Abstract: the essential oils and constituent compounds have been studied for their insecticidal activity against stored grain pests. in this research, persistence of the essential oils in stored maize subject to infestation by maize weevil, sitophilus zeamais mots. (coleoptera: curculionidae) were evaluated. persistence of oils and eugenol were evaluated in the initial period (after impregnation) and at 30, 60, 90 and 120 days of storage. mortalities of s. zeamais in the initial period ranged between 93.8 (piper hispidinervum, melaleuca leucadendron and eugenol) to 100% (eugenia uniflora, green fruits of schinus terebinthifolius and piper marginatum). from the 30th day, mortalities declined, except for p. marginatum (92.2%), which reached 53.1% at 120 days of storage. according to the regression equations adjusted for the number of s. zeamais emerged throughout the storage period, there was no significance for the oils of s. terebinthifolius, p. marginatum and the control. considering general average, the oil of p. marginatum was the most persistent, providing emergency of 0.30 insects; differing from the other oils, as eugenol and the control. the other treatments differed in relation to the control.

Revista Brasileira de Farmacognosia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-695X2007000100005
Abstract: trembleya laniflora (d. don) cogn. (melastomataceae), xyris platystachia alb. nilss. (xyridaceae) and xyris pterygoblephara kunth., brazilian species collected from a biodiversity hotspot for conservation priority, had their antimicrobial activity evaluated against standardized strains of staphylococcus aureus and micrococcus luteus, by the agar diffusion assay. all extracts, assayed in the concentration of 2000 μg/disc, were active against m. luteus, whereas s. aureus growth was inhibited only by t. laniflora leaves and x. platystachia aerial parts. fractionation of the extracts by partition between immiscible solvents resulted in active fractions from extracts originally inactive against s. aureus. activity was mainly found in low and medium polar fractions. the extract of t. laniflora leaves was also fractionated by silica gel column chromatography and both the hplc fingerprint and antimicrobial activity of the obtained fractions were distinct of those originated from the partition process.

Abstract: This is a cross-sectional, correlational and quantitative study conducted on 210 postpartum women from January to July 2013 at the breastfeeding outpatient clinic of a public maternity. The study was carried out in order to assess the determining factors in maintaining an exclusive breastfeeding in the first month of the newborn’s life, the participation of the nurse in encouraging this process, and the reasons leading to a premature weaning. Prior births proved to be a positive factor for exclusive breastfeeding (Odds Ratio (OR) 0.359; CI 95% 0.137 - 0.941; p = 0.031). The absence of a nurse in the medical appointments resulted in a threefold risk to have no prenatal exclusive breastfeeding guidance whatsoever (OR 3.025; CI 95% 1.567 - 5.840; p = 0.001). The reported reasons for a premature weaning were difficulty latching-on, cracked nipples, poor milk that does not satiate the baby’s hunger, and production of little or no milk at all. The results provide information for the adoption of strategies during pregnancy and the postpartum period aimed to promote an exclusive breastfeeding, checking for the possible influence of the woman’s personal circumstances in her choosing exclusive breastfeeding, as well as the participation of the nurse in the mother’s decision.

Abstract: Oxidative stress is a biological process that occurs in response to an imbalance between prooxidant and antioxidant substances and has been described in the pathophysiology of more than 200 clinical disorders. In this study, we evaluate the relationship between genetic, demographic, social, environmental, and health factors and redox imbalance biomarkers in a group of children and adolescents environmentally exposed to atmospheric pollutants and mercury in the Brazilian Western Amazon. This is a cross-sectional study of the relationship between demographic, genetic, and socioenvironmental factors and serum concentrations of redox imbalance biomarkers (thiol groups, malondialdehyde, and glutathione S-transferase [GST]) in children and adolescents living in the municipality of Porto Velho, Rond?nia. The investigated factors were hierarchically organized into groups of variables and their relationship with redox imbalance biomarkers was estimated by a multiple linear regression model. Children and adolescents with asthma, with C-reactive protein values, with the polymorphic variant GSTP1, and exposed to indoor air pollution presented lower thiol serum concentrations when compared to those categorized in their respective reference groups. GST activity and malondialdehyde serum concentrations were positively related to weekly fish consumption and exposure to PM2.5. This study showed that enzymatic GST activity and malondialdehyde serum concentrations are positively associated with environmental factors, especially air pollution (β = 8.64 U/L for GST and β = 0.244 μmol/L for MDA in high exposure group; p-value < 0.01); while serum thiol concentrations presented an inversely proportional relationship with markers of general health status, such asthma (median: 0.45 mmol/L vs. 0.48 mmol/L; p-value < 0.05), acute inflammation (β = -0.25 mmol/L; p-value < 0.01), and positively with genetic factor (β = 0.12 mmol/L for Val/Val; p-value < 0.05).

Abstract: Introduction: shoulder joint has the greatest range of motion in the human body. The shoulder anatomy promotes high mobility and favors relative sacrifice of articular stability, making it susceptible and more prone to events of instability and dislocation. This review aimed at identifying main complications of surgical treatment of anterior shoulder dislocation. Methodology: This systematic review was conducted according to the International Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies which were eligible for this systematic review included: English or Spanish language, studies published from 2000, which mentioned surgical complications of anterior shoulder dislocation in their results, both in open and arthroscopic surgery. Included studies which were required to have at least 1 complication following surgical repair. Only studies from original data were included. Results: We found 228 potentially eligible studies for the survey. Through the inclusion and exclusion criteria and after consensus among reviewers, we chose 9 studies to compose the systematic review. Conclusion: Important information emerges: recurring instability, recurring dislocation, external rotation limitation and arthritis are main surgical complications of anterior shoulder dislocation.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to evaluate the toxicity of the insecticides imidacloprid/β-cyfluthrin (Connect 100/12.5 SC), chlorfenapyr (Pirate 240 SC), chlorpyrifos (Astro 450 EW), novaluron (Rimon 100 CE), spinosad (Tracer 480 SC) and triflumuron (Certero 480 SC), as used in corn crops ( Zea mays ), to parent generation females and to F1 and F2 generation specimens of Trichogrammaatopovirilia. Eggs of Anagasta kuehniella were glued to cardstock strips and placed under a germicidal lamp to kill embryos. These were then sprayed with the chemical products using a Potter tower and exposed to parasitism 24, 48, and 96 hours after application of the compounds for a span of 24 hours. We evaluated the number of dead specimens and the number of eggs parasitized by parent generation females, as well as the percent emergence and parasitic capacity of the F1 and F2 generations. Chlorfenapyr, spinosad, chlorpyrifos, and imidacloprid/β-cyfluthrin were moderately harmful to adult T. atopovirilia, while novaluron was slightly harmful. Triflumuron was harmless and could be used in integrated pest management programs intended to preserve adult T. atopovirilia in corn crops.
