Ximenes, Renato Luis da Silveira;Szejnfeld, Jacob;Ximenes, Andréa Regina da Silveira;Zanderigo, Valdir;
Radiologia Brasileira , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-39842008000500009
Abstract: objective: the present study was aimed at evaluating by means of magnetic resonance imaging a series of fetuses with sonographic diagnosis of malformation, establishing the diagnostic benefits and limitations of fetal magnetic resonance imaging as compared with ultrasonography. materials and methods: forty women between 15-35 gestational weeks and previously diagnosed with fetal abnormality by ultrasonography were referred to undergo complementary fetal magnetic resonance imaging, particularly for evaluating abnormalities in the fetal central nervous system, thorax, abdomen, renal system, skeletal system, and tumors. the whole evaluation process included a review of the fetal ultrasonography and magnetic resonance images, postnatal follow-up, laboratory tests, imaging studies and necropsy. results: the present study has demonstrated that complementary magnetic resonance imaging did provide further information in 60% of cases, with the following benefits: improved information on the fetus as a whole, with a large field of view, higher anatomic resolution provided by fast sequences, superior soft tissue contrast resolution, besides the fact that the visualization of the fetus is not significantly affected by maternal obesity or oligohydramnios. limitations of the method include contraindication in the first gestational trimester and in cases of maternal claustrophobia, sensitivity to fetal motion, low sensitivity for detecting cardiovascular and skeletal malformations. conclusion: fetal magnetic resonance imaging plays a significant role as a complementary method for the diagnosis of fetal anomalies.
Forest spatial heterogeneity and palm richness, abundance and community composition in Terra Firme forest, Central Amazon

Brazilian Journal of Botany , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-84042005000100007
Abstract: the mechanisms that maintain tree diversity in tropical rain forests are still in debate. variations in forest structural components produce forest microenvironmental heterogeneity, which in turn may affect plant performance and have been scarcely analyzed in the amazon. palms are widespread in the neotropical rainforests and have relatively well known taxonomy, apart from being ecologically and economically important. the understanding of how palms respond to variation in the forest structural components may help to explain their abundance and richness in a given area. in this study, we describe a palm community and analyze how it is affected by forest microenvironmental heterogeneity. in a pristine "terra firme" forest at reserva ducke, manaus, we recorded all adult palm trees in twenty 100 × 10 m plots. in the same plots we recorded the variation in canopy openness, the leaflitter thickness and counted all non-palm forest trees. a total of 713 individuals in 29 palm species were found. the three most abundant species were astrocaryum sciophilum (miq.) pulle, a. gynacanthum mart. and attalea attaleoides (barb. rodr.) wess. boer. the most locally abundant species were also very frequent or occurred in a larger number of plots. there were no significant effects of litter depth, forest canopy openness and forest tree abundance on palm richness. however, in areas where leaf litter was thicker a significant lower number of palm trees occurred. in microsites where proportionally more incident light was reaching the forest understory, due to higher canopy opening, significantly more palm trees were present.
Geotechnical mapping of the urban perimeter of Chapada dos Guimar es: subsidies to the city master plan

Geologia USP : Série Científica , 2012,
Abstract: The cartographic prediction, characterization, and documentation of geological processes and hazard areas have fundamentalimportance for land-use regulation and planning, respecting the potentials and limits of the lands. Geotechnical mappingis an effective tool, which provides local authorities with such information, as demonstrated in the elaboration of thegeotechnical mapping of the urban area of Chapada dos Guimar es, in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The morphopedologicalapproach was used, and it allowed the integrated interpretation of physical components and deductions of water shed operations.It also allowed the boundary identification of areas of relative homogeneity, as far as physical processes, geotechnicalattributes, potentialities and restrictions of land use are concerned. Six geotechnical units were defined and characterized.One was favorable for using without restrictions; two others were restricted but subject to control by Civil Engineeringworks and the remaining three ones presented geological risks associated with mass movement and erosion. The latter wasconsidered non favorable for human occupation, therefore of restricted use, and specific planning conditions.

