This study aimed to assess the efficiency of stunning of beef cattle slaughtered in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul state and the influence of road and fluvial transport on carcass bruising, the quantification of bruises on the right and left half carcasses and the forequarter and the hindquarter, as well as the size of bruises. The cattle slaughtered on the same day and the older cattle had the highest number of shots. From a total of 106 carcasses assessed, 87 (82.0%) had one or more bruises, totaling 136 bruises, which resulted in the removal of 60.133 kg meat, with a general mean of 0.567 kg by animal or 0.691 kg by animal, considering only the animals that had bruises. There was a significant difference in terms of frequency of carcass bruising among the treatments. The right half carcasses of all animals in all treatments had the highest proportions of bruising incidence. There was no significant difference in the means of size of bruises among the treatments. The lack of maintenance of the pneumatic powered stunner caused the highest number of shots. Key words: Carcass bruising, pneumatic powered stunner.

Ciência Rural , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782010005000101
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of orally administered leucomycin at 90 and 180ppm for the prevention of porcine proliferative enteropathy (ppe) in experimentally infected pigs. a total of 90 commercial five-week-old pigs were randomly assigned to receive leucomycin in feeding at 90 (t2), 180ppm (t3), or untreated (t1). all animals in the treated groups received medicated feed for 14 days starting one day before inoculation. each pig was inoculated intragastrically with approximately 4.5x109 lawsonia intracellularis in the form of porcine intestinal mucosal homogenate. body weight, feed consumption and clinic signs were evaluated throughout the study. necropsies and gross evaluation of intestines were performed in all animals on day 23 post-inoculation (pi) or at death, and ileum samples were collected for immunohistochemistry (ihc) for l. intracellularis. clinical presentation of the disease was more evident in the non-medicated group (t1) than in the medicated ones (t2, t3) between days 16 and 21pi. average daily gain, average daily feed consumption and feed conversion efficiency were better in groups treated with either dose of leucomycin. the total intestine lesion length per group (t1, t2 and t3) was 869, 473 and 331cm, respectively. the majority of the animals (84.4%) were positive for l. intracellularis antigen in ileum sections stained by ihc. under the conditions of this study, leucomycin administered in feed at 90 and 180ppm for 14 days was effective in improving performance of pigs inoculated with intestinal homogenate containing l. intracellularis.

Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502009000400011
Abstract: purpose: to determine whether rocuronium would provide safe, short-term immobilization in podocnemis expansa. methods: twenty p. expansa, weighing on average 1.59 ± 0.28 kg, were subjected to two protocols: g1 0.25 mg/kg im of rocuronium and 0.07 mg/kg im of neostigmine, while g2 received 0.50 mg/kg im of rocuronium and 0.07 mg/kg im of neostigmine. the drugs were applied, respectively, in the left and right thoracic members. assessments were made of the anesthetic parameters of respiratory frequency, heartbeat, righting reflex, cloacal relaxation, palpebral and pupilar reflexes, easy handling, muscle relaxation, locomotion, response to pain stimuli in the right thoracic members, pelvic members and tail, ambient humidity and temperature. results: they were not found statistical differences between the dosages for the majority of the assessments. g1 was as efficient as g2. a consistent neuromuscular blockade effect was recorded 12 ± 4.21 minutes in g1 and g2. all the animals were recovered in 150 minutes. conclusions: administration of rocuronium at dose of 0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg im is a safe and effective adjunct to clinical proceedings or pre-anesthetics in p. expansa. because rocuronium does not provide any analgesic or sedative effects, the duration of neuromuscular blockade without anesthesia should be minimized to avoid undue stress.
