Depieri, Rogério A.;Panizzi, Ant?nio R.;
Revista Brasileira de Entomologia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0085-56262010000400008
Abstract: laboratory studies were conducted to compare rostrum length morphology of mandible serration and area of food and salivary canals of dichelops melacanthus (dallas) (dm), euschistus heros (f.) (eh), nezara viridula (l.) (nv), and piezodorus guildinii (westwood) (pg) (heteroptera: pentatomidae). nv showed the longest (5.9 mm) and pg the shortest (3.5 mm) rostrum length; dm and eh were intermediate. length and width of mandible tip areas holding serration was bigger for nv (106.0 and 30.2 μm, respectively) and smaller for pg (71.1 and 23.7 μm), with all species having four central teeth and three pairs of lateral teeth. the inner mandible surface showed squamous texture. cross-section of food and salivary canals (fc and sc) indicated greater area for nv and dm compared to eh and pg; however, the ratio fc/sc, yielded the highest relative area for pg.

This article discusses the notion of public space based on a case study on policies of urban regeneration and gentrification in Recife, Brazil. Taking the case study as a point of departure, the author problematises the way in which uses of (urban) space entail conflicting conceptions and different practices of relating to public space, with special emphasis on the tensions emerging from the re-significations brought about by regeneration processes. Analysis of this case, centred on the diverse and conflicting ways in which, in this context, public space becomes a space for communication and citizenship, underpins a theoretical discussion hinging on the notion of public space, problematised in its twofold sense: that of public sphere for communication and participation, and of physical space affording public access and use.

Abstract: the research was conducted to evaluate two sources of ammonia (anhydrous ammonia-nh3 or urea) to preserve alfalfa (medicago sativa l.) hay stored with high moisture. the following treatments were studied: a - control: untreated hay (12 to 15% moisture); b - hay (24 to 27% moisture) treated with nh3 (1.0% of dm); c - hay (24 to 27% moisture) treated with urea (0.9% dm); d - hay (24 to 27% moisture) treated with urea (1.8% dm); e - hay (34 to 37% moisture) treated with urea (0.9% dm) and f - hay (34 to 37% moisture) treated with urea (1.8% dm). the hays remained under plastic sheet during 60 days. after this time the stack was opened and sampled to identified the fungus genus (0 and 60 days). chemical composition was determined in relation to the crude protein (cp) and cell wall contents. the nh3 treatment was efficient to control the fungi, except paecilomyces. the urea application controlled the aspergillus and penicillium incidence. the others fungi caused forage deterioration on the high moisture hay treated with urea. the nh3 treatment did not affect the chemical composition of the hay, except the cp content increased in the hay treated with nh3.
Depieri, Rogério A;Martinez, Sueli S;
Neotropical Entomology , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-566X2010000400026
Abstract: aqueous solutions of neem oil and aqueous extracts of neem seeds and leaves were sprayed on coffee fruits for laboratory evaluation of their efficiency in reducing infestation of the coffee borer, hypothenemus hampei (ferrari), in multi-choice preference assays in laboratory. neem oil and extracts reduced infestation of fruits in a dose-dependent manner, acting as a repellent. at 0.5%, 1% and 1.5%, the oil reduced fruit infestation by 30.2%, 42.5% (p > 0.05), and 58.6% (p < 0.05), respectively, as compared with the control. seed extracts at 1%, 2% and 4% (w/v) reduced infestation by 30.9%, 38.3% (p > 0.05) and 70.2% (p < 0.05), respectively; seed extracts at 0.15%, 1.5% and 15% (w/v) reduced fruit infestation by 16.5%, 38.5% (p > 0.05) and 56.9% (p < 0.05), respectively. spraying the emulsifiable oil at 1% on coffee fruits and adult borers was compared with spraying on fruits or adults only. adult-only spraying caused low mortality (p > 0.05) and low reduction on the number of damaged fruits (p > 0.05). fruit-only spraying significantly reduced insect survival rates and the number of damaged fruits (p < 0.05). however, spraying on adults and fruits caused the greatest reduction in adult survival (55.6%; p < 0.05) and in fruit infestation (78.7%; p < 0.05), probably due to insect mortality and neem oil repellence acting together.

Polímeros , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-14282003000100014
Abstract: the main goal of the present work is to evaluate the efficiency of two different coatings used as protection against the erosion wear process of glass/kevlar fibers/epoxy resin substrates, on aircraft structures. coatings based on polyurethane paint and a colorless polyurethane film had their resistance against erosion evaluated, when subjected to blasting of glass beads. some factors, such as the physical nature of the glass bead abrasive, the distance from the glass bead source to the target, the particles speed and attack angle were considered during the blasting operation. a special apparatus was developed for the erosion tests. the protection against erosion was evaluated by weight loss of the specimens. optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy assisted by eds technique were also used to characterize the erosion process. the results showed that the polyurethane paint presents low erosion resistance. however, the efficiency of this paint was increased nearly 5 times when coated with a colorless polyurethane film, increasing consequently the service life of the aircraft component. considering the easy application of the polyurethane film onto the aircraft components, and based upon the results obtained this film is currently being used by manufacturers and operators of aircrafts.
