Abstract: aortic endovascular exclusion technique called 'chimney' consists of placing stents through abdominal aortic visceral branches and a prosthesis that excludes the thoraco-abdominal aneurysm. stents and an aortic endoprosthesis are placed in the renal arteries. this method is primarily used when open surgery is too risky. the mechanism that provides aneurysm sac increase without the visible presence of endoleaks has not been fully elucidated. the expansion of the aneurysm sac, due to endotension, is difficult to diagnose, even with the use of advanced imaging tests. its diagnosis is made by exclusion. we present a case of a late complication in a high-risk patient after a 'chimney' endovascular procedure. following the surgery, the patient presented a ruptured aneurysm sac without a visible endoleak. a second intervention was not feasible due to the high risk of occluding all of the branches, and complicated by previous 'chimney'. endotension is a possible cause of aneurysm rupture and death.

Abstract: aortobronchial fistula is an abnormal passage between the aorta and the bronchus, and even when recognized and treated promptly, it carries a high risk of fatality. it can develop after aortic operations, and it is usually the result of a pseudoaneurysm. massive or intermittent hemoptysis is the main symptom. conventional treatment of aortobronchial fistula is open surgery of the thoracic aorta with tracheobronchial reconstruction. recently, endovascular repair has been proposed as an alternative. the authors report a case of successful endovascular treatment of thoracic aortic pseudoaneurysm with aortobronchial fistula, 22 years after surgical correction of the aortic coarctation.

Abstract: it is an experience based report which aims to describe the cartography application on data collection for a doctorate thesis in which the object of this study deals with strategies of the nursing team in front of hospitalized children with infectious diseases. the text discusses the geography-cartography technique and its usage / application for nursing studies and researches. this technique allows the construction of knowledge, characterizing the systems of actions that give movement and map the space. it favors a reading beyond the practices boarders, the realities and also an understanding of specialties, revealing itself as a process with meaning for a world social understanding. the development of nursing research using the cartography is still unusual. however, we believe that the cartography can strongly cooperate with the construction of a knowledge, characterizing the systems of actions that give movement and map the space.

Abstract: the objectives of this study were to describe the care provided by the nursing team to children with communicable diseases; analyze the (im)possibilities of the nursing team towards these children; and discuss about the team strategies in face of the universe of these children. this qualitative study was performed at a university hospital in rio de janeiro, with 19 subjects. we observed how the nursing team takes care of the hospitalized children in a non-pediatric sector specialized in infectious diseases, and although they do not have any academic background in pediatrics, they commit to the care of the children by establishing different strategies. the nursing team interacts with the child during the procedures, breaks with or changes rules, observes the child, values the affective dimension of care, and, among other attitudes, uses games as a form of approximation. in conclusion, the care provided by the nursing team to children with cd is a (im)possible challenge, because the team uses strategies to deal with and solve the tensions of this reality.

Abstract: the best twenty five clones, obtained in a sugar cane breeding program of "instituto agron?mico de campinas" started in 1969, were evaluated in a series of three experiments carried out at sugar cane regions of sao paulo state, brazil. in 1977 started the field trials using as controls the following commercial varieties: iac51205, iac52-150, iac58-480, na56-79, and cb41-76. the experimental design used was a randomized complete block with four replications. three harvests were made consecutivelly in plant cane (18 months), first ratoon (12 months after), and second ratoon (12 months after). means of the three harvest were analyzed statistically and tukey's test procedure was used to test differences among treatment means. the cane yield results showed that clones 69-362 and 69-326 were not statistically different from the best control iac51-205, and clones 69-426, 69-425, 69-274, 69-84, 69-87 and 69-242 showed cane yield results equal to the second best control na56-79. clones 69-309, 69-242, 69-232 and 69-362 had an outstanding performance in sugar content; on the other hand, clones 69-238, 69-274, 69-218, 69-254, 69-190. 69-420 and 69-277 had sugar content similar to that of best control na56-79. considering sugar yield, clones 69-362, 69-242, and 69-274 were not statistically different from the two best controls iac51-205 and na56-79, besides the clone 69-426 that showed to be equal to na56-79, in this, characteristic. according to the results new varieties are presented: iac69-242, iac69-274, iac69-309, iac69-362, iac69-425 and iac69-426.

Abstract: this paper aims to present and analyze the hygiene education project of belisario penna (1868-1939). this physician took part in the public health movement that sought, through reforms in public health policy and education, to change the conditions that made brazil a country of the poor, sick and illiterate. we describe the main ideas expressed by penna in the period between 1900 and 1930. for this purpose, we use his archive as a privileged source of this physician, one of the leading intellectuals of the time.
O Carnaval, a peste e a 'espanhola'
Santos, Ricardo Augusto dos;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702006000100008
Abstract: the article presents photographic and painted images related to epidemics of the plague and spanish flu. comparative analyses of this type of historical phenomena reveal similarities between diverse social formations. despite differences in time and space, epidemics display certain invariable symbolic collective expressions. for example, disease and divine punishment have been linked during a number of plague, flu, or cholera epidemics. similarly, individuals whose behavior is 'suspicious' have been accused of spreading illness - for instance, the poor, jews, irish, or blacks.
