Abstract: silica gel was chemically modified with the aromatic amines p-anisidine, p-phenytidine and p-phenylenediamine, using grafting reactions. the resulting modified silicas were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and n2 adsorption/desorption isotherms. the organic groups were covalently immobilized in a monolayer form. these modified silicas were investigated as adsorbents for pb2+, cu2+, cd2+ and ni2+ in aqueous and ethanol solutions. in a general way, the adsorption capacity values for all adsorbents presented the following sequence: pb2+ >> cu2+ @cd2+ @ ni2+. adsorption studies for all adsorbents, in competitive medium, showed better selectivity for cu2+ and pb2+ in aqueous medium and for pb2+ in ethanol solution. desorption studies were carried out using hcl and hno3 as eluents.

The photoelectric properties of multilayer organic photovoltaic cells (OPV cells) were studied. The active organic layers consisted of a planar heterojunction between a layer of Meso-Tetrakis(4-BromoPhenyl) Zinc(II) Porphyrin (BrPhPZn) as electron donor (ED) and a layer fullerene molecules. The devices were fabricated in a high vacuum by thermal sublimation, a technique that allows multilayer devices realization easily by successive depositions, and it does not require solvents, achieving purer films with reproducible characteristics. Taking into account that the anodic contact, a key factor for cell efficiency, is favored by the inclusion of a thin anodic buffer layer (ABL), the effect on the yield after including one or two (ABL): MoO3 or MoO3-CuI layers was studied. The cell which has the best photovoltaic characteristics has a BrPhPZn (ED) thickness of only 12.5 nm. This small thickness is related with the low conductivity of this organic molecule. On the other hand, including a thin MoO3-CuI bilayer increased, such device’s efficiency in a 200%, with regard to a cell without ABL, getting for one cell ITO/MoO3-CuI/BrPhPZn/C60/Alq3/Al, with a 1.03% yield.

SPECT/CT preoperatorio, una nueva herramienta diagnóstica para localizar adenomas paratiroideos: Presentación de 2 casos clínicos Localization of functioning parathyroid adenomas by SPECT/CT: Report of two cases
Single photon emission computed tomography and computed tomography (SPECT/CT), integrates a gamma camera and a CT scan and is effective for the location of parathyroid adenomas. We report a 55 years old male and a 80 years old female with primary hyperparathyroidism. In both cases the 99mTc-Sestamibi parathyroid scintigraphy detected a functioning nodule whose presence was confirmed with SPECT/CT.

Abstract: citrus sudden death (csd) is a new and destructive disease that affects sweet oranges (citrus sinensis) and some mandarins (c. reticulata) grafted on rangpur lime (c. limonia). its etiology and transmission mechanisms are still unknown, epidemiologic study of the disease was recently initiated. dynamics and structure analysis of foci technique (dsaf) was used to characterize csd dissemination on 166 spatial distribution maps of csd symptomatic trees from 51 blocks of northern s?o paulo state and the southern of triangulo mineiro. according to dsaf, the csd epidemic begins with unitary foci randomly distributed in the block. at an incidence up to 2%, most of the foci were composed by an unique plant. later, the disease progresses more by increasing the number of foci than by increasing the size of the focus. this was indicated by an increase in the number of foci up to 18% of disease incidence and by the reduced number of plants per focus (less than four plants per focus at 20% of incidence). in most cases (71.5%), foci expanded more within-row than across-row. compactness reduction of foci with increase in csd incidence suggests that larger foci are less compact and, thus, that disease dissemination does not occur in a homogenous and continuous way around the first affected tree. the observed patterns are similar to those of diseases caused by an infectious agent, which is transmitted by a vector.

Abstract: A mutant library of the bacterium Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri strain 306 pathotype A (Xac), the causative agent of most aggressive Asiatic type A citrus canker, was screened regarding altered canker symptoms after inoculations into Citrus sinensis and Citrus limonia host leaves. Twenty-six mutants have shown phenotypic virulence changes and have respectively knocked out gene identified by sequencing. In vivo growth curves were obtained for nine mutants to quantify how the mutations could affect pathogen’s adaptability to growth inside and attack host plant infected tissue. Among identified genes in mutated strains, we could find those that until now had not been reported as being involved in Xac adaptation and/or virulence, such as predicted to encode for xylose repressor-like protein (XACΔxylR), Fe-S oxidoredutase (XACΔaslB), helicase IV (XACΔhelD), ubiquinol cytochrome c oxidoreductase iron-sulfur subunit (XACΔpetA), chromosome partitioning protein (XACΔparB) and cell division protein FtsB (XACΔftsB), in addition to genes predicted to encode for hypothetical proteins. The new genes found in this study as being relevant to adaptation and virulence, improve the understanding of Xac fitness during citrus plant attack and canker symptoms development.
