Accelerated Repair and Reduced Mutagenicity of DNA Damage Induced by Cigarette Smoke in Human Bronchial Cells Transfected with E.coli Formamidopyrimidine DNA Glycosylase

Abstract: Cigarette smoke (CS) is associated to a number of pathologies including lung cancer. Its mutagenic and carcinogenic effects are partially linked to the presence of reactive oxygen species and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) inducing DNA damage. The bacterial DNA repair enzyme formamidopyrimidine DNA glycosylase (FPG) repairs both oxidized bases and different types of bulky DNA adducts. We investigated in vitro whether FPG expression may enhance DNA repair of CS-damaged DNA and counteract the mutagenic effects of CS in human lung cells. NCI-H727 non small cell lung carcinoma cells were transfected with a plasmid vector expressing FPG fused to the Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein (EGFP). Cells expressing the fusion protein EGFP-FPG displayed accelerated repair of adducts and DNA breaks induced by CS condensate. The mutant frequencies induced by low concentrations of CS condensate to the Na+K+-ATPase locus (ouar) were significantly reduced in cells expressing EGFP-FPG. Hence, expression of the bacterial DNA repair protein FPG stably protects human lung cells from the mutagenic effects of CS by improving cells’ capacity to repair damaged DNA.
An Essay on Intra-Industry Trade in Intermediate Goods  [PDF]
Rosanna Pittiglio
Modern Economy (ME) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/me.2014.55045
Abstract:

This paper contributes to the debate on the effects of international fragmentation on two-way trade in several ways. Firstly, it is the first study on determinants of horizontal and vertical intraindustry trade in intermediate goods with regard to Italy. Secondly, it studies if and how country-specific factors affect intra-industry trade in intermediate goods when heterogeneity among sectors is allowed. The topic is very important for its policy implications. As is known, the early literature distinguishing vertical from horizontal intra-industry trade is especially concerned that their determinants are not the same, and that an expansion in two-way trade might have different adjustment implications depending on its nature. In the case of input trade, the same motivation applies (since intermediates are a subset of total goods traded) but to a greater extent. The analysis, on the one hand has produced results that support the theoretical hypotheses, on the other hand has confirmed the relevance of considering intersectoral heterogeneity in analyzing determinants of intra-industry trade in intermediate goods.

T. S. Eliot’s Ekphrastic Poems  [PDF]
Rosanna Rion
Advances in Literary Study (ALS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/als.2014.21007
Abstract:

Poems which have been inspired by paintings or mention a pictorial work can be analysed following a long tradition of studies between painting and poetry. Three of Eliot’s early poems: The Love Song of Saint Sebastian, Mr. Eliot’s Sunday Morning Service and On a Portraitare examples of this kind of ekphrastic exercise. There are different kinds of connections between painting and poetry and Eliot uses the iconological elements for different aims. The painters who interested the poet shared in common the fact that they represent a bridge between past and future, not a moment of perfect execution but one of great creativities.

On the dimension of the minimal vertex cover semigroup ring of an unmixed bipartite graph
Cristina Bertone,Vincenzo Micale
Le Matematiche , 2008,
Abstract: In a paper in 2008, Herzog, Hibi and Ohsugi introduced and studied the semigroup ring associated to the set of minimal vertex covers of an unmixed bipartite graph. In this paper we relate the dimension of this semigroup ring to the rank of the Boolean lattice associated to the graph.

On the Betti numbers of some semigroup rings
Vincenzo Micale,Anda Olteanu
Mathematics , 2011,
Abstract: For any numerical semigroup $S$, there are infinitely many numerical symmetric semigroups $T$ such that $S=\frac{T}{2}$ is their half. We are studying the Betti numbers of the numerical semigroup ring $K[T]$ when $S$ is a 3-generated numerical semigroup or telescopic. We also consider 4-generated symmetric semigroups and the so called 4-irreducible numerical semigroups.

Abstract: For any numerical semigroup S, there are infinitely many numerical symmetric semigroups T such that S = T/2 (see below for the definition of T/2) is their half. We are studying the Betti numbers of the numerical semigroup ring K[T ] when S is a 3-generated numerical semigroup or telescopic. We also consider 4-generated symmetric semigroups and the so called 4-irreducible numerical semigroups.

Valores de uso de marcadores discursivos para explicar la causa y la consecuencia, la finalidad y el modo en una muestra de coloquio juvenil
Rosanna,Boadas;
Opción , 2008,
Abstract: speech of the colloquium is speech subject to a grammar of the expressive intentions of the speakers and the dynamics of the context in which the communicative interaction takes place. according to this perspective, this study seeks to determine the values of use of the syntactic structures that permit explaining cause and consequence, the purpose and the way, in speeches produced by two young students during the course of a semi-structured interview. this study of a descriptive-explanatory type proceeds first to identifying, in the discursive sequences, the indicated structures and then to determining the strategies of their production and organization as performed by the speakers. it is based on the theoretical and methodological elaborations of conversational analysis indicated by a. tusón (1997), a. narbona (1989), and especially on the syntactic strategies or those of construction described by a. briz (2001) and on the functional and pragmatic uses of the studied markers, in agreement with f. matte bon (2000). it concludes that these lexical categories, together with resources belonging to the colloquium itself, such as explanatory redundancy and intensification, have been used efficiently by the speakers to achieve their expressive purposes.
Should women be able to choose caesarean section?
Rosanna Ching
South African Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology , 2006,
Abstract: Caesarean section is one of the commonest operations performed in the UK. The rise in incidence has been partly due to increased importance being placed on the patient's right to choose. This paper, written from a female medical student's viewpoint, looks at whether caesareans should be performed solely because of patient request. The risks and benefits of caesarean sections are reviewed and the balance between patient autonomy and medical paternalism is evaluated. It is argued that the risks of performing a possibly needless operation are important and should not be dismissed, and the conclusion is that caesarean section should be performed only when medically indicated. The majority of young doctors now entering obstetrics in the UK are female, but this does not necessarily mean that there will be a shift in favour of women's rights.
