Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/as.2015.63030

This study investigated the protective effects of secondary bacterial metabolites, produced by Pseudomonas sp. (bacterium strain LN), on citrus canker disease caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac 306). The LN bacteria strain was cultured in liquid medium and the supernatant free-cells was treated with methanol (AMF) and ethyl acetate (AEF), respectively, and then the extract was concentrated, filtrated, lyophilized and fractionated by vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC). After VLC, eight fractions were obtained. All fractions’ activity against Xac 306 by agar well diffusion assay and minimum inhibitory concentration but in different concentrationswere tested. Cytotoxicity effects were observed in all fractions in 50 μg·mL-1 concentration. The comet assay demonstrated that the fractions EAF, VLC2 and VLC3 presented no genotoxic effects at tested concentrations. In plants only VLC3 showed significant results (p<0.05), reducing the incidence of citrus canker lesions.

Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132004000300009
Abstract: the stability of orange juice obtained from a small extractor and stored in a polyethylene bottle was assessed under isothermal and non-isothermal storage conditions at 4, 8 and 12oc for 72 hours. ph, titratable acidity and brix did not alter significantly during the 72 hours storage. microbiological analysis showed high initial count for moulds and yeasts that increased in the juice stored for 72h under the non-isothermal conditions with temperature abuse (12oc/4h). date of the sensory evaluation showed a small reduction in product acceptance in this condition. the juice, in the recommended validity period (48h), presented losses of less than 20% of the initial ascorbic acid content regardless of the treatment. however, after this time, the degradation became accentuated reaching, at 72h storage, retentions of 72 to 85%.

Abstract: sand flies from central amazonia and four new records for the amazonas state, brazil. a survey was conducted in may and june 2008 to study the fauna of insects in central amazonia, brazil. as part of the survey, we report here that sixty species of phlebotomine were identified, totaling 13,712 specimens from 13 genera. the collection sites were located at the border between the states of pará and amazonas, comprising three municipalities from the amazonas state (borba, maués, and nhamundá). malaise, cdc and shannon traps were used to collect the insects. most of the sand flies were collected by cdc traps (89.5%), while malaise and shannon traps collected 7% and 3.5%, respectively. the most abundant genera, representing 97.1% of the total sand flies identified were: trichopygomyia barretto, 1962 (47.6%), psathyromyia barretto, 1962 (17.9%), psychodopygus mangabeira, 1941 (17.5%) and trichophoromyia barretto, 1962 (14.3%). the genera with the largest number of species identified were: psychodopygus (14), psathyromyia (10), evandromyia mangabeira, 1941 (7), trichophoromyia (5) and trichopygomyia (5). the most abundant species was trichopygomyia trichopyga (floch & abonnenc, 1945), which represented 29% of the total sand flies identified. here we also report new records for four species in the amazonas state: ps. complexus (mangabeira, 1941), ps. llanosmartinsi fraiha & ward, 1980, ty. pinna (feliciangeli, ramirez-pérez & ramirez, 1989), and th. readyi (ryan, 1986). the results of this study provide new, additional information on the distribution of sand flies in the amazon and increase the number of species in the amazonas state from 127 to 131.
Do genes and environment meet to regulate cerebrospinal fluid dynamics? Relevance for schizophrenia

Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience , 2012, DOI: 10.3389/fncel.2012.00031
Abstract: Schizophrenia is a neurodevelopment disorder in which the interplay of genes and environment contributes to disease onset and establishment. The most consistent pathological feature in schizophrenic patients is an enlargement of the brain ventricles. Yet, so far, no study has related this finding with dysfunction of the choroid plexus (CP), the epithelial cell monolayer located within the brain ventricles that is responsible for the production of most of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Enlarged brain ventricles are already present at the time of disease onset (young adulthood) and, of notice, isolated mild ventriculomegaly detected in utero is associated with subsequent mild neurodevelopmental abnormalities similar to those observed in children at high risk of developing schizophrenia. Here we propose that altered CP/CSF dynamics during neurodevelopment may be considered a risk, causative and/or participating factor for development of schizophrenia.

Abstract: The objective was to study the effect of alginate coating on polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity and colour of ‘Starking’ apple cubes during dehydration with hot air. Apple cubes were dehydrated at 20oC, 35oC, or 40oC, with a parallel airflow. Analysis of PPO activity, colour (L*, a*, b*) and dry matter were performed along the dehydration process at each temperature. All samples presented a peak in relative PPO activity in the beginning of the drying. Exponential models fitted well the experimental data after the peak. Cubes without coating presented lower PPO activity, suggesting lower browning, than coated samples throughout the dehydration process, for all temperatures. Better results for coated samples were obtained with a perpendicular airflow drying at 40oC, after dipping the whole apple in water at 60oC for 10 min. In order to prevent coated samples from browning, drying by perpendicular airflow preceded by a thermal treatment of the whole apple is required.

