Kontingenz, Redundanz, Transzendenz? - Zum Gerechtigkeitsbegriff Niklas Luhmanns
Moritz Renner
Ancilla Iuris , 2008,

The Energy Community of Southeast Europe: A neo-functionalist project of regional integration
Stephan Renner
European Integration Online Papers , 2009,
Abstract: This paper explains the emergence of the Energy Community of Southeast Europe with (1) the European Union’s external energy policy, (2) the specific regional approach of the EU at the Western Balkans and (3) the neo-functionalist ideas of those European Commission officials that were crucially involved in the process. The guiding ideas of the Commission officials involved were directly drawn from a 'popular version' of neo-functionalism: the idea that peace can be established with integration starting in a highly technical area and with creating the institutional capacity for a possible spill-over into other areas. Through this export of the EU’s rules and institutions in the energy sector the Energy Community represents an innovative new mode of governance in Southeast Europe.
Security of Quantum Key Distribution
Renato Renner
Physics , 2005,
Abstract: We propose various new techniques in quantum information theory, including a de Finetti style representation theorem for finite symmetric quantum states. As an application, we give a proof for the security of quantum key distribution which applies to arbitrary protocols.
Symmetry implies independence
Renato Renner
Physics , 2007, DOI: 10.1038/nphys684
Abstract: Given a quantum system consisting of many parts, we show that symmetry of the system's state, i.e., invariance under swappings of the subsystems, implies that almost all of its parts are virtually identical and independent of each other. This result generalises de Finetti's classical representation theorem for infinitely exchangeable sequences of random variables as well as its quantum-mechanical analogue. It has applications in various areas of physics as well as information theory and cryptography. For example, in experimental physics, one typically collects data by running a certain experiment many times, assuming that the individual runs are mutually independent. Our result can be used to justify this assumption.
On the variational distance of independently repeated experiments
Renato Renner
Mathematics , 2005,
Abstract: Let P and Q be two probability distributions which differ only for values with non-zero probability. We show that the variational distance between the n-fold product distributions P^n and Q^n cannot grow faster than the square root of n.
Reply to recent scepticism about the foundations of quantum cryptography
Renato Renner
Computer Science , 2012,
Abstract: In a series of recent papers, Hirota and Yuen claim to have identified a fundamental flaw in the theory underlying quantum cryptography, which would invalidate existing security proofs. In this short note, we sketch their argument and show that their conclusion is unjustified --- it originates from a confusion between necessary and sufficient criteria for secrecy.
What will I be like at eighty? How human values contribute to expected real and ideal self-images in old age in a Germanic/Austrian cultural context  [PDF]
Walter Renner, Brigitte Jenull, Irene Strasser
Advances in Aging Research (AAR) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/aar.2014.31007
Abstract:

According to Grawe’s Consistency Theory, congruence between an individual’s aims and reality is fundamental for psychological health. We examined the real and ideal self-images of N = 440 participants in a Germanic/Austrian cultural context as perceived in presence and as anticipated for an age of 80 years and examined their relationship to value orientations as a coping resource. From adjective ratings on the Semantic Differential for the real self-image at presence, two dimensions were extracted, one representing Warmth (W) and one representing Competence (C) in the sense of the Stereotype Content Model. Cluster analysis yielded one type of respondents with a cautiously optimistic, and one with a moderately pessimistic view of the present and the future. A third cluster devalued W and C in favor of Religiosity and Conservatism and had the highest degree of congruence between real and ideal self-images. Thus, hypotheses with regard to Religiosity and Conservatism as coping resources were confirmed.
