Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542009000300012
Abstract: the aim of this study was to determinate the macronutrient content in leaves of coffee seedlings grown in plastic pots. the experiment was carried out at a greenhouse located in the coffee research area at the agronomy department of lavras federal university from may 2003 to january 2004. we used a block design in a sample factorial 6 x 3 with four blocks, where the substrate was treated with six levels of fertilization (50, 75, 100, 125, 150, and 200% of standard fertilization with osmocote for m3 substrate) and the evaluations were performed at three stages of development (sampling times): three, four, and five pairs of leaves. the following characteristics were evaluated: plant height (cm), stem diameter (mm), leaf area (cm2), root dry weight (g), stem dry weight (g), leaf dry weight (g), total dry weight (g), and leaf analysis for the following nutrients: n, p, k, ca, mg, s. the critical ranges obtained for macronutrients were: nitrogen (2.26 to 2.62 dag/kg); phosphorus (0.22 to 0.25 dag/kg); potassium (2.59 to 2.92 dag/kg); calcium (0.69 to 0.76 dag/kg); magnesium (0.11 to 0.12 dag/kg); sulfur (0.15 to 0.24 dag/kg). it was confirmed that the four true pair of leaves were the ideal for leaf sampling aiming at the identification of the mactonutrient contents.

Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2011000200006
Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the consequences of spacing reduction between rows and between plants in the planting row on growth, productivity and bienniality of coffee plants (coffea arábica). the experimental design was a randomized complete block, with three replicates, in a 4x3 factorial arrangement. four distances between rows (2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 m) and three distances between plants in the planting rows (0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 m) were used, which totalized 12 treatments. the productivity and the production per plant were assessed annually between 1994 and 2001, and the growth was evaluated in 2002. the reduction of spacing between rows and between plants in the planting row increases the productivity of coffee plants. the spacing between the rows and plants influences the growth and architecture of the coffee plant.

Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542007000300007
Abstract: the experiment was established in the empresa de pesquisa agropecuária de minas gerais - epamig experiment station, located in the city of machado, south of the minas gerais state, brazil, in the year of 1992, with the objective of evaluating the consequences of the reduction on planting spaces among rows and among plants, upon beans yield and plant phenology (coffea arabica l.). the experimental design used was a 4x 3 factorial with split plot at four distances between planting rows (2,0; 2,5; 3,0 e 3,5 m) and three distances among plants in the row (0,5; 0,75 e 1,0 m), and two different pruning times (one precociously conducted just after the harvest, on july 2002, and the other latter on january 2003), making a total 24 treatments arranged in randomized blocks with three replicates. in july 2002 and january 2003 a drastic pruning was clone and conducing two sprouts per plant. vegetative growth and beans yield were evaluated in august 2004. coffee plant spacing did not affected growth of any of the vegetative components of sprouting, during the evaluated period. all the vegetative characteristics were positively affected by the early pruning procedure, as well as the beans yield of the first harvest after pruning, which also showed to be positively influenced by the adoption of a narrower spacing plant. the coffee plants which were submitted to late prunning, had lancer bean yield in july 2004 as those precociously prunned.

Revista Ciência Agron?mica , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-66902010000300022
Abstract: coffee yield has a great importance to the international market with a 120 million 60-kilogram bags and in brazil it produces 10 million of direct and indirect jobs. water stress is one of the most important factors to the crop yield, and so, the selection of tolerant cultivars is of great importance in the places under water stress. in this work, 15 coffea arabica cultivars were evaluated about the water status and leaf anatomy to indicate the most tolerant cultivars under water stress. the bourbon amarelo and catimor were the most efficient under water stress, because these varieties have thicker cuticle, more palicade parenchyma, bigger central bundle sheath, and higher stomatal density. so, these cultivars can be more potentially more efficient to reduce the transpiratory rate, to improve the photosynthesis and photosynthates translocation under water stress, and these varieties can be more indicated under water stress against the other cultivars.

Abstract: Specialty rices can present differences in some aspects related to grain pericarp color, shape, size, amylose content or aroma. Most of these rice types are related to cultural traditions and ceremonies, and some of them have also different nutritional value. As a specific market, the economic values of these grains are also higher than common milled rice. Santa Catarina State has the ideal conditions to produce specialty rices. The objective of this work was to develop a rice cultivar with special attributes for the well-appreciated risotto. Two rice lines were combined, evaluated and selected during ten years for characteristics related to Italian food. One line was selected and becomes the new rice variety SCS123 Pérola, developed to attend the economically important specialty rices market of Italian food, specifically the risotto. Experimental tests performed with this variety showed that it can be recommended to all rice-producing regions of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Cooking tests showed that the grains are appropriated for risotto.

Abstract: case report of a patient who developed failure of an allogenic living related conjunctival limbal transplantation in the right eye after an episode of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. after a few months, she underwent transplantation of allogenic limbal epithelial stem cells cultivated ex vivo on amniotic membrane (first case in brazil). the patient evolved with total corneal epithelialization and improvement of the visual acuity. three months after the surgery, peripheral superficial neovascularization with worsening of the corneal transparency was observed. the vision remained 0.1 after one year of the transplantation.

Abstract: the objective of this cross-sectional and quantitative study was to identify the prevalence and determinants of exclusive breastfeeding among infants less than six months of age in the city of serrana, sao paulo, brazil in 2009. a validated semi-structured questionnaire was administered to the guardians of the children less than six months of age who attended the second phase of a brazilian vaccination campaign against polio. univariate and multivariate analysis presented in odds ratios and confidence intervals was accomplished. of the total of 275 infant participants, only 29.8% were exclusively breastfed. univariate analysis revealed that mothers who work outside the home without maternity leave, mothers who did not work outside the home, adolescent mothers, and the use of pacifiers have a greater chance of interrupting exclusive breastfeeding. in the multivariate analysis, mothers who work outside the home without maternity leave are three times more likely to wean their children early. results provide suggestions for the redirection and planning of interventions targeting breastfeeding.

Abstract: purpose: to evaluate by impression cytology (ic) the corneal surface of live limbal tissue donor eyes for autograft or allograft limbal stem cell transplantation (lsct). methods: twenty limbal donors were enrolled (17 for autograft lsct and 3 for allograft). impression cytology was performed before transplantation of superior and inferior limbal grafts and after the third postoperative month. results: impression cytology analysis showed sheets of corneal epithelial cells and goblet cell absence beyond the edge of the keratectomy sites in all patients, suggesting that conjunctival invasion towards the center did not occur in any eye. partial conjunctivalization within 2 to 3 clock hours, confirmed by the presence of goblet cells, was limited to the keratectomy site in 10% of the cases. conclusion: a clear central corneal surface was demonstrated in all eyes following surgery leading to the conclusion that limbal donation was a safe procedure in this group of patients. a small percentage of eyes can have donor sites re-epithelized with conjunctival cells at the periphery of the cornea.