Análise Psicológica , 2003,
Abstract: the purpose of the present study was to adapt for portugal the physical self-perception profile for children and youth - pspp-cy and the perception importance profile for children and youth - pip-cy (whitehead, 1995). the portuguese version of the instruments (perfil de auto-percep??o corporal para crian?as e jovens - papc-cj) and perfil de importancia percebida para crian?as e jovens - pip-cj) was applied to a sample of 625 students (girls, n = 315; boys, n = 310), aged from 11 to 19 (m = 14.38 and dp = 1.46), belonging to different schools from the algarve. the internal consistency and the validity of the papc-cj have been satisfactorily tested, replying consistently the original structure presented by whitehead (1995). the analysis done has reproduced the hierarchical structure of the model proposed by fox (1990) and by fox and corbin (1989). the instrument has revealed itself to be valid to measure the physical self-perceptions of portuguese youngsters. in what concerns the pip-cj, contrarily to the girl's results, the results obtained with the boys didn't show a differenced factorial structure, which leads us to think that the instrument remains somehow enigmatic, according to what whithead (1995) had concluded. further investigation is needed to confirm the results presented in this study. further work should be done with other groups in order to, firstly, extend the validity of the papc-cj to other portuguese populations and, secondly, to clarify the role of the perceived importance perceptions, especially among male adolescents.

Abstract: background: atorvastatin 80 mg is recommended in patients with coronary artery disease to reduce cardiovascular events, however, there is controversy regarding the pharmacokinetic interactions between high doses of statins and the concomitant use of clopidogrel, since they share the same biotransformation pathway. this study evaluated the effects of the atorvastatin/clopidogrel combination therapy on the pharmacokinetics of statins and on platelet function of patients with stable coronary artery disease receiving chronic statins method: patients were admitted four times (v1 to v4) to a day-clinic. statin was discontinued seven days (d) before the first admission. patients then received atorvastatin 80 mg (d1 to d22) and clopidogrel 75 mg/day (d8 to d29). fasting blood samples were obtained at all time points for lipid measurements, platelet function tests (cone and plate technique), and quantification of atorvastatin plasma levels (liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry) results: the discontinuation of statins for one week changed the lipid profile (p < 0.05 vs. baseline), with an early improvement of all lipid parameters after the administration of atorvastatin 80 mg (p < 0.005; v1 > v2, v3 and v4). platelet adhesion was lower with clopidogrel alone (p = 0.003; v4 < v1, v2 and v3), whereas platelet aggregation values were lower following the atorvastatin/clopidogrel combination therapy or clopidogrel alone when compared to the other time points (p < 0.0001; v3 and v4 < v1 and v2). the use of clopidogrel did not affect atorvastatin serum levels conclusion: high-dose atorvastatin did not affect platelet responses to clopidogrel, however the short-term statin discontinuation worsened the lipid profile and platelet function.

Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2001000200012
Abstract: this study presents the results of an oral health epidemiological survey conducted in 1997, based on who criteria, in the xavánte indigenous community of pimentel barbosa (or eté?itépa), mato grosso state, central brazil. the study included 228 individuals (85% of the population) over two years of age. in about half the sample, the dmf index was less than 2, and in the 12-14-year age bracket it was 3.7. the low frequency of fillings in permanent and deciduous teeth suggests limited access to dental care services. despite the number of sextants with bleeding and tartar, no cases of severe periodontal disease were detected (cpitn). in the community, comparison of the results of this survey with two previous surveys (1962 and 1991) showed a deterioration in oral health conditions over time and alterations in the occlusal pattern (increase in angle class ii and iii). dietary changes due to environmental and socioeconomic alterations resulting from interaction with the surrounding society, along with the lack of preventive programs, are among the causes of this deterioration in oral health among the xavánte.

Santos, Luiz A. de Castro;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702008000100002
Abstract: this essay focuses upon the transnational history of professional nursing. women leaders across the atlantic were behind major associative movements touched by feminist and libertarian ideas. since the 1890s, this crisscrossing of actors and ideas defies any simple labeling of 'national models'. this paper argues against the existence of a 'french model', as an alternative to the ideas and practices proposed by the 'rockefeller nurses' in rio de janeiro during the 1920s. instead, the roots of professionalism at that time could only be sown by the american nurses, who breathed from a truly transnational debate. at that time of intense ideological agitation about doctrines and best practices, the international council of nurses (icn) pointed in the direction of increasing autonomy, associational life, and anti-patriarchal ideologies. this international process, often discontinuous and contradictory, stressed an ethics of caring and stimulated an ethos of professional autonomy among nurses on a global scale.
