Abstract: the current study aimed to know to what extent values explain achievement goals and whether the latter predict good academic performance. participants were 307 high school students from jo?o pessoa (pb), most of them women (61.2%) and from public schools (68%), with a mean age of 17.6 years old. they answered the achievement goals questionnaire, the basic values survey, academic performance indicators and demographic questions. based on linear regressions, an explanatory model was proposed in which value priorities predicted the goal achievements and these, in turn, predicted the academic performance. results suggested the model presented satisfactory goodness of fit indices. however, further research was suggested to test this model in different samples, as well as taking into account other variables that could contribute to a better understanding of academic performance and its determinants.

Abstract: objective: this study aimed at knowing evidences of factor and predictive validity of a measure of attitudes toward drugs use (atdus). methods: participants were 276 volunteer undergraduate students of several courses. they were of a public (94.2%) and other private (5.8%) university from jo?o pessoa city (paraíba), with mean age of 21 years old (sd = 3.40; 93.5% were youths, with age ranging from 17 to 25). most of them were single (91%) and female (65.6%). moreover a set of demographic characteristics, they filled the atdus. it is composed by four item/adjective bipolars (positive-negative, like-dislike, good-nasty, and desirable-undesirable) rating in a semantic differential type scale of 9-points, ranging from - 4 to +4. results: only one component was observed according to the principal component analysis, with factor loadings above of |.40|. it showed an eigenvalue of 3.17, accounting for 79.3% of the total variance, with cronbach?s alpha of .91. logistic regression analysis suggested that scores on atdus significantly explained the condition of to be a drug user, b = .17, wald (1) = 8.45, p = .004. conclusion:these findings support the evidences of factor and predictive validity of the atdus, which can be used to know the potential engagment of youths with drugs. however, new researches that consider large and diverse samples are also suggested.

Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 2010,
Abstract: This study had three main aims: (a) to know to what extend the human values are correlated with desirable attributes of an ideal partner; (b) to identify what attributes could be considered most important for an ideal partner; and (c) to assess if the importance assigned to such desirable attributes vary according to participants' gender. Four hundred twenty one people of general population from Jo o Pessoa-PB took part in the study with mean age of 25.9 years old. Most of them were female (56.8%), single (70.5%), and with undergraduate degree (65.4%). They answered the Attributes of Ideal Partner Scale, the Basic Value Survey and demographic questions. Results indicated that a consistent set of value subfunctions were correlated with the desirable attributes of an ideal partner (e.g. the subfunctions excitement and normative were correlated with athletic and traditional dimensions, respectively). On the other hand, it was observed the role of participants' gender in differentiating the importance assigned to desirable attributes; the men appreciated more the athletic attribute, and the women did with respect to the sociable attribute. These findings were discussed based on previous research about the importance that men and women give to desirable attributes of ideal partners.

Abstract: the general health questionnaire (ghq-12) detects non severe psychiatric illnesses. although commonly treated as a general index, the definition of its factorial structure is cause for debate. this study aimed to test this structure comparing three models: two frequently cited in the literature (one- and t bi- factorial) and a third, also one-factor, which controls response bias due to the negative wording of items. a total of 1,180 people participated (300 undergraduates, 311 military policemen, 274 elementary school teachers and 295 members of the general population) answering the ghq-12 and demographic questions. confirmatory factor analyses showed that the one-factor structure, controlling by the wording effect, gathered the best fit indexes, except among the military. this structure showed greater than0.80 reliability in all groups. it was concluded that the one-factor model of the ghq-12 is more appropriate, however, future studies are required with people with different occupations and levels of mental health.

Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-37722003000300006
Abstract: this study aimed to know the ghq-12's construct validity in a general, non clinical population. 306 volunteers from different districts in joao pessoa, with a mean age of 34 years (sd = 13.8; ranging from 18 to 84), equally distributed with regards to gender (152 men; 154 woman), predominantly high school students (42.5%) participated in the study. they answered a questionnaire in which three measures were incorporated: satisfaction with life scale, positive and negative -affects scale, and general health questionnaire (ghq-12). results indicated that this measure can be considered as bifactorial, with anxiety (a = .66) and depression (a = .81) as the two factors. as expected, both factors correlated with the satisfaction with life scale and the positive and negative affects scale, indicating the construct validity of the ghq-12. these results are discussed and compared with results of previous studies suggesting a multidimensional structure for understanding mental health in the general population.

Abstract: people's perception of an aggressive driver and the causes attributed to his/her behavior are provided. participants, 389 undergraduate students, most of them women (53.8%), interpreted aggression scenes in road traffic and revealed their opinion on the aggressive driver (civility and rudeness) and on the driver's motivations (internal and external motivation) to behave with such aggressiveness. participants filled the buss-perry aggression questionnaire and demographic questions. results indicated that the aggressive driver was perceived as demonstrating more rudeness than civility. in the participants' perception, however, the driver's aggressive behavior did not differ from the type of motivation. participants with high scores in verbal aggression and physical aggression tended to minimize the negative connotation of the driver's aggressive behavior. finally, the drive's aggressive behavior was judged as more internally determined when male and young. findings are consistent with the literature.

Abstract: this paper presents empirical evidence of the psychometric adequacy of the subjective vitality scale (svs), based on three studies. in study 1, 200 undergraduate students responded the svs. the svs showed a unidimensional factor structure (α = .73). in study 2, another 200 undergraduate students answered the same instrument. a confirmatory factor analysis (cfa) confirmed the factor structure of study 1, although item 2 was inadequate. another cfa was realized without this item. results were better than those considering all items (α = .75). study 3 replicated these results with 200 elementary school teachers, and investigated the convergent validity of the svs with satisfaction with life. it can be concluded that the svs showed sufficient psychometric adequacy to support its use.
