Microalgae Lipid and Biodiesel Production: A Brazilian Challenge  [PDF]

Abstract: Global increases in atmospheric CO2 and climate change are drawing considerable attention to identify sources of energy with lower environmental impact than those currently in use. Biodiesel production from microalgae lipids can, in the future, occupy a prominent place in energy generation because it represents a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based fuels. Several species of microalgae produce large amounts of lipids per biomass unit. Triacylglycerol is the fatty acid used for biodiesel production and the main source of energy reserves in microalgae. The current literature indicates that nutrient limitations can lead to triacylglycerol accumulation in different species of microalgae. Further efforts in microalgae screening for biodiesel production are needed to discover a native microalgae that will be feasible for biodiesel production in terms of biomass productivity and oil. This revision focuses in the biotechnological potential and viability of biodiesel production from microalgae. Brazil is located in a tropical region with high light rates and adequate average temperatures for the growth of microalgae. The wide availability of bodies of water and land will allow the country to produce renewable energy from microalgae.
The T-cell anergy induced by Leishmania amazonensis antigens is related with defective antigen presentation and apoptosis

Abstract: leishmania amazonensis is the main agent of diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis, a disease associated with anergic immune responses. in this study we show that the crude antigen of leishmania amazonensis (laag) but not l. braziliensis promastigotes (lbag) contains substances that suppress mitogenic and spontaneous proliferative responses of t cells. the suppressive substances in laag are thermoresistant (100oc/1h) and partially dependent on protease activity. t cell anergy was not due to a decreased production of growth factors as it was not reverted by addition of exogenous il-2, il-4, ifn-g or il-12. laag did not inhibit anti-cd3-induced t cell activation, suggesting that anergy was due to a defect in antigen presentation. it was also not due to cell necrosis, but was accompanied by expressive dna fragmentation in lymph node cells, indicative of apoptosis. although pre-incubation of macrophages with laag prevented their capacity to present antigens, this effect was not due to apoptosis of the former. these results suggest that the t cell anergy found in diffuse leishmaniasis may be the result of parasite antigen-driven apoptosis of those cells following defective antigen presentation.

Abstract: We describe the reproductive pattern and the diet of Liophis poecilogyrus poecilogyrus based on examination of museum specimens.The snake has an aseasonal reproductive pattern, suggesting multiple clutches during a year. Females are larger than males when sexual maturity is reached. Clutch size ranges from six to 15 eggs. The diet of Liophis poecilogyrus poecilogyrus is composed of anurans, and there are no a foraging decrease during the clutching season.

Abstract: multiple myeloma (mm) is characterized by plasmocyte expansion in the bone marrow and the production of monoclonal immunoglobulin, causing bone destruction, renal failure, hematopoietic suppression and infections. identification of clinical and laboratory factors in the diagnosis are important to predict survival. the dürie/salmon staging system, used for the disease, is based on the correlation of clinical and laboratory parameters on tumoral mass. studies of the combination of β2 microglobulin and albumin resulted in a simple staging system, known as the international staging system (iss), which is currently being used. the objectives of this work were to analyze clinical and laboratory characteristics in the diagnosis of mm patients and a study of survival. a non-competitive cohort study was performed of 101 mm patients attended in the hematology service/hospital das clínicas-ufmg who were diagnosed in the period of april 1994 to october 2006.a descriptive analysis of the characteristics at diagnosis and a study of survival were made. the descriptive analysis was achieved using the kaplan-meier technique and the log-rank test utilized for a comparison of survival curves. the cox regression test was used for multivariate analysis. the average age of the patients was 63 years, 47.5% were men and 52.5% women, with 50.6% being white, 33.3% black and 16.1% mulattos. the most common clinical manifestations were: bone pain (83.2%) and weakness (70.3%). radiographies of the skeleton showed alterations in 83.8% of the cases. in respect to the dürie/salmon staging system, 63 (62.4%) patients were in stage iii, 32 (31.7%) in stage ii and 6 (5.9%) in stage i. using the iss classification, 22 (30.1%) patients were in stage iii, 31 (42.5%) in stage ii and 20 (27.4%) in stage i. overall survival was 66.52 months with a follow-up of 20 months. in the univariate analysis, creatinine (p=0.006), hemoglobin (p=0.001), the dürie/salmon staging system (p=0.009) and iss (p=0.014) were

Abstract: An electrochemical investigation of the corrosion on AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel and AISI 1010 carbon steel in sodium chloride solution (3.0 wt.%) was performed in the absence and presence of imidazole and benzimidazole corrosion inhibitors. The results showed that at any inhibitor concentration (25 ppm to 1000 ppm), there was an increase in the polarisation resistance of both steels. The highest efficiency of corrosion inhibition was obtained using imidazole at a concentration of 50 ppm for both steels, with values of 96% for the AISI 316 stainless steel and 73% for the AISI 1010 carbon steel.

Abstract: this paper aims to challenge the widespread view that economists' usage of as if formulations implies an instrumentalist (i.e. anti-realist) methodological perspective. based on an account of the role played by as if propositions in scientific theorizing, it argues that they are also compatible with a realist posture. to undertake the foregoing task, it scrutinizes what as if formulations amount to and goes on to identify some realist and instrumentalist uses of them in the actual practice of economics and evolutionary biology. more fundamentally, the present work puts forth the idea that as if might receive a realist interpretation if it consists of a simplified counterpart of an explanation that explicitly describes evolutionary processes that bring about patterns of behavior in the real economic world.
Biotechnological Reuse of Fruit Residues as a Rational Strategy for Agro-industrial Resources

Abstract: brazil, one of the largest agricultural producers in the world, has managed in recent years to significantly improve its production. however, in response to this advance in the agro-industrial sector, the generation of agro-industrial residues or sub-products has also increased, and its improper disposal may have a strong environmental impact, in addition to causing losses of raw materials and energy. in this context, the use of these residues as substrates for the production of high value-added compounds using semi-solid fermentation has been studied. thus, the aim of this study was the physical-chemical characterization of pineapple and guava residues and their potential reuse in semi-solid cultivation. the results show that both residues are sources of bio-usable nutrients after a number of operational parameters of the bioprocess of choice are adjusted.
Fantasies about pregnancy and motherhood reported by fertile adult women under hemodialysis in the Brazilian Southeast: a clinical-qualitative study

Abstract: this article discusses hemodialysis experiences in terms of meanings women attribute to several associated phenomena. renal insufficiency may present a progressive reduction in renal function, in which the kidneys are affected and become unable to remove metabolic material from the blood. living with hemodialysis is associated to important psychosocial adaptation mechanisms. this clinical-qualitative study was performed in two general hospitals' nephrology service. the method included purposive sample of nine women in hemodialysis and a semi-directed interview with open-ended questions was applied. after categorizing interviewees' discourse, psychodynamic approaches were used for interpretation. it was concluded that the subjects experienced different degrees of desire to get pregnant and become mothers, now challenged by a limiting illness. considering the adoption matter, besides symbolizing a generosity act, it would represent a solution to a deep individual demand. fantasize about adoption, even if it does not become reality, may enhance these women's self-esteem.

Abstract: advances in neuroscience and psycholinguistic studies have contributed to a better understanding of relevant processes envolved in an efficient reading. nevertheless, clinic professionals not always have access to this information in a systematic way. reading development, assessment and intervention have been widely influenced by scientific evidence, bringing together a necessary link between theory and speech-language pathology practice. therefore, the purpose of the present study was to gather relevant information towards the understanding of reading processing, especially regarding the development of reading fluency, through a critical literary review in this area.
