Revista Brasileira de Cineantropometria e Desempenho Humano , 2001,
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to verify, by means of socioeconomic and cultural indicators, the profile of development and physical growth of students aged from 10 to 14, both native and non-native to Florianópolis, Santa Catarina Island, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and to investigate whether natives differ from non-natives. The casual comparative method (Gay, 1987) was employed and supplemented with the person-context paradigm (Bronfenbrenner, 1991). The study enrolled 365 students of both sexes: 265 of them natives and 100 non-natives. Physical growth was assessed in terms of body weight and height, with the NCHS curves as reference standard. Data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, the chi-square test, Student’s t test of Student and Pearson’s correlation coef. cient. The results show that locals have greater body weight than non-locals and that both groups exhibit lower weight than the NCHS standard values. Values for height were also greatest on the NCHS scale, followed by natives and then non-natives. It was observed that the macrosystem of Santa Catarina Island, analyzed in the light of socio-economic and cultural indicators, is homogeneous for the students that were analyzed here and is therefore able to have the same influence on their development profiles. We may add that this influence on the students is positive.

Abstract: the pressures tempted by the exigencies from the competitive sport lead many athletes to exceed the limits of their physical and psychological capacity, causing the manifestation of overtraining syndrome. the purpose of this review article is to discuss, through the original material, the validation process of the profile of mood states-adolescents (poms-a) for use with adults(1). this instrument was developed to serve as a brief measure of mood states among adolescents and adult populations, and had already demonstrated, in recent researches, effectiveness in the diagnosis of these altered states by intensive training. the poms-a was administered to adult athletes prior to competition, adult student athletes, adolescent athletes prior to competition, and adolescent students. a subset of adult student athletes was used to test the criterion validity of the poms-a. confirmatory factor analysis provided support for the factorial validity of 24-item, six-factor model using both independent and multi-sample analyses. relationships between poms-a scores and previously validated measures, that were consistent with theoretical predictions, supported the criterion validity. evidences were found in support of the psychometric integrity of the poms-a when extended from adolescent to adult populations. it is suggested that the poms-a is an appropriate tool with which mood profiles will be tested, besides the brevity of the test facilitates data collection in research environments. subsequent studies aim the validation and applicability of the instrument brums (current name of the poms-a) in detection of overtraining syndrome in brazilian athletes, for what already exists authorization by the authors terry, lane and fogarty(1).

Abstract: objectives identifying brazilian adolescents' leisure habits, physical activity level and physical fitness related to health. material and methods 222 male and 152 female adolescents with ages ranging from 15 to 18 participated in this study. the instruments used were the inventaire d'habitudes du loisir (adapted to portuguese) and a scale of leisure habits. physical activity level was measured by the international physical activity questionnaire (short version) and physical fitness was assessed through a battery of questions proposed by the brazilian sports' project. the mann-whitney u and anova tests were used for frequency-data analysis and inferential statistics. statistical significance was set at the <0.05 level. results the results revealed no linear relationship between adolescents' sedentary leisure habits and aptitude level related to health, thereby inferring that both male and female adolescents considered themselves to be physically active. however, a higher predisposition towards active leisure habits was found in male adolescents during their free time leading them to enjoy a better aptitude level related to health. conclusions it was concluded that even adolescents having physically active leisure habits will not necessarily achieve satisfactory results in physical abilities depending on active movement (aerobic fitness and abdominal strength and fitness) and, also, implementing leisure and fitness programmes requires specific activities. independently of gender, adolescents need physical activity.

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the opinions of sports psychologists on the main causes of aggressive attitudes during professional soccer games. Sixteen psychologists from fi rst division teams in Brazil’s Southern region were investigated during the fi rst semester of 2004. They indicated the fi ve most important items in a multiple choice list proposed by the researchers, numbering them in order of importance. The data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively, and, in the opinions of this study’s participants, the most worrying factors were the importance of a game (41 points), provocation by opponents (37), coaches’ attitudes (33), team performance (25) and losing scorelines (23). Results suggest the need for professional teams to take measures internally, with the participation of sports psychologists, and also for external measures to be taken, such as changing certain rules of the game in order to decrease aggressiveness on the soccer field.

Abstract: There are many tests for the evaluation of motor performance or physical fitness that take into account different criteria such as movement forms and patterns, time, distance, and repetitions of each task for the analysis of performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between motor performance and physical fitness scores in children. Fifty children of both genders aged 7 to 8 years (25 boys and 25 girls) participated in this study. The Test of Gross Motor Development – Second Edition (TGMD-2) was used for the evaluation of motor performance. Physical fitness was assessed by three specific tests proposed by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). The results showed statistical significance and weak correlations among some skills such as run, horizontal jump, hop, leap, underhand roll, and medicine ball throw. The equivalent use of both tests may not be adequate since each test has its own peculiarities in terms of assessment criteria.

Abstract: Physical growth and nutritional status are excellent health indicators since they permit the establishment of growth monitoring charts, especially for schoolchildren. The objective of this study was to compare the growth profile and nutritional status of schoolchildren between two samples (1997 and 2009). The data of physical growth and nutritional status obtained for the present sample of 645 schoolchildren (270 boys and 375 girls). The children were classified according to the body mass index (BMI)-for-age reference values of the WHO child growth standards. Although no significant differences in height or body weight were observed between the children studied, these variables tended to increase from the first to the second sample and in the two genders. With respect to the adequacy of BMI in boys, there was an increase in the percentage of children with low BMI-for-age, doubling of the percentage of obese children, and a reduction in the percentage of children with overweight. An increase in the number of subjects with low body weight, overweight and obesity and a decrease in the number of subjects with adequate BMI-for-age were noted among girls. In conclusion, there were no significant changes in the physical growth indicators (weight, height and BMI) over the period comprising the two samples (1997 and 2009). However, height, body weight and the number of subjects with risk of obesity and obesity tended to increase, especially among girls.
