Abstract: observations on the epizootiology of "cara inchada" in cattle (ci) indicated that animals affected by the disease recover spontaneously when they are transferred from the ci-prone area to ci-free pastures. in the presente study 13 young bovines with actively progressing periodontal ci-lesions were transferred to a ci-free area, in order to investigate the clinical course of the disease and the composition of the microflora in the periodontal lesions in two distinct situations: (1) in the actively progressing lesions, and (2) in the healed periodontal pouches of clinically recovered animals. the semi-quantitative and qualitative bacteriological study was undertaken in regard to the percentage of black-pigmented bacteroides in cultures. in the actively progressing lesions of the 13 ci-diseased bovines the percentage of these bacteria was 71.3% in average. the evaluation of the composition of the microflora in the healed periodontal pouches of the clinically recovered bovines showed that bacteria of the black-pigmented bacteroides group existed only at an average of 1.7%. the results of this investigation give further support for the infectious nature of the ci-periodontitis and the primary involvement of these bacteria.

Abstract: diabetic foot is one of the most important complications of diabetes mellitus (dm) and it is an ordinary cause of hospitalization. the costs of these hospitalizations and the social charge are serious health problems. to evaluate diabetic hospitalized patients with foot lesions, we studied 23 patients (14m, 9f; 39-80 years old), from april to november 1999. all had type 2 dm and 48% showed glucose levels <200mg/dl when admitted into the hospital. foot lesions were categorized as follow (according to wagner): grade 1: 26%; grade 2: 17%; grade 3: 13%; grade 4: 35%; grade 5: 9%. sixty-five percent of the patients evolved to amputations (30% at thigh level). median time of the hospitalization was 14 days. median cost was r$1,004 and in 24% of the hospitalizations it was higher than r$2,000. if we aggregate the mean expenditure with prosthesis (r$1,900), the charges are around r$3,000. nine patients were at economically active age. patients with foot lesions are responsible for long time hospitalizations with high costs, which is inadequate to the public health care system in our country. consequently, prevention is absolutely significant to improve the prognosis of this pathology.

Abstract: in this paper we propose a mono-machine lot-scheduling model for a small-scale soft drink plant. the lot sizing decisions and constraints are the usual and the scheduling constraints are based on the asymmetric traveling salesman problem. to validate the model, a computational experiment was conducted using instances generated with random data and with real data taken from the literature. the instances were solved by the branch-and-cut method included in the cplex 10.0 package. the results show that the proposed model captures the main features of the production planning of a mono-machine small-scale soft drink plant. moreover, under certain circumstances, provides a better production planning than atsp na modelagem do problema de produ??o de bebidas 207 a model from the literature.

Abstract: the incidence of adverse reactions to dental products is difficult to estimate. dentists use many potential allergens and irritants in the course of their work. these materials include antiseptics, local anaesthetics, ultraviolet radiation, latex gloves, rubber dams, mouthwashes and other dental hygiene materials. besides, the materials used during the restorative procedures as metals, impression materials, cements, acrylics, and adhesives can also produce undesirable effects in the tissues of patients. the presentation of oral complaints can include stomatitis, lichenoid reactions, burning in the mouth, cheilitis and lip swelling, facial swelling, general symptoms and anaphylaxis.
Some considerations about Sport Ethics
C.M. Moreira,G.D. Pestana
Motricidade , 2008,
Abstract: In a society in which the values are in constant alterations in the behaviour of each individual, identification of the same values in the young athletes is of vital importance in order that better the process is understood by which you link they take determined decisions, in athletic situations. The questions associated to the ethics in the sport, and more specifically than concern the athletic spirit and the tolerance, assume today an added importance. In fact, we cannot deny the importance, in several extents, of the practice and of the athletic show, it is necessary to recognize them to me also what they reveal themselves how special fields, in which the ends - to win - justify any ways - violence, the corruption, the fraud, to wanting to win to all and any cost, the doping, the disloyalty, the absence of athletic spirit, etc. The Sports Ethics appears like a moral structure that defines some limits for the behaviour of the sportsmen, of form to preserve an athletic civilized system. It is possible to compete respecting the adversary, recognizing his value and competence, seeing it like an essential opponent, without whom there is not competition. Several investigators defend that the participation, of the children and adolescents in physical activities contributes to a global and harmonious development of the same, because it will have to give attention to the importance of the athletic spirit like component of the process of development of the child and adolescents. With this work some reflections were intended to present on the acquisition of values and beginnings in the athletic context.

The incidence of adverse reactions to dental products is difficult to estimate. Dentists use many potential allergens and irritants in the course of their work. These materials include antiseptics, local anaesthetics, ultraviolet radiation, latex gloves, rubber dams, mouthwashes and other dental hygiene materials. Impact of Large Poultry Operations on Groundwater : Stable 15N Isotopes of Nitrate Assessment

International Journal of Poultry Science , 2006,
Abstract: The rapid growth of livestock and poultry operations over the past 25 years has led to concern regarding environmental impacts of land applied animal wastes in many parts of the world. This study investigated the impact of dense poultry populations on ground and surface water quality in central North Carolina using the stable 15N isotopes of nitrate. On a field scale, the 15N of groundwater nitrate was not related to the type of poultry waste applied to the fields, but was controlled by the types of soils found in the litter application fields. Hydric soils had enriched groundwater nitrate 15N compositions and reduced nitrate concentrations, most likely associated with denitrification. Partially hydric and non-hydric soils did not show elevated groundwater 15N nitrate compositions. The 15N composition of groundwater nitrate in litter application fields with non-hydric soils indicates that the source of groundwater nitrate is a combination of poultry litter and fertilizer. On a watershed scale, the 15N composition of surface water nitrate was not related to the distribution of poultry operations, but was related to the distribution of hydric soils within the basin. Nitrate concentrations in stream waters remained low through out the basin studied, and the 15N composition of stream nitrate decreased downstream suggesting minimal impact on surface water quality from the surrounding poultry operations. The practice of placing poultry houses on poor quality swampy land also places them in areas dominated by hydric soils. Denitrification proceeds quickly in areas with hydric soils, which minimizes offsite nitrate transport and mitigates surface water quality impacts. This data suggests that surface water quality impacts from animal agriculture can be predicted from the spatial analysis of hydric soils within a watershed.
Improving the Design of Parallel Applications using Statistical Methods
C.M. Amarandei,D. Lepadatu,S. Caraiman
Journal of Applied Sciences , 2011,
Abstract: The aim of this study is to analyze data produced by a parallel application using statistical investigation methods like design of experiments to determine faults in the design or implementation of the application. Using this technique we develop a model to verify the design of a parallel application by determining the factors influencing its performance and describe the behavior of the application based on these factors. Experimental studies were performed on a parallel rendering application based on a sort-last domain decomposition technique. The following characteristics of the parallel application were analyzed: processing time, communication time and size of the data exchanged between processes. The performed analysis revealed the limitations of the application design in various runtime conditions offering strong clues on how certain stages of the application should be redesigned.
Kinetics of De-coking of Spent Reforming Catalyst
R. Ahmed,C.M. Sinnathambi,D. Subbarao
Journal of Applied Sciences , 2011,
Abstract: Kinetics of decoking of spent reforming catalyst has been studied using a Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA) in presence of N2 and air. It is found that the major portion of the coke species was hard coke which has activation energy equal to 86.3 kJ mol-1. Slow heating rate and appropriate temperature are monitored to optimize the de-Coking process. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis has been applied to study the structure of coke deposited on supported metal catalyst (soft coke).