Sao Paulo Medical Journal , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-31802001000100006
Abstract: context: the literature shows an association between several ultrasound markers and chromosome abnormality. among these, measurement of nuchal translucency has been indicated as a screening method for aneuploidy. the trisomy of chromosome 21 has been most evaluated. objective: to define the best fixed cutoff point for nuchal translucency, with the assistance of the roc curve, and its accuracy in screening all fetal aneuploidy and trisomy 21 in a south american population. type of study: validation of a diagnostic test. setting: this study was carried out at the state university of campinas, campinas, brazil. participants: 230 patients examined by ultrasound at two tertiary-level private centers, at 10 to 14 weeks of gestation. diagnostic test: the participants consisted of all those patients who had undergone ultrasound imaging at 10 to 14 weeks of gestation to measure nuchal translucency and who had had the fetal or neonatal karyotype identified. main measurements: maternal age, gestational age, nuchal translucency measurement, fetal or neonatal karyotype. results: prevalence of chromosomal defects ? 10%; mean age ? 35.8 years; mean gestational age ? 12 weeks and 2 days; nuchal translucency (nt) thickness ? 2.18 mm. the best balance between sensitivity and specificity were values that were equal to or higher than 2.5 mm for overall chromosomal abnormalities as well as for the isolated trisomy 21. the sensitivity for overall chromosomal abnormalities and trisomy 21 were 69.5% and 75%, respectively, and the positive likelihood ratios were 5.5 and 5.0, respectively. conclusion: the measurement of nuchal translucency was found to be fairly accurate as an ultrasound marker for fetal abnormalities and measurements equal to or higher than 2.5 mm were the best fixed cutoff points.
Capital social, redes sociais e inova??es produtivas
Ximenes, Tereza;
Ambiente & Sociedade , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-753X2008000200012
Abstract: successful experiences in motivating local populations show the importance of organizing people and training them to develop innovative projects. it also reveals that communities in which people interact more frequently with each other and where social networks, on a whole, are well integrated, are more likely to overcome their limitations and to take advantage of their opportunities. this in return favors the development of strategies and collective tactics, increasing the power of choice and decision of the community members.

Radiologia Brasileira , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-39842009000100012
Abstract: congenital mediastinal cysts are uncommon benign lesions generally caused by an abnormal embryological development of the foregut or coelomic cavity. they are expansive lesions, frequently asymptomatic that may manifest as a result from compression of adjacent structures. bronchogenic, pericardial, enteric, thymic, esophageal duplication cysts and lymphangiomas are the main entities in this group of lesions. congenital mediastinal cysts morphology is typical and imaging methods allow a correct diagnosis in a great number of cases. surgical treatment is indicated only in cases of symptomatic lesions, considering that these lesions present no potential for malignant degeneration. the present study was aimed at commenting and illustrating the most relevant imaging findings of these lesions based on a retrospective review of ten cases collected in the records of the involved institutions.

O supremo tribunal federal e a cidadania à luz da influência comunitarista
Ximenes, Julia Maurmann;
Revista Direito GV , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1808-24322010000100007
Abstract: the 1988 constitution conferred to the supreme court an institutional design that reflects a valorization of the constitutional text and an effort to bring it near to a citizenship practice due to a participative democracy movement, in the light of the of the communitarian philosophical-political theory. however, it is possible to see elements that unloose an identity crisis on the activities done by the supreme. this identity crisis is sharpened by the institute of the amicus curiae, questioning the role as a constitutional tribunal itself.
Estudo sobre a identifica o da hierarquia temática = Study on the identification of thematic hierarchy
Gustavo Ximenes Cunha
Acta Scientiarum : Language and Culture , 2010,
This paper presents a work whose objective is to evidence that the identification and the hierarchy of the themes in a text requires the combination of different discursive phenomena: the one of thearticulation of textual constituents and the thematic progressions. For that, we made, in three stages, the study of a specific text. At first, it was verified the form as textual constituents articulate themselves. After that, we analyzed thematic progressions of the text.Finally, the analyses accomplished in the first two stages were combined. In this third stage, we identified the themes hierarchy and we verified that the degree of the text information accessibility seems to be linked to the hierarchy of its constituents. That verification allowed us to explain why certain information worked preferentially as themes.
