Case Reports in Clinical Medicine (CRCM) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/crcm.2013.26101
Abstract: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) secondary to syphilis is an atypical form of neurosyphilis with an unusual clinical presentation and uncommon neuroimaging findings. A case of Syndrome de Hakim-Adams occurring in a 79-year-old male was admitted for investigation of a dementia syndrome. The patient presented with clinical features and neuroimaging compatible with NPH. Syphilis serology was reactive and compatible with active disease. The patient was treated with crystalline penicillin (4 million units every 4 hours for 21 days) and was assessed again after three months, when his cognition and gait had improved and the urinary incontinence had resolved. According to this information, we describe a case of syphilis mimicking normal pressure hydrocephalus, making clear the importance of the investigation of sexually transmitted diseases in the differential diagnosis of dementia, even in patients without established risk supposedly.
Efeito de exsudatos radiculares em endósporos de Pasteuria penetrans e em juvenis do segundo estádio de Meloidogyne incognita
Rocha, Fernando da Silva;Campos, Vicente P.;Souza, Ricardo Magela de;
Fitopatologia Brasileira , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-41582004000600008
Abstract: in one assay, second stage juveniles (j2) of meloidogyne incognita were incubated in root exudates of soybean (glycine max), tomato (lycopersicon esculentum), coffee (coffea arabica), bean (phaseolus vulgaris), mustard (brassica rapa), crotalaria juncea and c. spectabilis and in water for 12 h, followed by endospores adhesion by centrifugation or by air bubbling. in another assay, endospores of pasterius penetrans were incubated for four days at 26 oc in the exudates and submitted to adhesion on j2 of m. incognita by constant air bubbling for 24 h in tubes containing water. the j2 with endospore adhesion by air bubbling were inoculated in tomato seedlings. the incubation of j2 for 12 h in the root exudates reduced the number of p. penetrans endospore per j2, regardless of the adhesion test used, and resulted in fewer parasitized females when compared with the control, as well as a lower number of galls, except in the j2 incubated in exudate of tomato. the reproduction of incubated j2 in the root exudates was not affected when compared to the control. the endospore incubation in the exudates of the tested plants reduced the adhesion and the infectivity of these endospores to j2 in relation to the control. after 28 days from inoculation, reduction was observed in the number of parasitized females resulting from infection of those j2 with endospore incubated in exudates when compared with those incubated in water. the parasitism of j2 with endospore treated with exudates and the reproduction of infected j2 females were similar to those incubated in water.

Influence of alcohol consumption on alveolar bone level associated with ligature-induced periodontitis in rats
Souza, Daniela Martins de;Ricardo, Lucilene Hernandes;Kantoski, Karla Zanini;Rocha, Rosilene Fernandes da;
Brazilian Oral Research , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-83242009000300017
Abstract: alcohol consumption is a risk indicator for periodontal disease. the purpose of this study was to morphometrically evaluate the influence of alcohol consumption on alveolar bone level associated with ligature-induced periodontitis in rats. thirty-six female rats (wistar, 120 days-old) were randomly divided into three groups that received a daily administration of a water diet (control, n = 12), a 10% alcohol diet (10% ethanol, n = 12) or a 20% alcohol diet (20% ethanol, n = 12). four weeks after the onset of the experiment, cotton ligatures were placed around the cervix of the upper right second molar in six rats. the other 6 rats in each group remained unligated. the rats were sacrificed four weeks after ligature placement. the maxillary bones were removed and alveolar bone loss was analyzed by measuring the distance between the cementoenamel junction and the alveolar bone crest at 2 buccal and 2 palatal sites on the upper right second molar. analyses between the ligated and unligated groups showed that the presence of ligature induced alveolar bone loss (p < 0.05). unligated groups showed no significant differences between each other (p > 0.05). in the ligated groups, rats receiving 20% ethanol showed significantly greater bone loss compared to control rats or rats receiving 10% ethanol. these results demonstrate that alcohol consumption may increase alveolar bone loss in female rats in a dose-dependent manner.
Efeito do armazenamento na energia corporal de juvenis do segundo estádio de Meloidogyne incognita infestados por Pasteuria penetrans

