Identification of impact aroma compounds in Eugenia uniflora L. (Brazilian Pitanga) leaf essential oil
Melo, Rosineia M.;Corrêa, Vivian F. S.;Amorim, Ana Carolina L.;Miranda, Ana Luisa P.;Rezende, Claudia M.;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532007000100020
Abstract: the leaf essential oil of eugenia uniflora l. (myrtaceae) was extracted by clevenger apparatus and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (gc-ms). the leaves were collected and immediately extracted for five consecutive days at 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. no variance in the oil yields were observed in the period. furanodiene and its rearrangement product, furanoelemene (or curzerene, 50.2%), b-elemene (5.9%) and a-cadinol (4.7%) were identified as the most abundant compounds. gc-olfatometry (gc-o) associated to aroma extract dilution analysis (aeda) allowed the identification of nine active aroma compounds, where furanodiene (along with furanoelemene, fd 1024), b-elemene (fd 256) and (e,e)-germacrone (fd 256) were characterized as the main impact aroma compounds in the odor of this essential oil. those substances were collected through a sniffing port adapted on the gc allowing to obtain a typical essence of pitanga as indicated by comparative olfatometric analysis.

Abstract: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m+p+o-xylene (btex) and two trimethylbenzenes (btext) were monitored in rio de janeiro downtown area during 2004 and 2005. some criteria pollutants and meteorological parameters were also determined in order to assess the main data correlations. 94 samples were collected, using activated charcoal cartridges, between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. the mean concentrations obtained were: 14.5, 22.8, 9.19, 19.3, 8.5, 10.4 and 12.1 μg m-3 for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m+p-xylene, o-xylene, 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, respectively. these values are similar to mean concentrations obtained in the brazilian cities of porto alegre, volta redonda and s?o paulo, which use the same type of fuel. multivariate analyses showed that individual btext are emitted by the same source and are not well correlated with other primary pollutants. these results may be due to the contribution of evaporative losses of the btext and to the formation of secondary volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere.
Minimalist perspectives for psycholinguistic research
Avances en Psicología Latinoamericana , 2011,
Abstract: a particular approach to the study of psycholinguistic processes is presented, which is based on a minimalist conception of language. a procedural model of language acquisition is sketched, which reconciles infants speech processing and the idea of innately guided learning with a minimalist view of the initial state of language acquisition in an account of the bootstrapping problem. language acquisition is viewed as proceeding with the progressive specification of formal features of the functional categories of the lexicon. the possibility of a minimalist derivation to be incorporated in a sentence production and/or comprehension model is discussed. possible sources of language impairment, as manifested in sli (specific language impairment) syndrome, are considered in the light of this integrative approach. reference is made to experimental work carried out in brazilian portuguese, with some extension to european portuguese and river-plate spanish.
O sistema de farmacovigilancia em Portugal (sua cria??o e desenvolvimento)

Abstract: the safety profile of a drug is not a static concept. it progresses and can change on the basis of scientific data gathered before and after it is marketed. therefore, it is now considered fundamental that all countries have the capacity to continuously monitor the safety of medicines authorized for sale. based on the resulting and appropriate data, this allows them to alter the previously authorized conditions for use of a given drug as a public health safeguard. this paper describes how a pharmacovigilance system is being developed in portugal in the 1990s. the system is being implemented based on our national characteristics and positions within the european union. the article includes some results from the initial implementation of these methods. many similarities allow one to extrapolate some of the procedures from one country to another. when we began we borrowed and adapted extensively from experiences already tested by others.
Cash transfers and the labor market
Cavalcanti, Tiago;Corrêa, Márcio;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402010000200006
Abstract: this paper studies the effects of cash transfers to the poor on the labor market. we build a matching model of the labor market with endogenous job destruction in which agents can be in three states: employed, unemployed, or out of the labor force (home production). workers are heterogenous in their labor market productivity. an idiosyncratic productivity shock arrives at constant instantaneous rate. depending on this shock, workers might want to leave the labor market and workers out of the labor force might decide to look for a job. we introduce cash transfers to all agents with income below some threshold level. our analytical results show: (i) the size of cash transfers has a negative effect on the employment rate, but an ambiguous effect on the unemployment rate; and (ii) the coverage of this welfare program has a positive effect on the employment rate, and an ambiguous effect on the unemployment rate. we also provide some numerical simulations.

Effects of the Orientation of the Mountainside, Altitude and Varieties on the Quality of the Coffee Beverage from the “Matas de Minas” Region, Brazilian Southeast  [PDF]

Abstract: Based upon qualitative parameters experiments, this study aims to investigate how the elements of the environment, where the coffee is produced, contribute to the final quality of the product. For the analyses, it was used approximately one kilogram of coffee cherry samples collected in 14 municipalities previously chosen on the East side of the Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The coffee cherry samples were collected and analyzed for each of the two varieties in four levels of altitude for each exposure side of the mountain in relation to the Sun. The quality of the coffee was evaluated through the analysis of its physical characteristics and sensory analysis, popularly known as \"Test of drink or Cupping\" carried out by three tasters that belonging to the group of Q-Graders, according to the rules of national and international competitions of the Brazilian Association of Special Coffees (BSCA). Were performed analysis by means descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and multivariate analysis, all of them aiming to study the individual sensory characteristics of quality of the coffee beverage from the “Matas de Minas” region. Path coefficient analysis also was carried out for the partition of the phenotypic correlation coefficients into measures of direct and indirect effects, in order to determine the individual sensory characteristics that played a major role in the beverage final score. The results demonstrate that it is not possible to conclusively establish the differences among coffees evaluated with basis on varieties and environmental factors previously cited. It can be concluded that it is not recommended to associate the quality of coffee only to a specific factor whether from the environment or being it a specific of the culture of coffee. However, the cafes that were evaluated had intrinsic quality, which were derived from the specific characteristics of the “Matas de Minas” region where they were grown.
