The effect of environment on development and survival of pupae of the necrophagous fly Ophyra albuquerquei Lopes (Diptera, Muscidae)
Krüger, Rodrigo Ferreira;Wendt, Lisiane Dilli;Ribeiro, Paulo Bretanha;
Revista Brasileira de Entomologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0085-56262011005000041
Abstract: the effect of environment on development and survival of pupae of the necrophagous fly ophyra albuquerquei lopes (diptera, muscidae). species of ophyra robineau-desvoidy, 1830 are found in decomposing bodies, usually in fresh, bloated and decay stages. ophyra albuquerquei lopes, for example, can be found in animal carcasses. the influence of environmental factors has not been evaluated in puparia of o. albuquerquei. thus, the focus of this work was motivated by the need for models to predict the development of a necrophagous insect as a function of abiotic factors. colonies of o. albuquerquei were maintained in the laboratory to obtain pupae. on the tenth day of each month 200 pupae, divided equally into 10 glass jars, were exposed to the environment and checked daily for adult emergence of each sample. we concluded that the high survival rate observed suggested that the diets used for rearing the larvae and maintaining the adults were appropriate. also, the data adjusted to robust generalized linear models and there were no interruptions of o. albuquerquei pupae development within the limits of temperatures studied in southern rio grande do sul, given the high survival presented.

Abstract:
Non-overlap of hosts used by three congeneric and sympatric loranthaceous mistletoe species in an Amazonian savanna: host generalization to extreme specialization
Fadini, Rodrigo Ferreira;
Acta Botanica Brasilica , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-33062011000200010
Abstract: two main hypotheses predominate in the literature on mistletoe-host specificity: (1) mistletoes are only likely to specialize on plant species on which they are frequently deposited; and (2) compatibility between mistletoes and plant species is a prerequisite for mistletoe-host parasitism. i explored these hypotheses by studying the seed deposition patterns and mistletoe-host compatibility in populations of three congeneric and sympatric mistletoe species of the genus psittacanthus (p. biternatus, p. eucalyptifolius and p. plagiophyllus - loranthaceae). i recorded the presence or absence of these mistletoe species in 15 tree species in a savanna patch in amazonia. among the five tree species that i found to be potential hosts (at least one tree individual infected), i also recorded if they had at least one mistletoe seed of any species attached to their branches. finally, i planted seeds of all mistletoe species on the same individual trees in various hosts and non-host species and recorded seed survivorship and seedling establishment within 7 (p. plagiophyllus) to 12 months (p. biternatus and p. eucalyptifolius) after planting. there was no overlap among trees used as hosts by the three psittacanthus species. th e most specialized mistletoe species occurred in different host tree species with low relative abundance at the study site (psittacanthus eucalyptifolius on vatairea macrocarpa (benth.) ducke, and p. plagiophyllus on anacardium occidentale l.). mistletoe-host compatibility, and not seed deposition patterns, was the factor most likely to explain patterns of host use by psittacanthus species at this study site.
Principal Component Analysis of EBT2 Radiochromic Film for Multichannel Film Dosimetry  [PDF]

International Journal of Medical Physics,Clinical Engineering and Radiation Oncology (IJMPCERO) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ijmpcero.2014.33021
Abstract:

Radiochromic film with a dye incorporated into the radiation sensitive layer [Gafchromic EBT2, Ashland, Inc.] may be digitized by a color transparency scanner, digitally processed, and calibrated so that a digital image in units of radiation absorbed dose is obtained. A transformation from raw scanner values to dose values was developed based upon a principal component analysis of the optical densities of the red, green and blue channels of the color image of a dose of 0.942 Gy delivered by a Sr-90/Y-90 disk-shaped source. In the order of increasing eigenvalue, the three eigenimages of the principal component analysis contained, by visual inspection, 1) mainly noise; 2) mainly a pattern of irregular streaks; and 3) most of the expected dose information along with some of the same background streaking that predominated in the second eigenimage. The combination of the second and third eigenimages that minimized the background streaking was converted into a transformation of the red, green and blue channels optical densities and applied to films with a range of doses from 0 to 63.7 Gy. The curve of dose vs. processed optical density was fit by a two-phase association curve. This processing was applied to a film exposed from its edge by a different Y-90 source in a configuration that was modeled by Monte Carlo simulation. The depth-dose curves of the measurement and simulation agree closely, suggesting that this approach is a valid method of processing EBT2 radiochromic film into maps of radiation absorbed dose.

Revista de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81082011000100010
Abstract: prolonged exposure to multiple traumatic events of an interpersonal nature, particularly during development, has shown psychological consequences and symptoms not included among the current diagnostic criteria of post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd). these negative and chronic situations during childhood and adolescence provide further evidence of the existence of a psychopathological syndrome associated with complex (dis)adaptations to a number of traumatic effects. the absence of a cohesive and reliable diagnosis for these patients negatively affects symptom identification and treatment planning. the aim of the present study was to review the definition of trauma, presenting the concept of complex trauma and investigating its clinical implications and the diagnostic categories deriving from this construct. important questions are raised about differences between complex trauma and ptsd, followed by an investigation of ptsd symptoms and comorbid disorders, as well as the limitations of ptsd diagnosis. taking into consideration the psychopathological impact associated with complex trauma, the article discusses the possibility of including a new diagnostic category in the 5th edition of the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders is discussed, as part of the spectrum of post-traumatic psychopathologies.

Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542003000500018
Abstract: the concentration of large rural land properties by a few landholders is still very high in brazil. in order to minimize this situation the government established at december 1999, the portaria incra/p n° 558/1999, cancelling the whole issuing of land titles of properties with 10.000ha or more properties. a time of six months for land titling and registration was given, but after eighteen months, the greatest number of the properties were not regularized. this fact could appears like land unlawfull seizure. in this work it was used a gis, software spring, for generate cadastral maps of rural properties at tocantins state. the work allowed to conclude that the spring software is excellent in the production of cadastral maps for describing spatial information and individual parcels, as well as the fact that these maps are georeferenced. thus spring could be a very important tool for the land reform.

B. I. Imasogie, U. Wendt
Journal of Minerals and Materials Characterization and Engineering (JMMCE) , 2004, DOI: 10.4236/jmmce.2004.31001
Abstract: A procedure and specification for evaluating the degree of spheroidization of graphite in spheroidal graphite iron (SGI), using a computer-based image analyzing system has been developed as an aid to structure-property-quality assessment. Both global and feature-specific numerical indices have been programmed and implemented using a Zeiss Jenaphot 2000 projection microscope and SEM interfaced to a computer-based MACROS III analyzer and a CCD video camera. The modular procedure has been tested and used to evaluate the effect of variation in the degree of spheroidization of graphite on the 0.2 % offset yield strength for an iron series ranging from ASTM type I (fully nodular) to ASTM type II-III-IV (mixtures of nodular and compacted/vermicular graphite) and were found to indicate good correlation.

Relaciones Internacionales , 2005,
All international relations theories are based on social theories about agents, processes and social structures. Social theories do not determine the content of our international theory but they structure our questions about global politics and our answers approaches to those questions. The main topic in the social theory debates is what kind of fundament can offer the set of questions and which are the most profitable research strategies in order to be able to explain the revolutionary changes that seems to be going on since the end of the XXth century.
