Human thermal comfort: an irreversibility-based approach emulating empirical clothed-body correlations and the conceptual energy balance equation
Rabi, José A.;Silva, Robson L.;Oliveira, Celso E. L.;
Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-58782012000400005
Abstract: exergetic analysis can provide useful information as it enables the identification of irreversible phenomena bringing about entropy generation and, therefore, exergy losses (also referred to as irreversibilities). as far as human thermal comfort is concerned, irreversibilities can be evaluated based on parameters related to both the occupant and his surroundings. as an attempt to suggest more insights for the exergetic analysis of thermal comfort, this paper calculates irreversibility rates for a sitting person wearing fairly light clothes and subjected to combinations of ambient air and mean radiant temperatures. the thermodynamic model framework relies on the so-called conceptual energy balance equation together with empirical correlations for invoked thermoregulatory heat transfer rates adapted for a clothed body. results suggested that a minimum irreversibility rate may exist for particular combinations of the aforesaid surrounding temperatures. by separately considering the contribution of each thermoregulatory mechanism, the total irreversibility rate rendered itself more responsive to either convective or radiative clothing-influenced heat transfers, with exergy losses becoming lower if the body is able to transfer more heat (to the ambient) via convection.

Abstract: the current study focuses on outpatient treatment of patients (n = 229) with american cutaneous leishmaniasis from 2001 to 2004, before and after decentralization of treatment to the municipal level in northwestern paraná state, brazil. while the treatment was still centralized, clinical evaluation and medical records were more complete and detailed, treatment was initiated earlier, and follow-up of the outcome was evaluated in 95% of patients and 100% of cases that received two treatment cycles. treatment also complied with the guidelines of the american cutaneous leishmaniasis control manual. after decentralization, treatment was less rigorous: 32% of patients were treated with two cycles of n-methyl glucamine antimoniate without complying with the guidelines; 72.6% of patients received inadequate treatment; 84% of cases failed to received proper clinical follow-up. lack of information on patient clinical records posed a serious obstacle to evaluation. the current study failed to identify any benefit in decentralizing treatment of american cutaneous leishmaniasis to the local level.

Abstract: this article highlights the role played by the press and the police upon learning about a slaves? planned rebellion scheduled to take place during the celebrations in honor of saint anne on july 27, 1884 in the county of s?o matheus, in the northern area of the province of espírito santo, a revolt intended to promote general slave emancipation in the county. throughout the nineteenth century slaves were wont to take advantage of religious celebrations to carry out massive insurrections. the events which took place in s?o matheus help throw some more light into both this practice and the role played by the press in concealing facts that might stir up panic in the society of the time.
Strategic Military Colonisation: The Cape Eastern Frontier 1806–1872
L Robson, M Oranje
Scientia Militaria: South African Journal of Military Studies , 2012,
Abstract: The Cape Eastern Frontier of South Africa offers a fascinating insight into British military strategy as well as colonial development. The Eastern Frontier was for over 100 years a very turbulent frontier. It was the area where the four main population groups (the Dutch, the British, the Xhosa and the Khoikhoi) met, and in many respects, key decisions taken on this frontier were seminal in the shaping of South Africa. This article seeks to analyse this frontier in a spatial manner, to analyse how British settlement patterns on the ground were influenced by strategy and policy. The time frame of the study reflects the truly imperial colonial era, from the second British occupation of the Cape colony in 1806 until representative self-governance of the Cape colony in 1872.

Abstract: the objective of this research was to analyze the effect of the no-tillage organic green onion under living and dead soil cover, with residual application of composted mulch. the experimental design was used in randomized blocks with four replicates, in split-plot arrangement with four replications. the plot corresponded to the planting system (no-tillage with living mulch of arachis pintoi, living mulch of native weed, straw mulch and conventional tillage). in each plot the split-plot were represented by the residual doses of organic compost 35, 70 e 105t ha-1 year-1 in the dry compost. the no-tillage in the straw provided superior results to the conventional tillage of the soil and to the two no-tillage systems under living mulch of a. pintoi and native weed. the residual effect of the organic manuring grew with the increase of the fertilizer dose in the no tillage straw, which didn't happen in the no-tillage with living mulch.
