Revista Brasileira de Cardiologia Invasiva , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S2179-83972007000300006
Abstract: background: indications for the implantation of sirolimusand paclitaxel-eluting stents are expanding and include complex lesions and subsets of patients with clinical and demographic characteristics very different from those of early pivotal randomized trials. the desire registry was planned to monitor the safety of both cypher? and taxus? stent available in brazil since 2002. methods and results: from may 2002 through march 2007, 2043 patients treated with one or more than one stent (either cypher? or taxus?) at hospital do cora??o da associa??o do sanatório sírio were included in this registry. mean age was 63.8 (11.3) years; 76.6% were male and 28.4% had diabetes. a total of 2,415 lesions were treated and 2,983 stents were implanted: 2,608 cypher? and 375 taxus?. acute and subacute (<30 days); late thrombosis (31 days - 360 days) and very late thrombosis (>360 days) occurred in 0.34%, 0.73% and 0.34% of the patients, adding up to a 1.42% overall rate. likewise, the major adverse cardiac event rate was low and added up to 8.6% (154 patients), including: 45 (2.51%) cardiac deaths; 50 (2.8%) myocardial infarctions and 59 (3.3%) of additional revascularizations. conclusions: this long-term analysis of the desire registry shows the high efficacy and safety profiles of drug-eluting stents, with a low thrombosis rate, which is similar to those of randomized trials.

Contribution of the Incorporation of Poultry Litter and Limestone for the Fertility of Sandy Soil in the Brazilian Amazon  [PDF]
Juliana Guimar?es Gerola, Juan Ricardo Rocha, Stella Cristiani Gon?alves Matoso, Leandro Dias da Silva
Natural Resources (NR) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/nr.2014.515082
Abstract: Sandy soils have limitations for growing plants. In general, they have low fertility, high toxic aluminum content and low organic matter. The organic matter is responsible for most of the cation exchange capacity of these soils. Added to this, the low clay content and the structure of these soils with large volumes of macropores, determine their low water retention. An alternative is the incorporation of organic waste combined with the practice of liming. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of the incorporation of poultry litter and limestone in the fertility of sandy soils in the Brazilian Amazon. The experiment was conducted in Colorado do Oeste, RO, on a Quartzipsamment in a completely randomized block design in a 4 × 4 × 2 factorial scheme, corresponding to four doses of poultry litter (0, 5, 10 and 15 mg·ha-1), its incorporation for four times (0, 75, 110 and 145 days) in the presence and absence of 2 mg·ha-1 of limestone, with six replications. The incorporation of 15 mg·ha-1 of poultry litter combined with 2 mg·ha-1 of limestone for 75 days after the merger raises several components of Quartzipsamment fertility, mainly being the availability of phosphorus.
The Current and Future Role of Drugs and Probiotics in the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease  [PDF]
Maricelma da Silva Soares de Souza, Sandra Maria Barbalho, Ricardo de Alvares Goulart, Antonely de Cássio Alves de Carvalho
Journal of Biosciences and Medicines (JBM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jbm.2015.38008
Abstract: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and other auto-inflammatory disorders are conditions caused by chronic and persistent intestinal inflammation, which is mainly represented by Ulcerative Colitis (UC) or Crohn’s Disease (CD), both of which typically arise as chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal mucosa. Doctor’s main focus for treating IBD is the decrease on inflammation processes when the disease is active and promotes the maintenance of inflammation at normal levels. However, to deal with these two parameters is not easy, because the drugs usually used are related to several side effects and they are not totally effective to reduce inflammation and to keep the remission. Authors agree that the therapy approach should include drugs, dietary intervention and use of alternative substances as probiotics. The standard treatment approach for patients with CD and UC is traditionally done with the use of anti-inflammatory agents, like corticosteroids, mesalamine, immunomodulators such as azathioprine and methotrexate, and biologic agents such as infliximab and others. Probiotics are known as viable micro-organisms (or live microorganisms or live microbial dietary supplements) that may promote beneficial physiologic or therapeutic properties when used correctly. The interest in the role of these substances in improving human health is the reason of several researches. They may be used to help the immune system, to control gastro-intestinal infections and to prevent several diseases. Prebiotics, symbiotics, and probiotics may be helpful as adjuvants in the treatment of IBD. Probiotics are normally well-tolerated and are associated with few side effects which are undoubtedly important in the treatment of any disease.
Preven??o de nefrotoxicidade por contraste com solu??o de bicarbonato: resultados preliminares e revis?o da literatura
Silva, Ricardo Gon?alves da;Silva, Nelson Gon?alves da;Lucchesi, Fabiano;Burdmann, Emmanuel A;
Jornal Brasileiro de Nefrologia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-28002010000300012
Abstract: introduction: the incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy has increased simultaneously with the increase in contrast medium use in diagnostic and interventional procedures. the incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy in the general population is low, but increases exponentially in patients with risk factors, such as diabetes and chronic kidney disease. several strategies have been used in order to prevent contrast-induced nephropathy. the most efficient strategies are saline hydration (0.9% or 0.45%), use of low-or iso-osmolality contrast medium, and sodium bicarbonate infusion. objective: the aim of this study was to review the pertinent literature and to assess the efficacy of hydration with 1.3% sodium bicarbonate compared with hydration with 0.9% saline solution in preventing contrastinduced nephropathy in high-risk patients. material and methods: a systematic search of the literature was conducted in pubmed by using the following keywords: bicarbonate, nephropathy, contrast medium, and acute kidney failure. in addition, 27 patients with diabetes and/or chronic kidney disease, diagnosed with some kind of cancer were randomized for study. results: none of the patients developed contrast-induced nephropathy characterized as a 0.5 mg/ dl-increase and/or a relative 25%-increase in baseline creatinine. conclusions: the literature review strongly suggested that sodium bicarbonate is effective in preventing contrast-induced nephropathy. regarding the randomized study, saline solution and bicarbonate solution had similar efficacy in preventing contrast-induced nephropathy. however, the small number of patients does not allow definite conclusions.