Summa Phytopathologica , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-54052009000100002
Abstract: this work aimed to study the effect of storage period on lipid content of second stage juveniles (j2) of m. incognita with endospores of p. penetrans on infectivity and reproduction in tomato. suspensions of m. incognita containing or not endospores of p. penetrans adhered to cuticle were stored by 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 days at 28oc. after each storage period, the concentration of neutral lipids in the body of j2 was determined by image analysis of j2 stained with "oil red o". after that, 1.000 j2 were inoculated in tomato seedlings. after 28 days, the number of infected females, number of endospores per females, number of galls, number of egg masses and number of eggs per gram of root were evaluated. the lipid content of j2 reduced with the increase of storage period. however, greater lost occurred on j2 without endospores of p. penetrans. the ratio between j2 lipid losses with and without p. penetrans was small and decreased with storage period. however, the ratio between j2 with and without p. penetrans was greatest between 3 and 6 days of storage in relation to parameters reproduction and number of galls, indicating consumption of alternative energy sources others than neutral lipids by infected j2. but the storage period always reduced the reproduction and number of galls formed in tomatoes by j2 with and without p. penetrans. the loss of those energy sources indicate that many j2 dye before adult stage, because the number of parasitized females reduced with storage, besides of smaller endospores production per female. the j2 infested by p. penetrans needs to find the root quickly and should not stay in the soil for more than 6 days before parasitizing the plant.

Abstract: This paper discusses the importance of a business plan to the world of manegement, especially for a credit union in the state of Minas seeking a merger to strengthen its offering comfort, safety and improvements in service to its members. It is known that the business plan is a tool to identify and limit your mistakes onpaper rather than making them in the market. Thus, in designing this business plan were raised and researched the project, ie the credit union making an executive summary, which is the summary of thepoints of the project and demonstrated the profile of the leaders in a brief CV, and then the presentation the company on topics such as development of business activity, legal form, capital, main products, customers and their expectations, competitors, strategic promotional marketing structure. Thus, this study demonstrated that the proposed development is of great importance and value to this company, because with the numbers one can conclude that the results after the merger, even the cooperative having no greater volume of services, already generates a considerable increase in their indicators of Active Index, liquidity and profitability. Finally, the authors of this paper, sought to develop a business plan to produce concise and useful information for business development focus.

Fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) is defined by sudden onset of encephalopathy, coagulopathy and jaundice in an otherwise normal individual. Fulminant hepatic failure results in progressive multi-organ failure with a dramatic impact in the brain. Severe cerebral edema is a frequent finding that ultimately lead to intracranial hypertension and death. The management of patients with FHF is aimed mainly in prevent or reversing increased intracranial pressure associated with support treatment for other failing organs. The definitive treatment for patients with FHF is liver transplantation. This article aims to present a practical approach to anesthesia care and intraoperative management of patients with FHF.

Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi : Ciências Naturais , 2009,
Abstract: Rubiaceae is represented in the Ambiental Preservation Area (APA) of Algodoal/Maiandeua by 17 species, distributed over 15 genera. The tribes with most species were Gardenieae, with four species and Spermacoceae, with three. Guettarda and Psychotria contain two species each, and the other genera one. Three species of Rubiaceae from the restinga were sinonimized, Alibertia myrciifolia Spruce ex K. Schum. (= Cordiera myrciifolia (Spruce ex K. Schum.) C. Persson & Delprete), Psychotria barbiflora DC. (= P. hoffmannseggiana (Willd. ex Roem. & Schult.) Müll. Arg.) e Tocoyena sprucei Standl. (= T. brasiliensis Mart.). The species of Rubiaceae are more concentrated in the Myrtaceae forest, diminishing, in number of species, in direction to the beach. Guettarda spruceana Müll. Arg., Oldenlandia tenuis K. Schum., Posoqueria latifolia (Rudge) Roem. & Schult. and Retiniphyllum schomburgkii (Benth.) Müll. Arg. are new records for the APA of Algodoal/Maiandeua.
