Abstract:

A major nutritional problem to crops grown in highly weathered Brazilian soils is phosphorus (P) deficiencies linked to their low availability and the capacity of the soils to fix P in insoluble forms. Our studies examined factors that might influence P behavior in soils of the Amazon region. This study was conducted to evaluate the maximum phosphate adsorption capacity (MPAC) of the soils developed from mafic rocks (diabase), their parent materials and other factors resulting in the formation of eutrophic soils having A chernozemic horizon associated with Red Nitosols (Alfisol) and Red Latosols (Oxisol) of the Amazonian environment. The MPAC was determined in triplicates as a function of the remnant P values. The different concentrations used to determine the MPAC allowed maximum adsorption values to be reached for all soils. The Latosol (Oxisol) and Nitosol (Alfisol) soils presented higher phosphate adsorption values that were attributed to the oxidic mineralogy and high clay texture while the Chernosol (Mollisol) soils presented the lowest phosphate adsorption values.

A dinamica do marketing de rede: rela??es sociais e expectativas de um novo estilo de vida

Horizontes Antropológicos , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832010000100007
Abstract: the growth of agents who joined amway, a network marketing company, presents a paradox: at the same time amway recruits those agents - as employees -, it don't provide them with legal rights prescribed in formal contracts and, most of the cases, the company doesn't offer even a monetary return. this research aims to demonstrate how amway is structured by a continuous process which institutes a new cognitive order. the analytical model considers that the collectivity's elementary social bond is possible only when individuals share in their minds a minimal set of parameters about the social order: instituted social conventions. inside amway these instituted social conventions are constantly mobilized through practical and ritual activities which intend to increase and give dynamism to the networks, and thus tend to conduct the collective memory and maintain these social conventions.
Multivariable H2 and H∞ control for a wind energy conversion system: a comparison

Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-58782010000400013
Abstract: the wind energy conversion system (wecs) is a nonlinear system, highly dependent on a stochastic variable characterized by sudden variations, and subjected to cyclicaldisturbances caused by operational phenomena. thus, the quality of a wecs controller is measured by its capacity to deal with unmodeled dynamics, stochastic signals, andperiodic, as well as non-periodic disturbances. since the wecs' objectives can be easily specified in terms of maximum allowable gain in the disturbance-to-output transfer functions, h2 and h∞ methodologies can be good options for designing a wecs stabilizingcontroller, combining specifications such as: disturbance attenuation, asymptotic tracking, bandwidth limitation, robust stability, and trade-off between performance and controleffort. designs for wecs multivariable feedback controllers based on h2 and h∞ methodologies are presented in this paper. the performances of both controllers are computationally simulated, analyzed and compared in order to identify the advantages anddrawbacks of each controller design.

Abstract: a 17 year-old-girl was referred to our department because of facial swelling, trismus and pain. she had had previous drainage of the swelling and was on antibioticotherapy. ludwigs angina was diagnosed; the orthopanthomagraphy showed dental abscess and caries. she had intravenous antibiotherapy and dental extraction with resolution of the condition.

Abstract: a 11 year-old boy was referred to our department with a chief complaint of a painless slow growing mass, localized to the gums. the lesion was highly vascular, easily bleeding, at the level of 2.1. in addition, the patient had poor oral hygiene, presenting exuberant plaque and tartar. we performed an excisional biopsy of the lesion and removed the plaque and tartar; histology con?rmed the clinical diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma

Abstract: a 13-year-old adolescent was referred for an urgent evaluation at our department because of a swelling, slow-growing, and painless, sometimes bleeding lesion of the tongue. he presented a vegetative lesion of the tongue with irregular borders, multiple vesicles of variable size and staining, infiltrating the adjacent tissues and that seemed to extend into the tongue. surgical excision was performed, and histological examina-tion confirmed a cavernous lymphangioma.

Abstract: a two-year-old child was sent to our department by the appearance of multiple vesicles, accompanied by pain and hyperthermia, in the mouth and lips. the clinical diagnosis was a gingival herpetic stomatitis. she was treated symptomatically, with favorable evolution.

Abstract: a one month-old girl was referred to our department due a neoformation of the mandible. the excisional biopsy of the lesion revealed a congenital epulides of the newborn. this is an uncommon lesion, easy to diagnose, as it has a typical appearance and localisation. surgical treatment is the option, namely when it impairs feeding, swallowing or breathing.
