Abstract: Human T lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is endemic in the southern part of Japan. Infection of the virus can cause adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), while most infected individuals remain in a carrier state for a long period of time. Although rare cases of carriers, like ATL patients, who developed opportunistic infections, have been reported, hematological changes of carriers who are prone to opportunistic infections have not been well defined. Here, we present a case of an HTLV-1 carrier who developed Mycobacterium intracellulare infection and Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PcP) simultaneously. Flow cytometric analysis of bone marrow cells revealed an aberrant compositional change similar to that in ATL patients. This suggests the presence of a pre-ATL state prior to the development of ATL, which is notable in terms of underlying cellular immunodeficiency.
Effect of Silver-Loaded Zeolite on the Susceptibility of Escherichia Coli Against Antibiotics  [PDF]

Abstract: We investigated the effect of silver-loaded zeolite (Ag-Z) on antibacterial activity of some antibiotics against Es-cherichia coli against antibiotics. We treated the bacterial suspension of E. coli by Ag-Z to be the level which the decrease of viable cell count was not observed. Susceptibility test of E. coli treated with Ag-Z was carried out against four antibiotics with different mode of action. Apparent increase in susceptibility was found in the case of rifampicin, not in others. The result suggests that application of Ag-Z to ward environment might give a good outcome at the treatment with rifampicin and at the treatment for pathogenic microbe spread through the air, such as tubercle bacilli.

Abstract: Introduction of silver into some inorganic material causes the resulting mixture to have antibacterial activity. Here, we investigated the role of silver in the bactericidal activity of silver-loaded zeolite, by measuring the effects of silver-loaded zeolite on Escherichia coli cell viability under conditions in which the oxidation state of the silver was controlled electrochemically. Bactericidal activity was observed when the sweeping voltage between 0 and 0.7 V was applied to the silver electrode. When nitrogen gas bubbling or reactive oxygen scavengers were added to the experimental system, bactericidal activity decreased. These results indicated that the redox cycle, Ag0 <—> Ag+, caused the dissolved oxygen to form reactive oxygen species.

Abstract: We studied chemical garden in order to investigate precipitation behavior for osmotic pressure under microwave irradiation. The salt concentration and microwave irradiation power were varied. Microwave irradiation induced release of osmotic pressure and change of precipitation pattern because polar molecules vibrate and rotate in an electromagnetic field. For example, the width of precipitation increased and the number of rapture of the membrane decreased due to the release of osmotic pressure by the irradiation. Accordingly, microwave irradiation accelerated the diffusion of ionic molecules through the membrane.
MANDARIN SECONDARY PREDICATES

Abstract: In the first part, I provide some data of secondary predicates in English and Mandarin on consequence-depictives (SUBJ-oriented) and resultatives (OBJ-oriented), which adopt an intransitive verb/adjective for their secondary predicate. In the second half, I present an account of the linking issue on “resultative” compound predicates in Mandarin Chinese, building on the LFG/LMT work of Her (2007), who assumed that the argument structures of each predicate merge to give a composite structure, which determines whether a resultative sentence is semantically causative or not, and from which the arguments link to grammatical functions. I argue here that the facts require a more articulated semantics, for unlike Her’s analysis, the determination of causativity and the linking of the arguments of the two predicates is fully an issue of semantics; specifically, I argue that there are two types of secondary predicates in terms of their semantics, namely those with internally- and externally-caused changes of state (see Levin and Rappaport Hovav: 1995, McKoon and Macfarland: 2000), which are respectively “indirect-causative” and “direct-causative”; causativity should be categorised into three types, non-causative, indirect-causative, and direct causative. I further argue that the argument undergoing internally-caused change always links to Actor and that the one undergoing externally-caused change (a truly “affected” argument) always links to Undergoer.
From conduction to convection of thermally relativistic fluids between two parallel walls under gravitational force

Abstract: We discuss the thermal conduction and convection of thermally relativistic fluids between two parallel walls under the gravitational force, both theoretically and numerically. In the theoretical discussion, we assume that the Lorentz contraction is ignored and spacetime is flat. For understanding of the thermal conduction and convection of thermally relativistic fluids between two parallel walls under the gravitational force, we solve the relativistic Boltzmann equation using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. Numerical results indicate that strongly nonequilibrium states are formed in vicinities of two walls, which do not allow us to discuss the transition of the thermal conduction to the thermal convection of thermally relativistic fluids under the gravitational force in the framework of the relativistic Navier-Stokes-Fourier equation, when the flow-field is under the transition regime between the rarefied and continuum regimes, whereas such strongly nonequilibrium states are not formed in vicinities of two walls under the nonrelativistic limit.

Abstract: A study of CP violation in $B\to J/\psi K^*(K_S^0\pi^0)$ decays by time dependent angular analysis is discussed. Status of time independent analyses for other $B\to VV$ decays is also reported. The data used for the analyses are taken with the Belle detector at KEK.
Nonlocal effect on the magnetic penetration depth in multigapped superconductors

Abstract: A brief discussion is given on the nonlocal effect in multigapped superconductivity. It is pointed out that the effective magnetic penetration depth at lower external fields may be reduced by the nonlocal effect associated with the presence of small energy gap. A crude estimation of the effect in double gap system is provided and compared with the data obtained by muSR in MgB2.
Numerical method toward fast and accurate calculation of dilute quantum gas using Uehling-Uhlenbeck model equation

Abstract: We consider a fast and accurate numerical method to calculate the dilute quantum gas. To attain our aim, the Uehing-Uhlenbeck (U-U) model equation is calculated using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. The proposed algorithm in the DSMC method enables us to obtain the accurate thermalization using a small number of sample particles and calculate the dilute quantum gas dynamics in practical time. Finally, we apply the proposed numerical method to the calculation of the viscosity coefficient on the basis of Green-Kubo expression.
Open books supporting overtwisted contact structures and Stallings twist

Abstract: We study open books (or open book decompositions) of a closed oriented 3-manifold which support overtwisted contact structures. We focus on a simple closed curve along which one can perform Stallings twist, called ``twisting loop''. We show that the existence of a twisting loop on the fiber surface of an open book is equivalent up to positive stabilization to the existence of an overtwisted disk in the contact manifold supported by the open book. We also show a criterion for overtwistedness using a certain arc properly embedded in the fiber surface, which is an extension of Goodman's one.
