Uma análise da hipótese da convergência para os municípios brasileiros
Coelho, Rodrigo Lara Pinto;Figueiredo, Lízia de;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402007000300003
Abstract: this paper attempts to ascertain which of the convergence hypotheses - absolute, conditional or club - best describes the dynamics of the brazilian municipalities income over the period 1970-2000. the results based on the regression tree method and on robustness tests demonstrate the importance of initial conditions on the determination of municipalities income growth rate, which suggests the dominance of the club convergence hypothesis over the other two.

Abstract: rice plants present a high demand for nutrients, being nitrogen the main limiting factor to their yield. the objective of this study was to verify the existence of differences among local and improved rice genotypes, concerning the nitrogen efficiency use, in a brazilian savannah soil, in gurupi, tocantins state, brazil. seven rice cultivars (brs-caiapó, brs-bonan?a, epagri-114, brs-sertaneja, brs-primavera, brsmg-conai, and brsmg-curinga) were cultivated in two distinct environments. in order to simulate environments with high and low nitrogen contents, 20 kg ha-1 and 120 kg ha-1 of n were respectively applied. the experiments were carried out in a completely randomized blocks design, with four replications. the features evaluated were grain yield, days for flowering and ripening, lodging, plants height, and 100 grains weight. it was possible to conclude that the environment with high nitrogen content was responsible for the highest plants height, the environment with low nitrogen content delayed the cultivars flowering stage, and the brsmg-curinga cultivar was the only one that reacted to the fertilization increase, with a significant increase in grains yield.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effects of an early mobilization protocol on respiratory and peripheral muscles in critically ill patients. METHODS: A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted with 59 male and female patients on mechanical ventilation. The patients were divided into a conventional physical therapy group (control group, n=14) that received the sector's standard physical therapy program and an early mobilization group (n=14) that received a systematic early mobilization protocol. Peripheral muscle strength was assessed with the Medical Research Council score, and respiratory muscle strength (determined by the maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures) was measured using a vacuum manometer with a unidirectional valve. Systematic early mobilization was performed on five levels. RESULTS: Significant increases were observed for values for maximal inspiratory pressure and the Medical Research Council score in the early mobilization group. However, no statistically significant improvement was observed for maximal expiratory pressure or MV duration (days), length of stay in the intensive care unit (days), and length of hospital stay (days). CONCLUSION: The early mobilization group showed gains in inspiratory and peripheral musc

Abstract: objective: to compare clinical and pathological staging in patients with non-small cell lung cancer submitted to surgical treatment, as well as to identify the causes of discordance. methods: data related to patients treated at the department of thoracic surgery of the pontifical catholic university of rio grande do sul s?o lucas hospital were analyzed retrospectively. sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy were calculated for clinical stages ia, ib, and iib. the kappa index was used to determine the concordance between clinical and pathological staging. results: of the 92 patients studied, 33.7% were classified as clinical stage ia, 50% as ib, and 16.3% as iib. the concordance between clinical and pathological staging was 67.5% for stage ia, 54.3% for ib, and 66.6% for iib. the accuracy of the clinical staging was greater for stage ia, and a kappa of 0.74, in this case, confirmed a substantial association with pathological staging. the difficulty in evaluating nodal metastatic disease is responsible for the low concordance in patients with clinical stage ib. conclusions: the concordance between clinical and pathological staging is low, and patients are frequently understaged (in the present study, only one case was overstaged). strategies are necessary to improve clinical staging and, consequently, the treatment and prognosis of patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Abstract: purpose: to analyze interobserver variability in the histopathological diagnosis of premalignant breast lesions before and after training with diagnostic standardized criteria. methods: slides containing histological sections representative of three kinds of breast lesions (atypical ductal hyperplasia, ductal carcinoma in situ and ductal carcinoma in situ with microinvasion), revised by an international specialist in breast pathology whose diagnoses were considered as golden standard, have been used. the same slides have been evaluated at two different times by five pathologists from the community according to a specific protocol for classifying the lesions. in the first evaluation, the cases were analyzed and classified according to the specific criteria adopted in each service. at the second time, the pathologists were given a tutorial containing diagnostic criteria and representative images, and the lesions were classified again, employing the standardized criteria. interobserver analysis using percent agreement and weighted kappa index has been performed. results: there has been a large diagnostic variation among the pathologists in the initial analysis without the use of standardized diagnostic criteria concerning the diagnostic, nuclear grade and histological grade (weighted kappa indexes related to diagnosis varied from 0.15 to 0.40). in the second evaluation using standardized criteria, there has been a significant improvement in the diagnostic concordance among the five pathologists concerning the diagnosis, nuclear grade and histological grade (weighted kappa indexes related to diagnosis have varied from 0.42 to 0.80). conclusions: interobserver concordance related to diagnosis and classification of breast premalignant lesions may be improved with specific training and the use of standardized histopathological criteria.

Skinner's Radical Behaviorism is many times, criticized in an inappropriate and prejudiced way. Actually, many of this critics fit Watson's Psychology, not Radical Behaviorism. Understanding the differences between the idealist and the materialist way of thinking help to clear the way of studying and comprehending the behavior for Radical Behaviorism, as well as its not mentalist position. The study of the historical evolution of Behaviorism is necessary in order to understand the differences between Methodological and Radical Behaviorism as well as their contributions to Psychology.

Abstract: in almost two centuries of the existence of the city of pelotas staged its a cultural tradition has been recognized in all the corners of the state of rio grande do sul and, even in the national rank. however, working with art has been a process subject to setbacks, for the reason that its product is not tangible and does not grant ownership to its consumers most of the time. when it comes to happen, these products not always follow the capitalist logic of the consumerism market - which seeks to sell more quantity than quality - with the resulting tendency to an unsustainable production and distribution.
