up on 0.280 dm3 conical containers, in growing media with no addition of micronutrients. the solutions were sprayed once, at 140 days after planting (dap), when the plants were about 20 cm high. at the end of the experiment (160 dap), dry mass of plants and concentrations of nutrients of aerial part and root system were evaluated. the presence of pyroligneous acid in the spraying solution did not affect b, fe and zn concentration in the leaves. however, increased cu and mn concentration for treatments containing pa at 10 cm3 dm-3 in the micronutrients solution. it was also observed that plants sprayed with solutions of pa (1 to 10 cm3 dm-3) + micronutrients showed lower fe and higher ca concentration on the root system.

Abstract: the effect of finely grounded charcoal and pyroligneous acid (pa) in mixture with a commercial growing media and pa sprayed on leaves on growth of rangpur lime (citrus limonia osbeck) seedlings under screen house was studied. treatments consisted in a combination of 3 levels of charcoal (0, 100 and 200 cm3 dm-3) mixture on the commercial growing media, 2 rates of pa mixtured (0 and 20 cm3 dm-3) to a growing media (240 cm3 per dm3 of growing media), and 3 rates of pa (0, 5 and 10 cm3 dm-3) sprayed on the leaves, with 4 replications. the experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design, and analyzed as a factorial 3 x 2 x 3. growth of seedlings was evaluated at 150 and 180 days after planting. the presence of charcoal at 100 cm3 dm-3 in the media did not influence on growth of seedlings. however, the mixture with 200 cm3 dm-3 of charcoal reduced production of total dry mass and high of the plants. the addition of pa (solution 20 cm3 dm-3) to the media reduced plant growth, and sprayed (solutions 5 and 10 cm3 dm-3) on the leaves reduced seedlings diameter.
