Four Freedoms, For All: American Information Agencies and the Effort to Publicize Nazi Crimes against Humanity Quatre libertés pour tous : les agences d’information américaine et l’effort de médiatisation des crimes nazi contre l’humanité
Jeffrey Demsky
Revue LISA / LISA e-journal , 2012, DOI: 10.4000/lisa.4869

Breast Cancer Research , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/bcr3138
Abstract: We conducted a case-control study of 1,665 pairs of women with a deleterious mutation in either BRCA1 (n = 1,243 pairs) or BRCA2 (n = 422 pairs). Breast cancer cases and unaffected controls were matched on year of birth, mutation status, country of residence and parity. Information about reproductive factors, including breastfeeding for each live birth, was collected from a routinely administered questionnaire. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the association between ever having breastfed, as well as total duration of breastfeeding, and the risk of breast cancer.Among BRCA1 mutation carriers, breastfeeding for at least one year was associated with a 32% reduction in risk (OR = 0.68; 95% CI 0.52 to 0.91; P = 0.008); breastfeeding for two or more years conferred a greater reduction in risk (OR = 0.51; 95% CI 0.35 to 0.74). Among BRCA2 mutation carriers, there was no significant association between breastfeeding for at least one year and breast cancer risk (OR = 0.83; 95% CI 0.53 to 1.31; P = 0.43).These data extend our previous findings that breastfeeding protects against BRCA1-, but not BRCA2-associated breast cancer. BRCA mutation carriers should be advised of the benefit of breastfeeding in terms of reducing breast cancer risk.In the general population, reproductive factors, including late age at menarche, parity and breastfeeding, have been shown to protect against the development of breast cancer [1-3]. Various proposed mechanisms include reducing lifetime exposure to ovarian hormones, reducing the cumulative number of ovulatory cycles and differentiation of the breast lobules [4,5]. We and others have evaluated the impact of reproductive factors in the etiology of BRCA-associated breast cancer, although the results are conflicting and vary by BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation [6-8]. With respect to breastfeeding and breast cancer risk in BRCA1 mutation carriers, two previous studies reported no relationship [9,10] and three studies reported a protectiv
THE BOY WHO LEARNED TO READ THROUGH SUSTAINED VIDEO GAME PLAY: CONSIDERING SYSTEMIC RESISTANCE TO THE USE OF ‘NEW TEXTS’ IN THE CLASSROOM
Rochelle SKOGEN
Journal of Unschooling and Alternative Learning , 2012,
Abstract: Various studies have discussed the pedagogical potential of video game play in the classroom but resistance to such texts remains high. The study presented here discusses the case study of one young boy who, having failed to learn to read in the public school system was able to learn in a private Sudbury model school where video games were not only allowed but considered important learning tools. Findings suggest that the incorporation of such new texts in today’s public schools have the potential to motivate and enhance the learning of children.
Psychopathology in Pediatric Epilepsy: Role of Antiepileptic Drugs
Rochelle Caplan
Frontiers in Neurology , 2012, DOI: 10.3389/fneur.2012.00163
Abstract: Children with epilepsy are usually treated with antiepileptic drugs (AEDS). Some AEDs adversely affect behavior in susceptible children. Since psychiatric comorbidity is prevalent in pediatric epilepsy, this paper attempts to disentangle these AED side effects from the psychopathology associated with this illness. It first outlines the clinical and methodological problems involved in determining if AEDs contribute to the behavior and emotional problems of children with epilepsy. It then presents research evidence for and against the role AEDs play in the psychopathology of children with epilepsy, and outlines how future studies might investigate this problem. A brief description of how to clinically separate out AED effects from the complex illness-related and psychosocial factors that contribute to the behavior difficulties of children with epilepsy concludes the paper.

Contribui??o ao conhecimento do Cruá (Sicana odorifera Naud.)
Rochelle, Luiz Antonio;
Anais da Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz , 1986, DOI: 10.1590/S0071-12761986000200004
Abstract: the experiment was done in order to increase the knowledge of cruá (sicana odorifera naud.) of the appreciable quality, as well to evaluate some aspects related to morphology in the initial growth. the seeds utilized in the experiment were obtained in perfect conditions and some in greenhouse of didactic vegetagle garden, botany department esalq. the seeds were arranged in two positions at sowing: horizontal and vertical. substratum utilized was mixture of forest soiland river sand. it was verified that positions of seeds do not affected germination, but to morphological characters there was significative differences. to length of future principal root (cr), length of petiole (cp) it was detected significance at 5% level, also for distance between cotyledonous leaves to insertion of definitive first leaf (dfcifd), length of limb (cl) and breadth of limb (ll) were detected significances at 1% level. these significances refered to seeds in the horizontal position. the distance between collum to insertion of cotyledonous leaves (dcifc) was not significative.
Descri??o taxon?mica de cultivares de Cucurbita Moschata duchesne
Rochelle, Luiz Antonio;
Anais da Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz , 1973, DOI: 10.1590/S0071-12761973000100010
Abstract: we summed up the results of the studies of 7 cultivars belonging to specie cucurbita moschata, taking into account their botanical description because they have not been taxonomically characterized yet, though largely known and grown for their economical value. the breeding works of the cultivars of the above mentioned specie have been carried out since 1942 by the section of olericulture of agronomic institute of campinas (i. a. c.) view of the economic importance the|y have. we used seeds from controlled pollination, given away to us by the iac-olericulture section, in order to obtain the plants of the 7 cultivars. the statistical planning followed the steps of distribution at random using the 7 cultivars with 10 replications. the botanical description of the cultivars was based upon the morphological characteristics of the vegetative and floral organs and upon the characteristics of the fruits and seeds as well, taking into consideration: a - the shape, dimensions, presence of lengthwise striae and indumentum of the main stem. b - the dimensions and indumentum of the petiole, the angle formed by the outer ribs at the base of the leaf blade and the angle magnitude, the length of the ribs, the presence or absence of silvery spots on the leaf blade; width an length of leaf blade. c - the shapes of the tendrils. d - for the male and female flowers: the length of the peduncle, the length of the tube and of the lobules of the calyx and its shape, the length of the tubes and of the lobules of the corolla, the diameter of the upper part the corolla tube, diameter between the apexes of the corolla lobules, the length of the filament and the length of the anther, and the shape of the latter for male flowers; the dimensions, positionings, shape and indumentum of the ovary, length and color of stigma, length of the stigma lobules, the variable shape of the nectariferous disk at the style base for female flowers. e - the dimensions, shape, color, parts, consistence and thickn
