Abstract: butterflies (lepidoptera, papilionoidea and hesperioidea) of the "baixada santista" region, coastal s?o paulo, southeastern brazil. a list with 538 species of butterflies recorded in the baixada santista, s?o paulo ( se brazil) is presented. standard sampling protocols (i.e. with entomological nets) were followed. baited traps were installed for fruit feeding species. data from the literature and entomological collections were also considered in the total estimated species richness. the species richness recorded in the baixada santista region represents about 16% of the brazilian butterfly fauna, and 34% of the known butterfly fauna for the state of s?o paulo. the present list contains an appreciably higher number of species in comparison to other lists from similar biomes farther south, such as blumenau in santa catarina, and maquiné in rio grande do sul.

An illustrated key to male Actinote from Southeastern Brazil (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae)
Francini, Ronaldo Bastos;Penz, Carla M.;
Biota Neotropica , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-06032006000100013
Abstract: in certain times of the year, actinote butterflies can be vastly abundant in southeastern brazil, thus representing conspicuous denizens of our fauna. their wing coloration allows for the recognition of five major patterns, which probably resulted from mimicry. furthermore, examination of series of field-collected and reared specimens clearly demonstrates a high intra-specific variation in wing color pattern. in concert, inter-specific resemblance (mimicry) and intra-specific variation make it difficult to discriminate actinote species from each other. this key aims at providing a tool for identification of male actinote. to that effect, we provide diagnostic characters and illustrations of wings and male genitalia for 22 species. we hope that the clear identification of these species will lead to the discovery of species yet unrecognized in southeastern brazil.
Seasonal Extrafloral Nectar Production by Laguncularia racemosa (L.) C.F. Gaertn (Combretaceae) in Southeast Brazil

International Journal of Botany , 2011,
Abstract: The aim of this study was to quantify the nectar production of extrafloral nectaries by Laguncularia racemosa leaves. Extrafloral nectaries are nectar-secreting glands not directly related with pollination and which attract diverse nectarivorous arthropods but most especially ants. During two years we investigated if the extrafloral nectaries of Laguncularia racemosa were morphologically variable and if the production of nectar was seasonal. Branches with five pairs of leaves of L. racemosa each were collected out in the mangrove of River Guaratuba (Bertioga, SP, Brazil; 23°45'12"S; 45°53'45"W) in five samplings from May 2008 to April 2010. Samples received only diffuse light and were analyzed 24 h after collection, when the presence or not of liquid in all five pairs of leaves per branch was recorded. The extrafloral nectaries near apical leaves produced nectar more frequently compared to other leaf pairs. There was a sharp decrease in the frequency of extrafloral nectar production from autumn to summer. The visitation of ants was recorded and could explain the observed seasonality of nectar production by Extrafloral nectaries because the fall is the period of flight dispersal of several herbivorous insects. This work demonstrated clearly that Extrafloral nectaries in L. racemosa are functional nectar-secreting structures that are able to attract nectarivorous insects such as ants and flies.

Abstract: the present article consists of an exploratory investigation that took place in the cemetery of the city of porto alegre in a field trip for the course epidemiology and society of the post-graduation program in collective health at universidade luterana do brasil in the first term of 1999. the visit to the cemetery aimed at observing differences related to death in porto alegre cemitério da santa casa da misericórdia. the analyzed categories were children's deaths, violent deaths, epidemiological characteristics - gender, professional activity, education - and financial status, including anonymous deaths. the objective of the investigation is to integrate historical, artistic and literary aspects to better understand health and disease among the population and expand the sanitary profile we have of it.
Tendência de mortalidade por cancer de colo de útero para o Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil, 1980-2005

Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2009000800005
Abstract: this study evaluated the cervical cancer mortality trend from 1980 to 2005 in the state of minas gerais, brazil. the demographic and mortality data available on the website of the statistics department of the unified national health system (datasus) were used to estimate the mortality rate for uterine cervical cancer and unspecified uterine cancer for the state during the period. linear regression was performed, with mortality rate as the response variable and year of diagnosis as the explanatory variable. mortality varied from 9.18/100,000 in 1980 to 5.70/100,000 in 2005. the log-linear model showed a 1.93% annual reduction in mortality due to cervical cancer for the state during the study period (p = 0.000), and this drop was observed mainly in cases classified as unspecified uterine cancer. the downward mortality trend observed for this disease suggests improved access to timely and adequate diagnosis and treatment in minas gerais in recent years, although coverage of screening is still unsatisfactory.
Mortality due to cancer of the uterine cervix in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, 1980-2005: period and cohort analysis
Alves, Christiane Maria Meurer;Bastos, Ronaldo Rocha;Guerra, Maximiliano Ribeiro;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2010000700024
Abstract: this study identifies the period and cohort effects on the decreasing mortality trend of cancer of the uterine cervix and of the uterus, part unspecified, in the state of minas gerais, brazil, during the period 1980-2005. 11,243 cases were included. a non-parametric method was used to calculate z statistics and p-values. the cohorts were assessed one by one and also in blocks of three, so as to allow for a larger number of comparisons to be made. greater than expected mortality reduction was observed for the cohort blocks of women born in 1913-1920; 1927-1936; 1937-1946; 1949-1956; 1963-1970; and 1969-1976. for the 1901-1908 and 1921-1928 cohort blocks a smaller than expected mortality decrease was found. as for period effect, we found a greater than expected reduction for the 2000-2001 period, in comparison with the previous one. the study suggests the existence of a significant cohort effect on mortality due to cancer of the uterine cervix in the study population, and such results have been placed in their social and political contexts.

As categorias analisadas foram: óbitos infantis; óbitos violentos; características epidemiológicas - gênero, profiss o, cultura; pobreza/riqueza, incluindo mortes an nimas. O objetivo do estudo é integrar aspectos históricos, artísticos e literários no entendimento da saúde/doen a das popula es, tornando o perfil sanitário das mesmas mais integral e abrangente.
