Abstract: the ideal proportion of macronutrients in weight loss diets is currently under debate. there are evidences indicating that a higher proportion of protein during weight loss diets enhances the loss of body weight and fat mass, and reduces the loss of lean body mass. nevertheless, the responsible mechanisms for these effects have not yet been fully elucidated. furthermore, studies that evaluated the possible side effects of these diets on the renal function and on the nutritional state of calcium have shown inconclusive results. therefore, this article has the objective to convey recent information about the effects of high-protein diets in the regulation of the body weight and body composition, besides its involved mechanisms, and its effects on the renal function and on the calcium nutritional status.

Abstract: nowadays obesity can be considered a global epidemic illness, though it shows a long-term treatment failure index higher than 90%. research work on leptin, which is a peptide mainly produced by fat cells, lead to a breakthrough for medical obesity treatment. it has been found out that leptin - through control of its concentration, could be a marker of the energetic status and depot of fat amounts in cells as well. this occurs by acting in a feedback circuit which function is to maintain body weight stable - this independently of food intake variations. hence, if this circuit presents failures, as i.e. low response to high leptin concentration, patients may become obese. this phenomenon is very common and lead to the "leptin resistance thesis". the aim of this review is to explain leptin's physiological function as an hormone that "prevents" weight loss because physiological repercussion of leptin concentration reduction seems to be more intense than when it increases - at least in human beings. therefore what has been called - by definition - leptin resistance - seems to be just the result of a concentration which causes a limited physiological action.
Myocardial contractility is preserved early but reduced late after ovariectomy in young female rats

Abstract: Young female Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups (n = 9-15): sham operated (Sham), ovariectomized (Ovx) and Ovx treated with estradiol (1 mg/kg, i.m., once a week) (Ovx+E2). After 7, 15, 30 and 60 days post Ovx, left ventricle papillary muscle was mounted for isometric tension recordings. The inotropic response to Ca2+ (0.62 to 3.75 mM) and isoproterenol (Iso 10-8 to 10-2 M) and contractility changes in response to rate changes (0.25 to 3 Hz) were assessed. Protein expression of SR Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA2a) and phospholamban (PLB) in the heart was also examined.The positive inotropic response to Ca2+ and Iso at 7, 15, and 30 days after Ovx was preserved. However, at 60 days, the Ovx group had decreased myocardial contractility which was subsequently restored with E2 replacement. The reduction in SERCA2a and increase in PLB expression observed at 60 days after Ovx were restored with E2 replacement.This study demonstrated that myocardial contractility and expression of key Ca2+ handling proteins were preserved in the early phase and reduced at long-term during OSHs deprivation.Cardiovascular disease is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality among post-menopausal women in the western world [1]. It has been suggested that ovarian sex hormones (OSHs) have a protective effect on the cardiovascular system [2,3]. However, the effects of estrogen replacement therapy on the cardiovascular risk only account for about 50% of the reduction seen in cardiovascular disease suggesting that there must be additional mechanisms whereby estrogen exerts its cardioprotective effects [4]. Abstract: the combination of a diet for body weight reduction with physical exercise (pe) can result in a smaller decrease in lean mass ((lm) compared to the use of a diet as the single strategy for weight loss. however, little is known about the influence of this combination on lm composition. on this basis, the objective of the present study was to determine the effect of pe on lm composition in rats submitted to food restriction (fr). thirty-six wistar rats (315 ± 15 g) were divided into the following 6 equal groups: sedentary with an ad libitum diet (s); trained, with an ad libitum diet (t); s, with 25% fr (fr25%); s, with 50% fr (fr50%); t, with fr25% (t + fr25%), and t with fr50% (t + fr50%). the experiment lasted six weeks and the training used was swimming with an overload of 5% of body weight, five sessions/week of 60 minutes each. the chemical composition of the carcass and the concentration of glycogen and protein in the gastrocnemius muscle of the animals were determined. the percentage of protein in the carcass and the concentration of protein in the gastrocnemius muscle were lower (p<0.05) in the t + fr25% and t + fr50% groups compared to the fr25% and fr50%, respectively. on the other hand, the percentage of carcass moisture and the concentration of glycogen detected in the gastrocnemius muscle were higher (p<0.05) in the t + fr25% and t + fr50% groups compared to the fr25% and fr50% groups, respectively. the results suggest that pe, when combined with fr, promotes an increase in the concentration of glycogen and of associated water in the lm compared to the effect of fr alone.

Abstract: background/justification: studies point up the serious adverse reactions (adr) as one of the six main causes of death of hospitalized patients in the united states. the most frequent adr include the drug interaction. methods: twenty most used medications were compared, in a certain period of time, at the clinical sector of s?o lucas universitary hospital of puc-rs, to the fourteen most used ones at the ambulatório de depress?o (ade) of the same hospital. the research gathered information published since 1990 in medline and lilacs. results: several drug interactions were found among many of the studied medications, often involving the cytochrome p450 system. conclusion: the update of the medication on clinic use goes further than the expected results or the most frequent collateral effects.

Abstract: this article focuses on key approaches from social theory to analyze routine everyday life in order to affirm that certain frequent breaks occurring in the interstices of public life do not place the notion of daily existence at jeopardy - although they challenge it; on the contrary, they guarantee certain dynamics that are necessary for the social practices that spawn challenge and change. with an emphasis on michel de certeau's theory of practices, the article discusses the practices that challenge the disciplinary spaces through either daily tactics or counter-uses, with a view towards understanding the dynamic processes of everyday life in contemporary urban culture.

Abstract: this article aims to explore the differences of approaches and experiences of historical cities in urban ennoblement brazilian and portuguese historical cities, with the empirical cases in the cities of recife, salvador, porto and évora. the semi-condition that, although in different ways, characterizes the framework of the two countries in international economic and political system, allows exploring how these trends are felt at the time that the approximations and the distances that characterize the relationship history between brazil and portugal open other possibilities on the analytical understanding of the ways to cross these contemporary gentrification influences.

Abstract: this article analyses the transformations of the public space in the contemporary urban experience, presenting as an empirical reference the old bairro do recife (recife quarter), in pernambuco, brazil. the hypothesis of this work is concerned with everyday and public uses of these heritage spaces that could contribute to the qualification of certain urban spaces as public spaces. therefore, the central argument of the article is that the uses and counter-uses of gentrification spaces can constitute places, and that these places qualify urban spaces as public ones, insofar as they promote these space centers as practical and symbolic disputes for political acknowledgment and for the public visibility of differences.

Abstract:

Greases are composed by lubricating oil dispersed in a thickener that can be a metal soap, polymers or clays. Grease production using vegetable oils is increasing due to biodegradability requirements. Since vegetable oils present a worse oxidation and hydrolysis stability than mineral oils, it is usually difficult to produce a neutral grease using them. Four greases were produced using soybean oil as lubricating oil and lithium 12-hydroxy- stearate as thickener. The maximum temperature of reaction ranged from 230°C to 120°C in a bench process and a reduction in the final product acidity was observed (from 8.2% acid to 0.05% alkaline). Traditional tests to evaluate thickener structure resistance like 10,000-time worked penetration, roll stability and dropping point were performed and results compared. In addition, rheological tests were performed and the results were also compared. Results indicate that it is possible to produce a quite neutral grease using vegetable oils with good thickener structure properties.
