Abstract: turmeric is a species originated from india with a great potential in dye, medicine and food markets. this experiment was carried out at the universidade federal de lavras, brazil, with the objective of evaluating the response of the plant to factors such as time and planting densities, by means of characterizing the phenological stages. the period of vegetative growth was determined at the pre-tillering and tillering stages. the slow growth of the aerial part, in the first stage, was influenced significantly by the time of planting, independently of the treatment used. the tillering stage showed increased biomass accumulation, due to the contribution of the tillers. the period of growth of the rhizomes was greatly influenced by the time of planting. shorter periods of growth were associated with late plantings. the extension of the growth period were 147, 124, 102 and 79 days for the plantings done in every 20th day of october, november, december and january, corresponded to a total plant cycle of 270, 240, 210 and 180 days, respectively. a significant effect of the factor density of planting was only observed during the period of vegetative growth, being short vegetative growth associated to higher plant densities.

Abstract: the objective of the present study was to evaluate growth and production of micropropagated plants (apical meristem culture) compared with plants conventionally multiplied. treatments consisted of two forms of multiplication (meristem culture and conventional plants), four garlic cultivars, five evaluation times (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days after planting) and randomized block design with four replications, in a split-plot scheme. plant height and number of leaves/plant were taken. pseudostalk diameter/bulb ratio was measured after 60 days of planting. after harvest, mean weights of bulbs, total and commercial yields were obtained. the tissue culture plants have increased their cycle about 18 days as compared with conventional ones. shoot growth expressed by plant height and number of leaves/plant and growth of bulb expressed by pseudostalk diameter/bulb ratio of tissue culture plants were superior to conventional plants, and these differences were greater for the cultivars "gigante rox?o" and "gravatá". in the same way, all characteristics related to yield (mean bulb weight, total and commercial yields) of plants multiplied "in vitro" were superior compared with conventional ones. as for tissue culture multiplication, cultivars "gravatá" and "gigante rox?o" were the most productive, while for conventional multiplication the cultivars "gravatá" and "lavínia" presented the highest production.

Abstract: the effect of different calcium sources and levels on production and quality of muskmelon (cucumis melo var. inodorus) fruits, hybrid 'gold mine', stored at room temperature were evaluated. a randomized complete block design was used in a 5x2 factorial scheme, with four replications, consisting of five levels of calcium (0; 2.5; 5.0; 7.5 and 10.0 kg/ha of ca) and two sources [caci2 p.a. (26% ca) and cab2 (8% ca)]. sprays started at anthesis and were directed to the fruits and to the leaves close to the fruits. the chelated calcium (cab2) was more efficient on fruit set, which resulted in a greater number of fruits per plant, and provided greater marketable fruit production, firmness and fruit pulp thickness, when compared to cacl2. at 10 kg/ha of calcium there was higher calcium level in the flesh and skin of fruits and higher total sugar content, but calcium toxicity symptoms were observed. calcium sources and levels did not affect fruit ph and total soluble solids (tss).
