Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0001-37652012005000023
Abstract: although the theory of evolution is more than 150 years old, a substantial proportion of the world population does not mention it when explaining the origin of human beings. the usual alternative conception is offered by creationism, one of the main obstacles to full acceptance of evolution in many countries. national polls have demonstrated that schooling and religiosity are negatively correlated, with scientists being one of the least religious professionals. herein we analyzed both (1) the profile of 1st semester undergraduate students and (2), thesis and dissertations, concerning religious and evolutionary thoughts from biology and veterinary schools at the largest university of south america. we have shown that students of biology are biased towards evolution before they enter university and also that the presence of an evolutionary-thinking academic atmosphere influences the deism/religiosity beliefs of postgraduate students.
Partículas nanométricas de ferritas de ítrio

Química Nova , 1999,
Abstract: Nanoparticles of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) were obtained by coprecipitation. The particles were prepared by hydrolysis in acid medium with addition of ammonia or urea, for homogeneous nucleation, at 90oC. Different compositions and spherical morphologies were achieved by changing reactants concentrations and precipitation agent. X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis and electrophoretic mobility were carried out on these particles to investigate the obtained phase, phase transition temperature, morphology, particle size and zeta potential, respectively.

Abstract: we sought to establish an interlocution between national information policy and information asymmetry themes, focusing on the telecommunications sector in brazil. the objective of the investigation was to apprehend how information asymmetry is materialized in the regulatory framework of this sector and the reasons for its occurence in this context. the metodology was based on the legal rationality viewpoint and focused its dialectical perspective. due to examination, we were able to infer that this legislation is a result of a conflict beetwen the public and the private which take place in the nacional context, under strong international influences. the comparison between the public and the private regime that rules the telecommunication services demonstrated that the information asymmetry is a hallmark of the private regime. this arena unveil a field in which mercantile interests have hegemonic domain and the information asymmetry is a powerful tool for maintaining this hegemony.

Abstract: renegotiation of the public debt in conditions of excessive debt. this paper studies the debt overhang models and maturity management models, and analyses both theoretically and historically the debt renegotiations which the final outcome is a lower public debt burden. from the theoretical view the renegotiation plans can be pareto improving, both creditors and debtors can be better-off, and the value of the new debt will price the new reputation and debtors' willingness to pay. from the historical point of view, funded debts were the instrument that debtors used to improve reputation.

Abstract: background - keratoacanthoma is a benign cutaneous neoplasm that preferentially affects fair skin individuals of older age groups and involves sun-exposed areas. apart from ultraviolet radiation exposure, its etiology is related to several carcinogens, including human papillomavirus (hpv) infection. objectives: to assess the prevalence of hpv dna and its genotypes in solitary keratoacanthoma lesions of immunocompetent patients. methods: keratoacanthoma lesions of patients with no evidence of immunological involvement, excised from 1996 to 2000, at a university hospital, were assessed. histological aspects, deparafinization and dna extraction of these lesions were evaluated. the specimens positive for hpv dna were submitted to gene sequencing to determine the genotype. results: fifty-eight patients were studied, mean age of 64.5±13.8 years. both sexes were similarly affected, and the most common sites were upper limbs (50%) and face (27.6%). hpv dna was detected in 48 (82.7%) keratoacanthoma fragments, and the genotypes 6, 11 and 16 were the most prevalent. conclusions: the high prevalence of hpv dna in solitary keratoacanthoma lesions may suggest viral participation in its oncogenesis.

Abstract: despite the increased knowledge about the biological basis of behavior, the exact neurobiological mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia remain unknown. as a consequence of this situation, pharmacological interventions in schizophrenia are mostly based on empirical evidence, but not pathophysiological models. a model of schizophrenia that leads to some testable hypothesis about new potential therapeutic interventions is therefore presented. from a theoretical viewpoint, this model integrates recent neuropsychological and brain imaging findings in schizophrenia patients with new studies in the molecular, cellular and circuit underpinnings of normal brain development and synaptic plasticity. thus, it is proposed that schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental illness characterized by inappropriately modulated glutamatergic neurotransmission secondary to dysfunctional gabaergic interneurons in extended regions of the brain. subtle unbalances in gaba/glutamate neurotransmission may explain the cognitive, social and motor-coordination deficits reported in the pre-psychotic stages of schizophrenia. psychotic episodes emerge later on as a result of increased glutamatergic neurotransmission triggered by the increased dopaminergic neurotransmission of adolescence and early adulthood. excessive glutamatergic neurotransmission during the first psychotic episodes may explain the progressive reductions in gray and white matter reported in patients with schizophrenia in recent prospective studies. in support of this hypothesis, i will summarize data obtained in our own laboratory studying patients with schizophrenia, as well as in an animal model of intermittent exposure to phencyclidine. as a corollary of these ideas, gaba/glutamate modulating drugs, such acamprosate or lamotrigine, are proposed as potential treatments for the early stages of this disorder
